The mission of Capitol Squash is to empower youth of Hartford to reach their potential as athletes, students, and engaged citizens.
Dear Capitol Squash family, When Capitol Squash re-launched five years ago in 2014, our goal was to support as many Hartford students as we could in a deep and meaningful way. During the school year, our students receive at least three days of squash and academic support as well as additional weekend school visits, cultural opportunities, and matches. We also provide a five-week summer program. In the 2018-2019 academ-ic school year, our students averaged a 93% attendance rate.
Trinity College has welcomed us into their home. The college provides courts and class-rooms for our program, and Trinity students generously provide academic help and squash coaching to our youth. Nearly all of the Capi-tol Squash students grew up in the neighbor-hoods surrounding Trinity without ever having stepped on campus prior to joining Capitol Squash. Now many of them feel as comfortable at Trinity as they do at their own schools.
When we initially set out to serve as many students as possible, we knew one day we would outgrow the space at Trinity. We’re now bursting at the seams with students spanning from fourth to tenth grade. We didn’t know back in 2014 if Trinity would be the permanent home for Capitol Squash, but I’m excited to share we’ve recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding to raise funds and build a facility in partnership with Trinity. This facility will allow us to serve 100 students from Hartford in the same intensive way for years to come.
As we look ahead, we know we couldn’t have experienced such success without your support, commitment, and belief in our program’s mission. We are grateful to the entire Capitol Squash and Trinity community for helping us enrich the lives of our students each and every day.Best,
A MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
OUR MISSION
Capitol Squash strives to provide urban youthwith life-changing opportunities through the sport of squash, intensive educational support, mentoring, and community service activities.
Meg Taylor
Dear Friends of Capitol Squash,
I am both honored and excited to have been elected by my colleagues to chair the board of directors of Capitol Squash. I succeed David Kinsley, whose energy, enthusiasm, intelligence, and discipline over his term as chair have molded this small not-for-profit organization into a model for squash and education organizations across the country.
David and the board have created a successful and sustainable organization, but it is the brilliant, dynamic leadership of Meg Taylor and the caring, dedicated work of the staff that has made Capitol Squash great. It is a real pleasure to support their work and watch the amazing effects it has on the young people who bring Capitol Squash’s mission to life.
Fifty-five years ago I arrived on the Trinity campus as a freshman from a small steel mill town in Western Pennsylvania. I was introduced to squash on this campus, a sport I may have heard of but knew almost nothing about. I happily played the sport for the next forty years. More importantly, my Trinity education provided me with knowledge and critical skills that served me throughout my long career in higher education.
I am especially excited to be able to help create a permanent Capitol Squash Center here at the College. As a member of both the Capitol Squash and Trinity College boards, I think I am in an excellent position to help make this happen, so that we can ensure the success of Capitol Squash far into the future.
Thank you for your generous and inspired support.
Walter Harrison

CELEBRATING 5 YEARS OF PROGRAMMING AT TRINITY COLLEGE
In 2014, Capitol Squash partnered with Trinity College to create a space for students of Hartford to learn, play, and grow. We are grateful for our institutional partner for opening their doors to support our students.
“Our institution places a high value on the continued partnership between Trinity Athletics and Capitol Squash. We recognize the importance of cre-ating inclusive opportunities for children from Hartford to learn and play. Capitol Squash is meeting that need for so many young people in our com-munity and we relish the chance to not only continue our relationship but build upon it by creating a space that allows those students to reach their potential.”
Drew Galbraith Director of Athletics, Trinity College
“We are delighted to celebrate our five-year anniversary of teaming up with Capitol Squash to positively impact the lives of all their program participants. Through this partnership, we have been able to celebrate Trinity’s triumphant relationship with the sport of squash, and share a passion for education and competition with youth and their families from our home community of Hartford.”
Joanne Berger-Sweeney President, Trinity College
“The collaboration between Trinity College and Capitol Squash is powerful and life changing. To see our players work with the young people of Hart-ford and feel so good about themselves is reinforcing. To see the young people gain confidence and truly believe that they can do something special with their lives makes this program one of the very best things that hap-pens in the Kellner Squash Center.”

DAVID KINSLEY AWARD FOR SPORTSMANSHIP
David Kinsley has been Capitol Squash’s Board Chair since the program’s relaunch in 2014. After lead-ing the board for five years, he has passed the baton to Walter Harrison. In recogni-tion of David’s de-votion and ceaseless support of Capitol Squash, his energetic leadership, and en-thusiasm for the mis-sion of the organi-zation, we presented the first annual David Kinsley Award for Sportsmanship at our end of year celebration. We are grateful for David’s support and look forward to presenting this award for years to come.
“It’s been my great honor to serve as Board Chair for Capitol Squash during the last five years. We’ve moved from start-up to a best-in-class non-profit due to an outstanding team – our board, staff and volunteers all in-spire. Together we have created a magic pro-gram that truly changes lives and I couldn’t be more proud!”David Kinsley Chair, Capitol Squash Board of Directors, 2014-2019
