Even though our next meeting isn’t until next fall, there are two events over the summer that you should not miss. A field trip to Seneca Caverns and the annual golf outing have been scheduled for August 1 st and September 17 th . Please mark these dates and be sure to invite friends and family as well. Larry Wickstrom and John Forman have been elected to serve again as our delegates to AAPG. Thanks everyone who voted. Steve Zody and Paul Archer have agreed to serve as alternates for the same term. If anyone is interested in representing the Society at the national level, or finding out more information about what the positions entail, please contact one of our delegates or your officers. Ohio’s Seneca Caverns have been open to the public since 1933. The guided walking tour leads you through 7 different rooms as deep as 110 ft. below the surface! The caverns are owned by one of our own members, Richard Bell, who will be personally leading us on the tour of the caverns that day. Please mark your calendars and stay tuned for more details – including sign-up forms – about the trip. This tour, although geologically-oriented, is a great opportunity to bring friends and family along to see the wonders that geology has to offer! The software users group has had a decent response so far, but we need more of you to come forward in order to get this initiative off the ground. If you use the software GeoGraphix, Global Mapper, Surfer, NeuraSection, ESRI Arc products, MapSource, DeLorme, or SMT, you are not the only one. Users of these software packages have added their names to the list in order to locate other users with the same software. Please send me your contact information with the industry-related software products that you use, and you will be kept in the loop on updates and quick-fixes that you may otherwise never hear about! Bill Hlavin’s talk, A New Look at the Mayfield Gas Pool, Cuyahoga County, Ohio, on Friday, May 15 was very well-attended. Bill provided a historical background on the history of the Mayfield gas pool development. It was a great talk to end the year. We also provided an Honorary Membership to Fred Haeberle as a tribute to his commitment to the oil and gas community (50 years) as well as the Society. AAPG Membership / Ohio Geological Society Grant

If you are an AAPG member, you should have recently received your dues statement. If you are not an AAPG member, we would highly recommend you consider joining.

In 2005, OGS established the Ohio Geological Society named grant which is being administered by the AAPG Foundation. The initial $12,500 donation will provide an annual $500 grant to a deserving student studying the geology of Ohio, or secondly, a geology student enrolled at an Ohio college or university. More donations have been made since the grant was initiated, and we would like to continue to build this fund to $25,000 so that the annual grant can be increased to a more meaningful $1000.

There is a very simple way to contribute! The past few years, AAPG has included on the dues statement a voluntary AAPG Foundation contribution based on years of membership. To insure that this contribution (or more, if you wish) is earmarked toward the OGS grant, simply check “Grants-in-Aid” on the back of the dues statement and write “Ohio Geological Society Named Grant” in the space provided.

One additional item to double check on your dues statement is your affiliated society. You will find this printed on the statement. If Ohio Geological Society is not listed as your society affiliation, please consider changing this entry. Our representation to AAPG’s House of Delegates is determined by this count.

Starting in 1891, the drilling of oil-and-gas wells of the Lima-Indiana fields extended into the lake. Over 100 wells had been drilled into the lake by the time the field was abandoned after 1910.
