Some of my reading is definitely just for leisure, but other is for professional stimulation. The book I am reading for relaxation is Maeve Binchy’s, Firefly Summer. Reading Matters To keep myself open and fresh in my ministry to the parish, I am in the process of reading two books. In Radical Welcome: Embracing God, the Other and the Spirit of Transformation, by Stephanie Spellers, and through the Churchnext videos of the same title, I hope to learn ways to build on a strength at St Francis; our warm and welcoming spirit. The Vestry will be looking at the online course of “Radical Welcome”, and together we hope to discern simplifying our Vision and Mission Statements to reflect our current charism and future directions. Along with “Radical Welcome”, I am also reading Searching for Sunday: loving, leaving and finding the church, by Rachel Held Evans. Rachel Held Evans is a millennial who describes her journey out of church, back into it, and why she is choosing to stay. In this era of “spiritual but not religious”, and of sports and family commitments on Sundays, I ask God how to aract others into an experience of God on a Sunday morning that feeds the soul and sparks a desire to be a part of a parish family. How do we grow in an authentic and irresistible expression of the Jesus who wanted to feed his people through us??? Sooo…I read, wonder and pray! Peter+ and Hank are also reading these books so we are a lile book group that is sharing insights gleaned with one another. And…Sometimes summer becomes taking care of unfinished things or geing projects done! Organ Fundraising FIRST OF ALL, the organ fundraising went very well and we THANK YOU! We are on our way doing the repair and upgrades needed for the organ. In fact, our beloved organ console has left the building! Summer Blessings!

During this summer I am enjoying some extra reading! Some of my reading is definitely just for leisure, but other is for professional stimulation. The book I am reading for relaxation is Maeve Binchy’s, Firefly Summer.

Reading MattersTo keep myself open and fresh in my ministry to the parish, I am in the process of reading two books.

In Radical Welcome: Embracing God, the Other and the Spirit of Transformation, by Stephanie Spellers, and through the Churchnext videos of the same title, I hope to learn ways to build on a

strength at St Francis; our warm and welcoming spirit.

In this era of “spiritual but not religious”, and of sports and family commitments on Sundays, I ask God how to attract others into an experience of God on a Sunday morning that feeds the soul and sparks a desire to be a part of a parish family. How do we grow in an authentic and irresistible expression of the Jesus who wanted to feed his people through us??? Sooo…I read, wonder and pray! Peter+ and Hank are also reading these books so we are a little book group that is sharing insights gleaned with one another.

And…Sometimes summer becomes taking care of unfinished things or getting projects done!

Organ FundraisingFIRST OF ALL, the organ fundraising went very well and we THANK YOU! We are on our way doing the repair and upgrades needed for the organ. In fact, our beloved organ console has left the building!

There will be an empty spot in the church for several months as the whole console is engineered to become digital. All the old wiring was disassembled and thrown out the last week of June and the big organ console taken away for this next phase.

News!Parish Library…I wanted you know that a remodel of the parish library is in the works, and the remodel itself will be the first two weeks in September. Our library has has served us well, but now has a very worn look to it. How might the library room best meet the needs of the parish we have become? The Vestry and I discerned an answer: to transform the library into an up-to-date adult meeting room, while maintaining space for books. Holly Henebry, who designed the classrooms and their furnishings on the stage in the parish hall which we dedicated last September, will also be redesigning the library. The Vestry approved money using the interest from the restricted funds account, not touching any restricted funds just the use of the interest that had built up, to remodel the library space. The five white book shelves will be replaced by three that are wood finished with glass doors. These cabinets are presently waiting to be repurposed, standing at attention in the boardroom. We are purchasing two new couches and four comfortable sitting chairs. There will be a table and six chairs for small meetings and the chairs can be moved when needed to fill in around the sofas and sitting chairs. The stained rug will be replaced by Pergo type wood flooring. A wide screen flat TV will be added to one wall for the adult education classes that presently use a projector. There will be a small counter space for refreshments and fresh

paint will finish off the refurbishment. This decision was made to enhance the ministries that use that space.

LandscapeSTILL MORE NEWS…I think you have noticed some external changes in our landscaping: for instance, the removal of the tall junipers that were in the middle of the area below the logia and the planting of new shrubs and fruit trees. The fruit trees will aid our Seeds of Hope Ministry. Recently, the fountain in the lower parking lot by the stairs was emptied of dirt. We will get estimates on what it would cost to refurbish it. The fountain was filled with dirt and succulents several years ago because it needed a new motor and the cost of upkeep made us pause. When the fountain was presented to the parish there were no additional funds given for its maintenance. After the estimates for repairs come in, the Buildings and Grounds Committee and Vestry will decide how to go forward. I thank John Henebry for doing most all of this work with the help of other volunteers. And I thank Jack Ferme for the adjustments of all the sprinklers on campus to be more efficient. And thank you to our Gardening Angels for continual care of plants all over the campus.

And finally...I want to be transparent in my ministry with you. I invite you to share with me thoughts you may have about any of the above topics or any issue that is on your heart! Or share your thoughts with a Vestry member. The Vestry represents you, and I trust the working of the Spirit through them.May you find moments this summer to be refreshed, especially by the beauty of God in nature…or just by reading a book. On the warmest of days, may you let the warmth you feel be a metaphor for the love of God enfolding you. I am excited by all that we are as a parish family and pray for the guidance of the Holy Spirit. We are in this together! Summer blessings!

With love and care for each of you,Paula+

I am very excited to be joining the St. Francis community as a seminarian for my year of field education, which is part of my studies for the Master of

Divinity. I have been warmly welcomed by the staff at your beautiful campus and look forward to getting to know the rest of you.My home parish is St. Augustine by-the-Sea in Santa Monica where I have been a parishioner for 33 years, serving in just about every lay capacity at some point during that time. When I retired from teaching and directing theater in 2012, I discovered that God had plans for me that I never could have predicted. After a year of discernment at my parish, I was accepted as a postulant in the diocese and have just completed my first year of seminary at the Church Divinity School of the Pacific [CDSP] in Berkeley.

The low-residential program offers most classes on-line plus two-week stints in Berkeley in January and June. One of those classes is a year-long supervised field education placement in a parish other than your own. How lucky I feel to be at St. Francis!I have twin daughters who have somehow both ended up in Las Vegas, and two grandsons, Luke age 14 who lives for baseball, and Carter, age 11 who spends his time playing guitar and video games (when his mother allows it).In addition to school, I am an on-call chaplain at UCLA Santa Monica hospital, and I work sometimes as an actress at the UCLA medical school as a standardized patient. I am forever grateful for all that God has given me, and I welcome this new and exciting chapter in my life.

Judith [or Jude]

Welcome JudithI welcome Seminarian Judith Lyons to our St Francis Family, as she interns in Parish Field Education. She will be with us from September 2017 until June of 2018. We will give her opportunities to serve in our various ministries and look forward to her warm, dynamic presence among us! Her biography is below.

Creator Godwho breathed this world into being, who is discernible within the harmony of nature, the perfection of a butterfly's wing, the grandeur of a mountain range, the soaring eagle and humming bird, thank you for this worldwhich you have created.Thank you for summer sun, which reminds us that your creative breath is still alive and active. Thank you for the warmth of your love, sustaining this world, your garden

Sunday School News!By Paula+In June, I announced that Kate Buchen would be stepping down as the Minister of our Sunday School Program. She ended serving in this leadership role at the end of Vacation Bible School but will continue as one of the teachers. Praying for a new leader of this important program began as soon as Kate had informed me of her decision. The Spirit is not bound by our time, moved amongst us and new leadership emerged: Suzanne Gatlin will take on coordinating the Sunday School Program and Communications. Donna Paine will coordinate Family Fellowship. Kate Buchen and Blair Hinz will help in the transition. Thank you, Suzanne, for assuming the mantle of coordinator of this program. Suzanne brings experience, a warm personality and creative vision. Her background includes an M.ED. from the University of Maryland, Director of Sunday School, All Saints, Waterloo, Belgium 1989-1991, Sunday School teacher 1991-1997, Board of Directors for establishing an Episcopal Preschool, Great Falls, VA. 1997-2002, St Francis Preschool Assistant Teacher. VA. 1999-2002, Catechises of the Good Shepherd and Godly Play assistant, St Francis, PV.Donna Paine has been involved in leadership with a Faithful Families program when she and her husband Richard attended St Lawrence Martyr Parish. Kate Buchen has provided help in this transition along with Blair Hinz one of the experienced Sunday School teachers.Speaking of involvement with the children and families, I invite you to pray about becoming a volunteer with our Sunday School Program. It is a once a month opportunity on a Sunday morning to be a part of helping kids to experience the love of God in their lives and to become more aware of the gift of faith we have received, our Christian heritage. You can also volunteer in the Summer Sunday School Program which is a different program then during the program year of September through June. Pray about it and jump in!

Why Has The Church Turned Green?By Susan Marshall,At Pentecost our church vestments and linens were red, to signify the fire of the Holy Spirit; at Easter and Christmas we celebrate with white and gold – so why are we now all in green? Because it’s summer? Well, that can’t be, because we also ‘go green’ between Epiphany and the start of Lent, so what’s going on?During the Season after Epiphany, and the Season after Pentecost, our church calendar, and the lectionary (the scheme of readings which is used for a wide majority of Christian churches – both Catholic and Episcopalian), follow the theme of the spread of the Gospel, and the growth of the church. Green symbolises this growth. The seasons are also known as ‘Ordinary Time’, which comes from the Latin “ordinalis,”, meaning “showing order.” Hence, Ordinary Time is the orderly, counted time outside of the other liturgical seasons. There is nothing “ordinary” about Ordinary Time!Because this portion of Ordinary Time occurs after the celebrations of Jesus’s Passion, Resurrection, and

Ascension, the Season after Pentecost is focused on the Age of the Church - the age we live in now, the time that exists between the Age of the Apostles and the second and last coming of Christ for which we are preparing. This period of Ordinary Time is also focused on Christ’s reign as King of kings; the Feast of Christ the King caps off the season of Ordinary Time as the final Sunday before Advent begins.

Congratulations to Elishebah Tate-Pulliamfrom ElishebahGood morning,I just wanted to send a quick thank you to all of my St. Francid family. I am so happy to announce that as of May 23rd, 2017 I am an official graduate of CSULB! I recieved my BS in Biology and a Minor in Comparative World Literature. I honestly could not have made it without the love and support you all gave me. There were many times I was down and out and wanted to give up, but I remembered I had a group of loving and kind people rooting for me. So I dug in and always did my best to overcome what challenges I faced. I cannot thank you enough for what you all did for my family and I. I love you all and I hope that I will continue the legacy of support and kindness you instilled in me with your great works. Thank you again .

Sages* On The Move!Support the Work of Harbor InterfaithOn June 15th, we had a great SAGES' sponsored tour of Harbor Interfaith Services in San Pedro followed by a delicious lunch across the street at the Sandwich Saloon! The mission of Harbor Interfaith Services is to empower the homeless and working poor to achieve self-sufficiency by providing support services including shelter, transitional housing, food, job placement, advocacy, childcare, education, and life-skills training. We give thanks for the work of Harbor Interfaith! Please let Hank know if you would be interested in volunteering at Harbor Interfaith, perhaps as a group from St. Francis. If so, we can talk it through and discuss it with the Volunteer Coordinator at Harbor. In the meantime, we will continue to donate fruits and vegetables from our yards and clothes, linens, kitchen items, toy, hobby crafts, shoes, etc. from the Blue Bin. During this past month we have donated 100's of oranges, limes, and lemons and over 100 bags of clothes and such. Also, Martha Flecha-Raza, Harbor's Director of the Family Resource Center said that she would call if there is something specific she would like for St. Francis to consider doing. Stay tuned.
