RDAY JULY

What a terrific Spring 2013 Season it was as we moved into our 25th year celebration. We kicked it off with a magical might at the Albuquerque Museum on May 24 with the still-awe-inspiring Mavis Staples. What a spirit! What a voice! What a band! It all came together that night. Beautiful venue—indoors for the dinner and in the awesome amphitheater for the concert; a great turnout of more than 550 very happy folks; GREAT weather and a FULL MOON. What more can you ask for? And amazingly— thanks to all of you who pitched in, from attendees to sponsors, to the city, to art collectors and artists, to volunteers, staff and board and committee members—it was a fundraiser that actually raised some funds.... more than $15,000 (we in the non-profit arts world always joke about how much money we lose on our fundraisers). What a great way to kick off a celebration of 25 Outpost Years! So now, it’s on to the summer and our 18th annual Summer Thursday Jazz Nights; the Roost Creative Music Series; our jazz classes for kids and adults; and of course, the 8th Annual New Mexico Jazz Festival. We’re expecting great success with all of it. This year, Route 66 Summerfest, a centerpiece of the Jazz Festival, becomes a 3 day event with a Friday night concert at the Hiland Theater on July 19 by the Yellowjackets, the all day event on Saturday (3 stages, 120 musicians, car show, Cork & Tap, Food Truck Rumble, 50,000 people) and then Jazz Brunches on Sunday in Nob Hill Restaurants). There’s Catherine Russell at the Old Town Gazebo; Larry Mitchell at the Santa Fe Plaza; Trio da Paz, Arlen Asher, Lionel Loueke, Tom McDermott, a photo show by Mark Weber and a film screening by Carol Chamberland at the Outpost; and Stanley Clarke, Terence Blanchard, Lionel Loueke and Eddie Plamieri at the Lensic. The 2013-2014 season, now in its planning stages, promises the return of Gretchen Parlato, Allison Miller’s Boom Tic Boom, Rahim AlHaj, Yosvany Terry, the ACS Trio featuring Geri Allen, Terri Lyne Carrington & Esperanza Spalding, Lucy Kaplansky, Iva Bittova, Fred Hersch, Laurie Lewis, the Charles Lloyd Quartet w. Bill Frisell (Lensic), Peter Brotzmann, Regina Carter, the Bad Plus, Donny McCaslin and much more. In November, we’ll be welcoming the Clayton Brothers for the first time and we’ll use that opportunity to officially name our performance area at the Outpost, The Weil Auditorium, in honor of and in gratitude to the generosity of Bumble Bee Bob Weil and his family. That’s on October 18 so mark your calendars! ONWARD!

JAZZ IMPROVISAtIOn & LAtIn MuSIC CLASSES FOR YOuthtwo Four-Week Sessions
MOnDAY, tuESDAY & WEDnESDAY AFtERnOOnS & tuESDAY EVEnIngS
JunE 10-JuLY 31
Taught by Kanoa Kaluhiwa, Sharon Eldridge, Paul Gonzales & César Bauvallet
Jazz Improvisation & Latin Music Classes for Youth are open to all young musicians
(instrumentalists & vocalists)— elementary through high school levels— who want to have
fun learning more about improvising and playing jazz & Latin music in a small ensemble.
Classes are taught by the Outpost team comprising saxophonist, Kanoa Kaluhiwa;
drummer, Sharon Eldridge; trumpeter, Paul Gonzales; and our most recent addition to
the teaching staff, trombonist & percussionist, César Bauvallet. All classes aim to build
positive attitudes, trust, teamwork, cooperation, confidence, compassion, and a sense
of humor—skills and values which will serve participants well beyond the workshop and
throughout their entire educations and lives. Fun will be had by all!
Monday and Tuesday afternoon Jazz Improvisation classes taught by Paul Gonzales, and
Sharon Eldridge focus on the rudiments of music and improvisation including rhythmic
training, scale work, form in music, and musical improvisation. Students are invited
to express themselves freely on their respective instruments as well as on percussion
instruments. The emphasis is on musical expression as an individual in a group setting.
Each teacher has a slightly different approach and our goal is to place together, students
of similar levels as well as to form a balanced ensemble in terms of instrumentation.
Advanced Classes (Wednesday) taught by Kanoa Kaluhiwa focus more specifically on
EDUCATIONSummer 2013
the Outpost Jazz Education Program is the centerpiece of Outpost’s Educational offerings. Founded in the Spring of 1996, with seed money provided by a concert the previous year by “Arlen Asher & Friends,” the program now takes place year-round with over 30 weeks of classes, three instructors, and yearly scholarships offered to worthy students. Since its inception, approximately 2000 students have moved through the program.

PRAY FOR BRAIn
LISA LOPEZ &MAntECAsponsored by Southwest Gastroenterology Associates, PC
Pray for Brain evolved from Mustafa Stefan Dill’s (guitars, oud) and Jefferson Voorhees’
(drums) Sama Duo, which featured groove-oriented energetic improvisations with a gutsy
south Asian and Middle Eastern twist. Bassist, Christine Nelson joined the duo in 2011
and the trio expanded their range of groove, nuance and improvising conversations. As
they describe it, “think 70’s era Miles Davis, Chet Atkins and late Coltrane playing with the
White Stripes and Isaac Hayes on a Calcutta rooftop with a bird’s eye view to Morocco
with Johnny Cash and Bengali icon Rabrindranath Tagore sitting in.” The trio plans to
release their CD, None Of The Above, this summer. Manteca is a quartet that performs
all styles of Latin Jazz, including samba, salsa, bolero, cha-cha, funk, and pop genres
with musical influences ranging from the United States, Europe, Cuba, Mexico, Puerto
Rico and South America. They perform tunes by Chucho Valdez and Seis del Solar,
arrangements by Michel Camilo, and their own twists on Latin jazz standards. Manteca is
Ramseys Fernandez, percussion; Yosmel Montego, bass; Miguel Escuriola, drums; Lisa
Lopez, piano/keyboards; and featured guest, Rodolfo Gonzalez-flute. $15/$10 Members & Students

that has always been here, but it hasn’t, it resides in the future and we only glimpse
it’s full meaning in fleeting intervals, a coiled arpeggiated chord, a horn like the distant
freight train across town, a saxophonist passing through whose name you didn’t catch,

could get the musicians to stop. A veritable cross-section of Bay Area literati and low life
could be found listening in hushed silence to jazz greats and masterful unknowns. Those
on the stand regulated the quality, so no one would dare play if their chops weren’t up
to it. Videomaker Carol Chamberland met Jimbo Edwards during his 80th year and they
formed a friendship that would last until his sudden death at 87. She traveled the Bay
Area and the country in search of musicians who had graced the Bop City stage to record
their memories for posterity. Now fifteen years beyond the release of this video, many of

Multi-woodwind maestro, Arlen Asher is
one of New Mexico’s long-standing jazz
luminaries. Born in 1929 in a small farming
community in Missouri, Asher moved to
Albuquerque in 1958. Prior to becoming a full time musician, he worked as an award-
winning producer and announcer for KNME-TV, KOB-TV and KHFM radio. He left
broadcasting to establish a private woodwind studio in 1965 and since then has been
teaching woodwind fundamentals and jazz improvisation to hundreds of students
throughout the US. In the 1970’s, he formed the Arlen Asher-Bob Brown Quartet, which
formed the basis of two jazz television series for KNME-TV and a series of concerts
that included guest artists such as trumpeter Clark Terry. In 1994, Arlen Asher joined
drummer, John Trentacosta’s group, Straight Up. Asher has appeared on numerous
CD’s including his own 2002 release, Another Spring , featuring a virtual Who’s Who
of New Mexico jazz talent. He also appears on Straight Up’s recording Live Jazz in the
Desert, a top selling local jazz CD in New Mexico. Straight Up has appeared at many
jazz festivals, including the Tucson and Sedona Jazz Festivals and Jazz In The Sangres
in Colorado. At 84, Arlen Asher remains active as a performer as well as hosting
“The Jazz Experience” broadcast every Monday morning on Santa Fe Public Radio

Tonight we kick off our first 3-day Route 66 Summerfest with a V.I.P. Reception at
6:30pm designed to celebrate and thank the sponsors and funders who make Route 66
Summerfest possible. The reception will be followed by the concert at 8pm by one of the
longest standing bands in jazz. The Yellowjackets have, throughout their storied 32-year
history, undergone numerous lineup changes and myriad life challenges but through it
all they have never been afraid to face new musical horizons. They have released over
20 CDs, earned 17 Grammy nominations and two Grammy awards, and have enjoyed
countless sold-out tours and worldwide critical acclaim. Often referred to as a fusion
band, the Yellowjackets are really so much more, having mastered the art of being both
accessible and adventurous, with strong grooves and melodies and surprising twists.
Their latest release, A Rise In The Road, “a 10-track study that burnishes the group’s
sterling reputation for high quality tonal explorations and ensemble execution,” introduces
the band’s newest member, bassist Felix Pastorius ((son of the legendary Jaco Pastorius)
who replaces Jimmy Haslip, one of the cornerstone members of the original group. The

Best known for his work with Chick Corea’s
seminal electric jazz-fusion group, Return to
Forever, Grammy winning bassist, Stanley Clarke has, for four decades, thrown down
the gauntlet as among the most chameleonic renaissance men of music. Renowned as
a jazz bassist on upright and electric instruments, his work has touched the full spectrum
of music from classical, film scores, and chamber music to rhythm & blues, pop, funk
and all genres of jazz–from straight-ahead and fusion to the coolest of smooth. His latest
recording, The Stanley Clarke Band, released in 2010, is, according to Clarke, new and
different from just about anything he’s done before. Featuring a range of collaborative
material that allowed him to venture to new levels of experimentation utilizing his arsenal of
bass instruments, the music, with long extended electric pieces, harkens back to the first
three albums of his solo career––Journey to Love, Stanley Clarke, and School Days–– with
long extended electric pieces. The Stanley Clarke Band brings its funky electric fusion to
the Lensic for this concert and features, in addtion to Clarke, Zach Brock, violin; John
Beasley, keyboards; and Michael Mitchell, drums $50/$40/$30/$20 ($5 discount for Members & Students. No Member Passes)

Since he emerged on the scene in 1980,
with the Lionel Hampton Orchestra and then,
shortly thereafter, with Art Blakey and the Jazz
Messengers, Terence Blanchard has been one
of the most prominent jazz artists today. An integral figure in the 1980s jazz resurgence, having
recorded several award-winning albums and performing with the jazz elite, he is a five-time
Grammy Award winner, renowned bandleader, recording artist, and composer of film scores and
soundtracks (several for Spike Lee films as well as for Broadway). Known as a straight-ahead
artist in the hard bop tradition, Blanchard has more recently utilized an African-fusion style of
playing that sets him apart from other trumpeters. Vanity Fair wrote “[Blanchard] plays the most
coolly expressive trumpet in jazz, transmuting the instrument’s repertoire of smears, growls,
peeps and blasts into an astonishingly fluid language both luxurious and controlled.” For his jazz
festival appearance, he will be joined by his quintet, and special guest, guitarist-vocalist, Lionel
Loueke plus Brice Winston, tenor saxophone; Fabian Almazan piano; Joshua Crumbly, bass;

Known for his charismatic power and bold innovative drive, pianist, NEA Jazz Master,
and nine-time Grammy award winner, Eddie Palmieri, has a musical career that has
spanned more than 50 years as a bandleader of salsa and Latin jazz orchestras. His
first professional work came playing timbales as a teenager in brother Charlie Palmieri’s
band. Eddie says he’s still a drummer at heart, but realized the piano –- which he’d
studied in this youth –- was the instrument for him. A titan of Latin Jazz, he has been
a musical force for since the 1950s, when he hosted the legendary mambo shows at
New York’s Palladium Ballroom. His playing skillfully fuses the rhythm of Puerto Rico
with the melody and complexity of his jazz influences, including Monk and fellow NEA
Jazz Masters Herbie Hancock and McCoy Tyner. Palmieri is a groundbreaking composer
and arranger who has carved a signature musical style that consistently challenges the
boundaries of both Salsa and Latin Jazz. He has been called “the most consistently
innovative artist in Afro-Cuban music in the United States for the past 30 years.” Joining

Vocalist, Mark Dankert is enamored of the emotional and spiritual aspects of singing and his
style is shaped by the influences of soul, blues, gospel, and jazz. He honed his style through
his long-term collaboration with guitarist, Lewis Winn and performs songs of various genres,
both familiar and unfamiliar, that are interpreted with an emotional resonance which is his
highest goal. Dankert will be joined by Lewis Winn, guitars; Rob “Milo” Jaramillo, bass;
and John Bartlit on drums and percussion. Right About Now. In early 2011, guitarist Lewis
Winn, bassist Jon McMillan, and drummer Jim Magnarella got together for an informal,
experimental jam session and found their creative chemistry so compelling that they
continued to meet regularly, amassing an impressive body of recorded works, until Jim’s
untimely passing in 2012. Lewis and Jon were determined to continue what they had
started with Jim and in late 2012 they got together with drummer, John Bartlit, with whom
they felt they could further develop their existing body of material and explore new territory.
They formed their new trio, Right About Now and, as they put it, their ongoing adventures
involve “intrepid exploration of uncharted territory and spirited retellings of their past exploits
as well as those of other composers.” $15/$10 Members & Students

thE BLACK IROn tRIO (J.A. DEAnE/CARLOS SAntIStEVAn/MILtOn VILLARRuBIA III)The final show in this year’s Roost Series features Local Poets Guild which has been
partnering with The Roost for over two years. Local Poets Guild director and award-
winning author and arts activist Lisa Gill, who frequently performs with musicians, will

literature. Collaborating with the spoken word artists throughout the event will be
the Santa Fe-based Black Iron Trio which includes J.A. Deane, lapsteel dulcimer and
effects; Carlos Santistevan, acoustic bass; and Milton Villarrubia III, drumkit and effects.

InPOSt ARtSPACE RECEPtIOnPOWER LInE: RECEnt PAIntIngS BY nInA ELDER
In Nina Elder’s paintings, we see not only the sweeping lines of cable that carry electricity
across the country, but also the structures that delineate different kinds of power. The paintings
included in Power Line are objective contemplations of fracking structures, hydroelectric
dams, telecommunication towers, airports and military bases. Painted in a style that is as
coolly engineered as the industry that they represent, this disarmingly beautiful body of work
quietly poses questions of human industriousness and our dominion over natural landscapes.

the Inpost Artspace has been presenting
exhibits since 1996, making the visual Arts a
vital part of the Outpost experience. Over the
years, more than 200 New Mexico based artists
(and beyond) have shown their work on these
walls. In 2012, the Inpost Artspace inaugurated
an official relationship with our friends at 516
ARtS by becoming a Satellite Gallery of 516,
curated by Claude Smith of 516 ARtS and
GuruAmrit Khalsa of the harwood Art Center.

What We Are
Outpost has been a non-profit arts organization since 1988. In 1990, we moved to our
own place — the Outpost Performance Space — a unique and intimate, non-smoking,
non-alcohol, alternative performance venue.
Where We Are
In the Summer of 2000, Outpost moved to 210 Yale SE just two blocks south of Central
in the heart of the University district. The Space is an elegant, nonprofit, no-nonsense,
community-based, performing arts center which we purchased in 2011.
What We do
We present a wide variety of music and more — over 100 shows a year plus classes and
educational programs — all kinds of jazz (dixie to bop to modern to the avant-garde);
folk, blues & roots music; experimental music; classical music; international music; kid’s
programs; poetry & spoken word; theater and performance art; puppets; visual arts
exhibits; and many other unique events. WE’RE PROUD to present and support the work
of local, as well as touring artists — recognized, as well as emerging artists.
how We do It
Outpost is a member-supported organization, also funded by grants (government &
foundation), donations, corporate sponsorships, and advertising, as well as by ticket
sales and countless hours of volunteer help. IT’S A TEAM EFFORT!
Why We do It
We do it because we love it. And because we believe that performers and audiences
deserve a place to meet and experience each other, up close, in a casual, but mutually
respectful environment.
