8 On 18 May a romantic city promenade once

again becomes the venue for the Summer at Stross, one of the most favourite events in Zagreb, which has been at-tracting an increasing num-ber of visitors year after year. The program will make you want to spend some time in this unique ambiance of the Old Town. There are so many events and programs planned for the next three months, that one does not know where to begin – perhaps with jazz, evergreen, or nostalgic 20th century music… Or maybe open-air movies and art in-stallations in front of the his-torical Lotrščak tower. Af-ter successfully hosting the Advent in Zagreb event last winter, this beautiful loca-tion is now turning to sum-mer, and the Tourist Board is planning an even richer and more diverse program this year. ZagrebTIMES 5THURSDAY / 18 MAY / 2017

SEMI-NEW YEAR’S EVEOn 30 June a Semi New Year’s Eve is traditionally celebrated at Stross. This is an event for children, who are on their summer break and they can stay up longer, at least until 10pm, saying goodbye to the first half of 2017 with great fireworks. Two concerts are held, one at 9pm and the other one after the fireworks at 10.10pm.

A SMALL PUPPET THEATREA Small Puppet Theatre is organised for the young ones, every day at 7.30pm. Famous children’s shows are put up by members of LET Puppet Theatre. Entry is free.

ART COLONYEvery day during Summer at Stross explore the art colony, a selling exhibition of the works of local artists. Members of the Croatian Fine Arts Association exhibit their watercolours, paintings, drawings, fashion accessories, illustration and valuable souvenirs, at favourable prices.

MIXED-BREED DOGS EXHIBITIONAdults and children, locals and tourists, and even dogs will enjoy the time they spent at Stross this year. In July a mixed-breed dogs exhibition is held, as organisers believe that pedigree dogs unfairly get all the attention. Fun and entertainment is guaranteed for both four-legged pets and their owners.

called is the place of special atmosphere – people are more relaxed and there is simply less stress. Summer at Stross is an excellent alterna-tive for everyone who plans to stay in the city during hot summer days, and families with children will also be able to enjoy the programme.Coming to Strossmayerovo šetalište promenade is an adventure in itself. You can either start from the central square, Trg bana Jelačića, or take the shortest funicular in the world in Tomićeva street to get up there. You will be welcome by the characters from Zagreb’s past, as a part of the Zagreb Time Machine, and you will also explore two sides of one city – a hectic daily rhythm, against a ro-mantic side hidden behind Zagreb’s facades. The Summer at Stross event was first held in 2000, and it was inspired by Montmartre, a romantic Paris promenade, as an idyllic combination of musicians, theatre, good wine, and romantic nights.

Mirogoj, the central cemetery in Zagreb, is located on the slopes

of Medvednica and is considered to be one of the most beautiful cemeteries in Europe. Howev-

er, Mirogoj is also a beautiful park and an outdoor art gallery. The arcades are the most beau-tiful part of the cemetery – the construction bega in 1879, only

three years after Mirogoj was opened, and they were complet-ed thirty eight years later. Miro-

goj is the resting place of many famous Croats and the complex also contains a number of valu-

able monuments made by promi-nent Croatian artists.

8The picturesque St. Mark's Church is

one of the oldest build-ings in Zagreb and one of its symbols, distinctive for its roof made of multicolor roof tiles. The church has existed since the 13th cen-tury, but it famous roof is much younger – it was in-stalled during its most re-cent reconstruction in the second half of the 19th

century. The roof features emblems of the Croatian regions of Dalmatia and Slavonia on the left side, and the Zagreb City em-blem on the right side. There are three altars in the interior, sculpted by Ivan Meštrovićm, and Kljaković's sacristy paint-ed from the floor to the ceiling. Organ concerts of-ten take place here.

As one of the best preserved mon-uments of old Zagreb, this is the only remaining gate of the former city defense system. It was built in the 13th century and given its present design in 1760. The pas-

sageway within the gate contains a chapel with a picture of St. Mary of the Stone Gate, the city guardian, which according to a legend sur-vived a major fire in 1731 without any damage.STONE GATE

8The history of the Art Pavilion is in a way the

history of the Croatian 20th century fine arts. This is one of the oldest exhibition areas in this part of Europe, spe-

cifically designed for major exhibitions. It is situated be-tween the Central Railway Station and Zrinjevac, in the very heart of Lenuci’s Green Horseshoe.

FUNICULAR

8The funicular pro-vides organized pub-

lic transport of passen-gers to the upper part of Zagreb. It connects the Downtown and the Old Town every working day and on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays from 6.30am to 10pm and has to this day retained its original exterior design and struc-ture, as well as most of the technical characteris-tics given to it by its build-ers in 1890 when it was opened. It leaves every ten minutes and the price of one ride is HRK 4. Com-pared to other cable cars intended for public trans-port, its track of only 66 meters makes it the short-est one in the world.

Zagreb CathedralThe Cathedral of the As-sumption of Blessed Vir-gin May, Saint Stephen and Saint Ladislaus, or the Zagreb Cathedral is the largest Croatian sa-cral building and one of the most valuable monu-ments of the Croatian cultural heritage. The church has stood in the same location since 1093 and the construction of the present building be-gan in the 13th century. The last major recon-struction was made at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, while the tow-ers are still being recon-structed in stages. The church is open for tour-ists, may be entered at any time of the day, and a mass in Croatian is held several times a day.

Hundreds of food pro-ducers from Zagreb and

its surrounding areas arrive every day at the Dolac marketplace, lo-cated only a few steps

from the central city square, to sell fresh

fruits, vegetables, meat, cheese and cream, flow-

ers… Dolac is referred to as the city belly be-

cause it has fed the local residents for 85 years. At the top of the stairs there is a sculpture of a traditional producer

and seller - kumica.

Croatian National Theater8The neo-baroque

Croatian National Theater building, a mas-terpiece of late historicism designed by the Austrian architect Ferdinand Fell-

ner and German architect Hermann Helmer, is cer-tainly one of the most im-pressive buildings in Za-greb. Opened in 1895 and seating 750 people, it has

one iron curtain and seven painted curtains displayed on different formal occa-sions. Theatre goers can enjoy drama, opera or bal-let there.

LOTRŠĆAK DOLAC

St. Catherine’s

Church

The tower was built in mid-13th century to protect the south city gate and has been used throughout history as living quarters, a ware-house, a coffee shop… Tourists can enjoy a spectacular view of the city from the top of the tower, visit an exhibi-tion or buy some local products in the souve-nir shop. The Grič Can-on is on the fourth floor, and it greets the resi-dents of Zagreb every day precisely at noon.

St. Catherine’s Church is the most famous Croa-tian baroque church. It is located on Katarina

Zrinska Square, erected as part of a former Jesuit

complex in Zagreb Old Town. It was built from 1620 to 1632 and its six

side chapels contain five baroque altars dating

back to the 17th century, and a marble altar from

1732.

Museum of Broken Relationships

Lauba cooperates, exhibits and shares knowledge with peer institutions to keep up to date with and encourage modern art production in Croatia. In addition to unusual exhibits and features, Lauba is designed as a House for People and Art, available to all audiences.

The Museum is a result of a traveling exhibition

of items deriving from broken relationships. An

emotional separation may be overcome by

donating memories to the museum collection

and thus recognizing the end of the relationship.

The Kulmer Palace is full of different objects, from matchboxes to wedding

gowns.

A fearless fighter for human rights and the first female journalist in Croatia has always been one step ahead of her time. She became famous for her romantic novels with elements of national history. The statue is the work of Stjepan Gračan.

The statue of the first Croatian king, located on the square carrying his name, was sculpted by Robert Frangeš Mihanović in 1938. After the Second World War, the monument was put on the square in 1947.

The Biggest Flee Market in Zagreb

HRELIĆ

8Nobody really knows how Hrel-ic came to be. But shortly after its

founding, it turned into one of Zagreb’s most legendary sites. On the farthest out-skirts of Croatian capital, you can see this large fair of used goods. From clothes to shoes, from vintage items to computer components sold without guarantee, eve-rything can be found on this strange and unique place. Sounds interesting? Then

come with a large bag, sharpen your bar-gain talents, and indulge into the crazi-est shopping spree you ever took part in!How to reach Hrelic? The easiest way is to take a cab. The average price from Zagreb’s center should be around 50 HRK/6.50 €. If you have your own vehi-cle, you will have to pay 10 HRK/1.30 € for parking. If you use a tram, take num-bers 14 to Zaprude or 6 to Most Mladosti,

and walk a bit next to the causeway. Hrel-ic is organized every Sunday and Wednes-day. Coming early in the morning is a good idea (you don’t want others to buy all the good stuff) but coming late has an advan-tage of huge sales. Be advised, Hrelic is not the cleanest space in the world, but its charm is undeniable.Hrelić is a flea market with style, where peo-ple sell absolutely everything you can im-agine. No visit comes without at least one purchase. Maybe it will be a vintage hair drier? Or a typewriter waging five kilo-grams? Maybe your senior relatives will like those old watches? And who knows, if you are a good at bargains, you can end up with ten LPs for the price of one. Don’t think of Hrelic as a dirty place (although it is not that clean, to be honest). As a mat-ter of fact, chances are you will meet a lot of influential Croatian people there. Theater and film workers always seek inspi-ration or props for artistic projects. Musi-cians are pursuing old instruments in good shape, while literature people seek books and albums for their needs. Stamp collec-tors are also on duty, as well as collectors of various natures. You don’t need to belong in either of these groups to love being on Hrel-ic, of course. If you end up liking the place, bargain away! M

8Britanski trg (British Square) in Zagreb is,

of course, named after the British and the good rela-tions they had with Croats throughout history. It can easily be reached from the capital’s main square, Trg bana Jelacica, by ten min-ute walk, or by simply tak-ing two stops with a tram. If you choose the latter, get on a 1, 6 or 11 tram heading east. The square is often bypassed by tourist guides, usually be-cause it lacks cultural fea-tures such as monuments or statues. However, it is still a charming place which has many things for visitors to enjoy. After all, experiencing a country doesn’t necessary mean one has to run around museums and frantically snap photos. Sometimes, a quiet hour on a café terrace watching people passing by, flipping through a magazine with an un-pronounceable name or learning small bits of a language from the closest table can be more fulfilling then a constant rush for photo material.British square is also known as Mali Plac (“Little Market-place”) as it is smaller then Dolac. Yet it is still of considerable size and offers everything needed for a good lunch. During the workweek, Britanac is usually crowded with potatoes, salads, apples, pines and all other things you see at the greengrocers. It opens early in the morning (as a matter of fact, if you pass by it around 6:00 a.m. chances are you will see people prepping veggies on the tables) and closes around 3 pm. Older women, known as kumice, usually sell their own cheese and cream. On Sundays, the vegetables are replaced with antique items available for sale. Old telephones, ancient lamps, interesting books (some even in foreign languages), early 20th-century dolls, medals, uniforms, swords and treasure chests are just a few things you can find in this open-air museum with exhibits on sale. A good place to visit for your own entertainment, and also for buying gifts for friends and family back home. A club of dedicated Citroen owners sometimes organizes an old-tim-

er car exhibition in the evening hours. Not only can you see these classy European machines in their full glory, but you can also talk to the peo-ple who own them and ask for mechanical ad-vice or the story behind the charming vehicles.

8Sightseeing while riding a Routemaster double decker

is a new tourist offer in Zagreb. The bus rides every weekend, de-parting from Bakačeva street and taking you to 17 most important locations around the city. The bus which is used today to tour Zagreb was made in 1960, it was used in London and was seats 20 people. The tour lasts for 45 minutes, it is 16 kilometres long, and starts at every full hour. The ticket is bought when you enter the bus, the fare is HRK 90 for adults, and HRK 45 for children aged 3-12.

8 Take a sightseeing tour of Za-greb from the comfort of an

electrical replica of a Ford T, the first serial car designed and man-ufactured over a hundred years ago. Places of departure are Zrin-jevac and Katarinin trg, and you can choose between three differ-ent routes. The vehicle is almost completely noiseless, and the driv-er wearing an old top hat and a cape will take you back in time.Untill the end of September you can ride for free around Zrinjevac and Trg kralja Tomislava. You can drive freely between 12 am to 6 pm every Wedensday within the project "Sourcing on Electricity" under the general sponsorship of HEP Hrvatska elektroprivreda.

8Tourist bus-es take two

routes – the red and the green one. The red line will take you through the city centre; it is 12.5 km long, with six stops. The green line is 32.5 km long, and it will take you all the way to Lake Jarun, Bundek and Maksimir Park, with seven stops along the way.

8If you take a Segway, the first self-balanc-

ing personal transport-er in the world, tech-nologically amazing, environmentally friend-ly and extremely fun to ride, you will experience the atmosphere in Zagreb first-hand. Take in all the col-ours and the smells, and surely the most stunning views will stay with you for a long time – Lenuci’s Horseshoe, the Old Town, or Mirogoj cemetery. You can choose between four different tours, be-tween 50 and 180 minutes long.

Zagreb offers great variety of places that children will enjoy. Take them to Maksimir, ride around the town in the tourist train, visit the biggest little railway model in this part of the Europe... And be sure - it's not only the kids who will love those activities, so will you!

8Zagreb ZOO stretches on 7 hectares of the south-

ern part of Maksimir Park, and boasts nearly 300 animal spe-cies. The ZOO has numerous external dwellings and sever-al theme pavilions. The oldest inhabitant is a crocodile from Nile, who came to live here in 1972. The ZOO organizes events, workshops and presentations. The ZOO was under construction for two years, and follow-ing the completions of works last year it was opened for visi-tors. One of the nov-elties is a large avi-ary for hundreds of African birds. There is also the new entrance with video surveillance and a visi-tor counter, an additional east entrance, a souvenir shop with around 300 authentic souvenirs that is thre times larger than the previous one, and an addition-

al educational centre. The boil-er room that used to run on fuel oil has been turned into an en-vironment-friendly one, running on pellets. Two bridges have been built and cultural monuments have been restored – the Napoli Fisher-

man (Napuljski rib-ar), and the Lion’s Bridge (Lavlji most), adorned with four new stone lion stat-ues onto which eve-ry child wants to climb to have their picture taken. The spacious Kide-po Lion’s Rock was also erected, as well as a new enclosure for the globally en-dangered red pan-da, and a Madagas-car area. A so-called

“spider’s web” made out of rope, trampolines, benches and deck chairs has been fitted on Swan Island (Labuđi otok) which has recently been connected via Darwin’s Bridge.

8A few years ago Zagreb Electric Tram company (ZET) introduced

free train rides for tourists, and kids are crazy about them. The train rides every weekend between 10am and 7.20pm, eve-ry 40 minutes, along the following route: Ban Jelačić Square, Ilica, Frankopanska, Masarykova, Teslina, Praška, Jurišićeva to Trg žrtava fašizma, and then back to the central square.

BACKO MINI EXPRESSThe biggest model train in Southeast Europe can be found in Gundulićeva street 4. The man behind the idea is Antun Urbić, who got his first model train from Switzerland when he was five. He was fascinat-ed by mini trains which looked exactly like the real thing, so he decided to make his first model in the attic of his house. He soon developed the idea of opening it for visitors. Today he has over 1000 meters of rails and nearly 100 trains, railways sta-tions, and shops. During winter days and the very famous Advent in Zagreb event a model of the Snow Queen ski race was added, and it was a huge success. Backo Mini Express broke all records when it introduced an Advent Fairytale, hosting more than 2700 foreign visitors, which is a 50% increase compared to last year. Backo Mini Express is open for visitors every day.

8Go to Popov toranj and reach for the stars… The

tower dome is home to a century-old Zagreb observatory, opened on 5 December 1903. City fa-thers believed that Popov toranj was ideal for an observatory, as it stands high enough over the city, and the telescope can reach above the polluted atmosphere layers, where the clear sky opens right before your eyes. The tower is in the very centre of Zagreb, and can be reached on foot.

8Children who are 14 and older can play a

popular game room es-cape – they are locked in a room, and have 60 min-utes to find a way out by solving different puzzles. Considering the size of the city, Zagreb’s offer of room escape venues plac-es it in the very top – the total of 10 rooms are on of-fer in four locations. Es-cape room is a game for two to six players (some-times a maximum of five), who have an hour to dis-cover all hidden objects and keys, decipher codes, solve puzzles and riddles, think logically, and work together on solving the problem and finally break-ing out. Children and par-ents can choose from four different room escapes in Zagreb and play the one they like the most.

8Not far from Zagreb city center, a center

for children and adults has been opened which gives you an opportunity to spend your free time in a fun and educational way choosing between 250 wooden games, puz-zles and different brain teasers and riddles.A smart playground is an educational center unique in the world, intended for both children and adults, opened on Zavrtnica, not far from Zagreb city cent-er. It is an entirely new concept which gives vis-itors an opportunity to spend their free time in a fun and educational way choosing between 250 wooden games, puzzles and different brain teas-ers and riddles. All visi-

tors in the educational center have an opportuni-ty to stimulate their brain and keep if fit through play and fun, with profes-sional staff that will help them solve games and ap-ply what they learned in everyday life. The first part of this edu-cational center consists of a smart playroom where all age groups areallowed, whether com-ing as families, individu-als or groups. Here, they can play games that re-quire a lot of brain rack-ing, such as the world’s most famous brain teas-ers: tangram, pentom-ino, the love test, pyra-mid, and many others. Some of the games are of XXL size, so solving them activates the en-

tire human body, and some are competitive, so players need to make an effort to think as fast and hard as they can. The smart playroom is open for all visitors, eve-ry day from 9 am until 10 pm. All activities can be carried out in Croatian, English or Spanish.

GASTRO

These are the true flavours of Zagreb

MUST TRY

In local restaurans ask for specialties from this region and shop for products that reflect the unique identity of Zagreb surroundingsAUTHOR RENE BAKALOVIĆ

8Zagreb’s gastronomy is a perfect combination of culinary traditions – of the clergy, the nobility

and then the bourgeois, the so-called purgeraj (from the German word Burger meaning citizen), and the rustic tradition of the picturesque ring encircling the city: Zagorje and Prigorje, which developed for nine long centuries. In the urban life of Zagreb, the resi-dents always wanted to show they were able to keep up with the global culinary trends present in major metropolitan centers in neighboring countries – Vien-na and Budapest. Women from the villages of Zagorje and Prigorje brought first-class fresh ingredients to marketplaces in Zagreb on a daily basis. This top se-lection available in Zagreb’s marketplaces has spread to all Croatian regions, as it becomes evident in the restaurants all over the city: Dalmatian, Istrian and Slavonian cuisine. They are now an exhibition of Cro-atian gastro icons.

This two-piece dairy package has developed into a symbol of authentic culinary heritage. Extremely simple, yet very delicate. This cult-status duo is only produced from the milk of cows grazing unpolluted pastures, unquestionably fresh full-fat sour cream and carefully drained cheese. Beside fresh bread, you only need a little salt and perhaps some hot paprika.

Cottage cheese and cream

ŠTRUKLIŠtrukli is a favorite coocked or gratinated pastry, a result

of the transformation of the German strudel on its way east. Štrukli are commonly mentioned in the context

of presenting Croatia to the world. It makes sense: the stuffing consists of cheese

and cream. In Esplanade, the most prestigious hotel both in former

Yugoslavia and now in Croatia, štrukli has been enjoyed by kings and queens, the most prominent statesmen, and the greatest stars of the film

and music industries.

KRAM POGAČEPork scratches are not exclusive to Croatia, but nobody is as mad about them as Croats are. The best ones are sold at very high prices. We love pork scratches so much we put them in the basic food product - pogača, the predecessor of bread. Kram pogača is a small pogača seasoned with ground pork scratches and pepper. These small bites are perfectly combined with a glass of wine or beer.

ZAGORJE SOUPCroats love soups and make them from all kinds of ingredients. Broths like this Zagorje soup can replace an entire meal. This is no wonder - a real Zagorje soup inevitably contains enough good cured meat, dry and fresh mushrooms, root vegetables, onions, garlic and potatoes, hot paprika, pepper, laurel leaf, wine vinegar and, finally, a spoon of sour cream.

TURKEY WITH MLINCIIn its native country of America, turkeys are now huge domesticated

birds. The Zagorje turkey is the smallest protected species, semi-wild

and requiring plenty of outdoor space to survive. This is why its meat it fabulously

succulent. It does not require lots of spices, only mlinci, a traditional kind of pasta gratinated on a wood oven and then doused in gravy, as a side dish.

Good news, beer lovers: Croatia's craft-beer scene is stronger then ever with new breweries and beer bars spanning round. Raise a pint to the best new beers in Zagreb bars

Nova runda Craft Brewery was established by two friends, Marko Filip and Miroslav Šuvak. Their first and so far only beer C4 contains four varieties of hop (Chinook, Cascade, Centennial and Citra), guaranteeing an explosion of taste.

Bujska pivovara is the only brewery of this kind in Istria. Product range includes red, pale and dark San Servolo beers, all unfiltered and unpasteurized.

Bošnjak Beer is made by the Bošnjak family from Sičica near Nova Gradiška. In addition to pale ale, they also make dark beer and pale lager.

The Fifth Element is a special brewery within Pivovara Daruvar. Their products include: American Blonde Ale (ABA), Baltic Porter (BART), and LELA.

The first mini-brewery and pub in Zagreb. They started by making their pale beer Zlatni medvjed, dark beer Crna kraljica, and mixed Mrki medvjed. Their Agram Stout is a dark beer made from roasted barley and malt.

Dino Konta and Sanja Cvetanović started brewing their own beer after experimenting in their kitchen. They started their Pivionica brewery and proceeded to make Fulir, a pale lager, made from natural ingredients.

For as long as these parts have been inhabited, wine has been an inseparable component of both the daily routine and festivitiesAUTHOR SAŠA ŠPIRANEC

The great local wine varieties

8Wine is one of the most valuable elements of

the Croatian tradition and gastronomic heritage. For as long as these parts have been inhabited, wine has been an inseparable compo-nent of both the daily routine and festivities. Over centu-ries, each Croatian wine re-gion developed its own dis-tinctive wine varieties that fully adapted to the climate, soil and expectations of their residents. When you find yourself in one of the wine regions of Croatia such as Dalmatia,

Istria, Hilly Croatia or Sla-vonia, don’t forget to taste some of the wines favorite among the local population. In Dalmatia, it is plavac mali. This is the most important and the most represented red variety in Croatia. It yields soft, ripe and succu-lent wines when offered in a lower price range and origi-nates from Dalmatian fields situated in ravines hidden in endless karst. On the other hand, when it comes from steep slopes facing the sun and the sea, usually from islands or peninsulas such

as Hvar, Brač and Pelješac, it gives powerful, warm, strong and ripe wines, per-fectly reflecting the harsh conditions that created them with their richness and con-centration.When in Istria, malvazija is the most important variety to try. A white wine full of freshness and pleasant aro-mas of ripe fruits, such as peaches and hints of blos-soming acacias. In addition to this basic edition, malva-sia can also be found in more ambitious forms after ageing for a long time and develop-

ing a more complex aromat-ic set. When in hilly Croatia, look for aromatic white varieties such as sauvignon blanc or Riesling (locally referred to as rajnski rizling). They also use many other varieties to make wine in the region, but what they all have in com-mon are lively acids and a highly refreshing character. The wines of hilly Croatia work ideally as an aperitif, refreshment in summertime, or to go with a light meal.Slavonia and the Danube Region are an empire of graševina, the most impor-tant and represented white variety, but also a general type. Graševina is a good-times wine, and is ideal to go with your lunch. It is normal-ly bold and refreshing with attractive aromas of apple, pineapple or citrus, and is offered at very affordable prices. Sometimes, when it comes from later harvests, it shows quite a different face and its aromas.

8If you want to avoid hot summer streets, go to Sljeme, where the tem-

perature is always 10 degrees lower. High-category hotels Tomislavov dom and Snježna kraljica, located at the very top of Medvednica, have record occupancy rates in summer months. The guests are main-ly foreign families with children who take every opportunity to experience the des-tination in a different way. Restaurants on Sljeme have an excellent gastronomic of-fer. Citizens of Zagreb hope that they will soon be able to use a cable car, which is now unfortunately not in operation, to get to Sljeme.

EXPLORE ZAGORJE

THURSDAY / 18 MAY / 2017

8 Life is a journey, and those who travel live

two lives. The lucky ones will, at least once on that journey, walk the green hills of Zagorje. It offers peace and close contact with nature each step you take, and opens its hands of a hospitable and welcoming host. Zagorje – the green entrance to Croatia is the best region for vacation. It is the oasis of preserved na-ture, clean air, greenery and healthy thermal waters. est number of thermal springs – they have over time been transformed into modern spas with excellent accommoda-tion and gastro offer, making Zagorje a true Croatian conti-nental riviera.Zagorje spas will meet your needs if you want to relax your mind and body. A water planet in Tuhelj Thermae perfectly combines dynamic slides and “wild” rivers with saunas and healing mud rich in miner-als. Thermae Jezerčica is the place where volcanic drop-lets are healing, and you will feel rejuvenated through the touch of wellness. The Vil-la Magdalena Hotel creates such a special, intimate at-mosphere that it won the title of the best continental small

family hotel several years in a row. They say that every per-son wants to be pampered once in a while, and the Ho-tel Kaj in Marija Bistrica of-fers exactly that, and more – you can be pampered and at the same time enjoy the del-icacies offered on your plate and in your glass. It is a place of good energy. Krapinske Toplice Spa is another place where you will feel health being restored in your body. Anyone who has ever been in a thermal spa in Zagorje felt like starting over. Close encounter with hot minerals from the depths of the Earth is the ticket for the feeling of the new birth. Locals have en-joyed the warm water of Aq-uae Vivae since the old Roman times. It is not known wheth-er the Neanderthal man from Krapina also used the springs for bathing, but we do know that he lived in the cave in Hušnjakovo, which is today home to the most famous Eu-ropean museum dedicated to the Neanderthal era. This is perhaps proof that the civili-zation of the thermal water is eternal. Feel it...

fact!

Special magic is created by the labyrinth of wine roads

in Zagorje. Unforgettable, because it crosses hilltops offering a breath-taking view. Inspirational, because it includes green vineyards, wooden cottages, hard-working people and welcoming smiles. Irresistible, because it combines the tastes of juicy roasted turkey with carefully selected wines. Pleasant, because the wind carries the sounds of domestic songs over the hills. This is not a labyrinth where you will get lost. Vuglec Breg is one of the most beautiful places in the heart of Croatian Zagorje - the unique, real and authentic surrounding creates superb atmosphere and you will feel nothing but joy. This facility combines the tradition of Zagorje with modern standards in tourism.

8The largest, the old-est and the most popu-

lar national park in Croatia boasts 16 lakes and numerous creeks and brooks. The park enjoys the protection of the UNESCO as natural herit-age, due to its exquisite beau-ty of the woods and the blue-greens of the water which creates a special atmosphere. The Korana river, one of four Karlovac rivers, has its source in the area of Plitvice Lakes. The Korana has four waterfalls and flows toward the Golubinjača river. Five years ago the park recorded over a million tourists, an all-time high. The Tourist Board claims that the beauty of this natural pearl cannot be de-scribed with words – it has to be experienced first-hand.

OpatijaThe pearl of Kvarner bay is a popular winter and summer destination, with average temperature of 10°C in winter, and 25°C in summer. Numerous resorts and villas stretch along the coast, and the view is absolutely amazing. The first hotel in the Adriatic, the Kvarner Hotel, was built in Opatija, and today it is the most recognisable tourist destination. For visitors who prefer active holiday, Učka Mountain is the place for rock-climbing and cycling.

TrakošcanThe Trakošćan Castle is a protected cultural and historical heritage. A park and the woods with a lake surround the caste. It was built in late 13th century, and reconstructed in mid-19th century, when the return to nature and family tradition became popular. The museum has a valuable collection of works ranging from the renaissance to historicism.

The Island of HvarAccording to some portals, the Island of Hvar is one of the most beautiful islands in the world, with mild climate, numerous tourist attractions, cultural monuments, and plenty of wine and olives. Although it is detached from the mainland, everything is available on the island, and there is a feeling of mild isolation, which is exactly what some tourists want on holidays.

HOW TO GET THERE Ferry boat from Split, HRK 40 per person, ferry boat from Drvenik HRK 18 per person

The entire historical heart of Split, including the Diocletian’s Palace, is on UNESCO world heritage list. The palace was built by Diocletian, a Roman emperor, who wanted to spend the last years of his life in this very special place with wonderful Mediterranean climate,

overlooking the sea. Apart from historical heritage, Split boasts a rich gastronomic offer, countless cultural events, as well as clubs where the best parties are organized. After touring the city, Marjan hill is a great place for the active part of your holiday - cycling, hiking or simply going for a walk.
