12 WEEKS : JUNE 5 - AUGUST 25
Our 34th Camp Year!
SUMMER ART CAMP 2017
1
Summer Art Camp offers over 200 classes over 12 ses-sions in a creative, supportive atmosphere that combines exploration and learning with serious fun! Taught by ex-perienced art educators and professional artists, Summer Art Camp offers unique opportunities for youth, ages .3-16 of all skill levels in all mediums. Our goal is to balance skill development and problem solving, while fostering creativity, confidence, and self-expression.
Join the Wayne Art Center this summer as we search for Lost Worlds using awe-inspiring stories from the past to create art, learn about art history, unearth se-crets from our ancient ancestors and, in the process, learn a little more about ourselves. Become an art ex-plorer as we travel through lost worlds and past civiliza-tions to discover how peoples from long ago have im-pacted the present. We will uncover rare and amazing artifacts, diverse and colorful cultures, master artists, and creative inventors throughout the ages. Explore the Ju-rassic period full of brave burning lava flows, sketch a T-Rex hunting for food, make wall paintings as the cave-man did in dark caves at the dawn of time, or dive into the deep sea to catch a glimpse of a giant squid or cap-ture the Loch Ness monster. Ride on armored horses with the Knights of the Round Table, learn to illuminate medieval manuscripts, and journey to distant lands and galaxies throughout the millennium.
JOIN US this summer in exploring our
world as we travel through ART!

What summer camp offers:
3
Week 1: The Land Before Time Travel back to the land before time and learn about the earliest humans on earth and how they lived! Discover giant lizards, brave the heat of erupting volcanos, study the wooly mammoth and saber tooth tiger, and experience the wonders of writings and hieroglyphics, known to us today as cave art! You will design clothing that ancient humans may have worn during the ice age, draw and paint dinosaurs and the environments where they tread; all while exploring the world at the dawn of time, imagining both the dangers and the wonders of the deep past!
Week 2: Under the Sea There is a hidden world under the sea! Jump in and explore with us! From legends of Atlantis, to giant squid, the loch ness monster, coral reef, and real like aquatic monsters we will explore all things deep sea!! This week we will explore the wild and wonderful underwater life, both legend and reality.
Week 3: Jurassic Worlds It’s a T-Rex…..RUN! Travel back in time to when dinosaurs roamed the earth. Have you ever wondered what the Triassic and Jurassic periods looked like? What types of vegetation and plant life flour-ished before human beings existed? Discover and imagine what it was like when dinosaurs reined supreme. Explore dinosaur fossils and create foot prints from clay. Learn how to construct robotic dinosaurs and set them free to roam the halls of the Wayne Art Center. This week, we create works of art that are inspired by dy-namic landscapes, giant lizards, ancient birds, and sea creatures from the earliest periods of earth’s long history.
Week 4: Futuristic Worlds Robots, spaceships, distant planets…. What will the world look like in 10, 20…….100 years? This week, campers will become art astrono-mers and stretch their imaginations to create art that reflects the future. How will futuristic cities be constructed? What will our ro-botic counterparts really look like? What kinds of creatures will still exist and what new ones will evolve? Campers will explore, and express through art, the environments of planets known and un-known. Jump into WAC’s Time Machine and join us as we explore the future and what may lay lightyears beyond our universe!
Week 5: Microscopic Worlds Discover the myriad microscopic worlds that coexist on our planet; from the tiniest of insects to the smallest of them all, the atom. As art scientists, join us as we look through our microscopes to set eyes upon everything from bugs to flowers to plants to human cells. Art is all about LOOKING and this week we’re going to look long and hard at the tiniest worlds that exist all around us; worlds that the artists within us will observe and truly appreciate.
Week 6: Mythological Beasts Join King Arthur and become a Knight of the Round Table as you explore the art, music, and architecture of the Middle Ages, also know as the Medieval Period! From clashing swords to magnificent feasts to the melodic sounds of the harp and flute, the middle ages has much to reveal. Art, from Byzantine to Gothic, portrayed kings and queens, towns and villages, churches, and battle grounds. This week, you’ll create a medieval world of your own and set your im-aginations ablaze while discovering these exciting worlds from ag-es past!
Week 7: Enter the Universe Mission to Mars! Journey through a black hole and into another dimension this week when we explore deep space! The colors of the universe are vast. The mystery! The intrigue! This week we will be inspired by all things in space. Build a rocket ship, paint colorful landscapes of Mars, or Jupiter, in-vent creatures and aliens that live on imaginary planets. We blast into space this week! Buckle up and join us!
Week 8: Ancient Civilizations From Rome’s ancient colosseum to the temples of Greece to the tombs of the Egyptian pharaohs, we will explore the art and cultures of these great civilizations from the past. Be an archeologist and take a closer look at the Egyptian pyramids, decipher and create your own hieroglyphics, discover the stories behind antiquities’ earliest clay sculptures, and find out more about the myths surrounding Greek and Roman gods and goddesses. Whether discovering Odysseus or Zeus, Athena or Persephone, the ancient world is sure to capture your imagination and ignite your curiosity about these ancient peoples from the past.
Week 9: Art of the Middle Ages Joust your way into the studios and join us around the artist round table! This week we explore the Middle Ages with knights, ancient music, kings and queens, castles, home life and clothing of the time. We find inspiration this
week in the art and times of the Middle Ages!
Week 10: Ancient Kingdoms of Asia Join us on our discovery of East Asian countries and explore one of the most ancient, diverse, and rich cultures in the eastern hemisphere. It was here in Asia, that humans began to stand upright more than 1 million years ago! This marks the very beginnings of life as we know it, from building fires for food and warmth, to gathering wood for shelter. It was here in Asia, ancient China in particular, that type printing was first discovered. These first printing plates used small clay pieces for type. Come and immerse yourself in these ancient kingdoms of old, create Japanese scrolls, form clay sculpture, decorative carvings, musical instruments and Indian painting. Take part in designing ethnic and traditional fashions and learn about Indian, Thai and Chinese cui-sine and create Indian jewelry, paintings and pottery.
Week 11: Mythology Myths and legends are part of our daily lives. Who hasn’t heard about the Roman god, Hercules, famous for his strength and far-reaching adventures? Then, of course, there’s the legendary Pocahontas who, it is said, saved the life of Captain John Smith, the founder of Jamestown. This week explore the stories, myths, and legends from our the distant past. We’ll create paintings, prints, and sculpture based on Greek and Roman gods and goddesses, Native Americans Indians, American folklore, and African and Latin American folktales. Discover these great stories and myths from the past and think about ways that you can create your own legends at the Wayne Art Center this summer!
Week 12: Rainforest and Tropical Paradises
Rainforests are the “jewels of the earth”. Rich in flora and fauna, col-orfully unique species of birds and animals, rainforests are generally located in the tropical regions of our world. This week, we will take a closer look at the landscapes, flowers, animals and people that pop-ulate and preserve rainforests that are critical to our existence. Paint colorful parrots and salamanders, create a collage of jungle flora and fauna and build pots, cups and bowls painted with the rich col-
ors of these vi-brant
lands.

AGES 3-5 YEARS
Budding Artists: 3-4 Let your child’s painting, printmaking and collage skills bloom in a fun, social setting! Their imaginations will grow
as they plant the seeds for a creative life. Projects will be two- and three-dimensional, including collage and air-
dry clay sculptures. Please note: all budding artists must be potty trained!
Pre-School Art: 4-5 Our preschool artists will go on an adventure together! Using all different kinds of art materials—paint, colored
paper, crayons, pastels, Model Magic, and more—they will explore fun projects and learn about color, shapes,
and creativity! Projects will be based on the week’s camp theme.
AGES 5-8 YEARS
Art Quest: 6-8 Join us on a creative quest! The mission? Explore new artistic mediums like CrayPas, tempera paint or air-dry
clay, and add your own spin to each day’s projects. This class builds on artists’ creativity and teaches them new
techniques to strengthen their skills as art makers.
Creative Drama: 6+ All the world’s a stage… or at least, all the Wayne Art Center! Make our studio into your stage as we explore all
aspects of putting on a play, from learning your lines to making a set to acting and singing in front of an audi-
ence! This week will conclude with a short performance for parents and other campers.
Lego Mindstorms!: 6+ Interested in playing around with robots all week? In this week long summer camp, campers will get to build and
program their own robots! Each individual will learn strategies for designing, building and programming their re-
spective robots to move and interact. At the end of the week campers will demonstrate what they've learned in
a competitive exhibit for everyone to see!
Mudworks: 6-8 Get muddy, get messy, get creative with clay! This class encourages children’s natural instincts to play with clay
