Board MeetingsThe Emporia Recreation Commission holds public board meetings the 3rd Monday of every month at 5:30pm. Meetings are held at Lee Beran Recreation Center located at 313 W. 4th Avenue, Emporia, KS 66801.  Meeting dates are subject to change.  If you wish to address the board, you are asked to fill out a public comment card before the start of the meeting, and give it to the Clerk of the Board to be included in the agenda.

Refund Policy1. Transfers may be made to other activities if a program is cancelled by Emporia Recreation or the participant is unable to attend. This request must be made before the activity/practice begins. 2. A credit voucher can be issued if the participant is unable to transfer or attend. This request must be made within three days of the start of the activity/ practice. The credit will remain good for one year from the date requested. 3. A refund check may be issued if the participant is unable to transfer or attend. This request must be made within three days of the start of the activity/ practice. The refund check may be mailed or picked up the third Thursday of the month. 4. NO refunds will be given after the third day of theactivity/practice.

Register Early for ProgramsMost programs must meet minimum enrollment in order to be held. If there are not enough registrants, the course will be cancelled! All programs with minimums, registration MUST be received 24 hours prior to the start of the first class. If a class is cancelled due to lack of enrollment, Emporia Recreation Commission’s refund policy will take effect. And don’t forget, you can register online!

Youth Fee Waiver Scholarship Policy The Emporia Recreation Center will follow the guidelines used by USD253 to determine the qualifications for free or reduced price meals. Those who reside in the USD253 school district and are enrolled in Kindergarten through tenth grade, may apply for a fee waiver by contacting the Emporia Recreation Main Office. Those eligible for free lunches will have a $5.00 co-pay per activity those with reduced lunches will pay half of the cost of the activity (unless otherwise noted, i.e. soccer and tackle football). All fee waiver participants are limited to six activities per year (August through July). Your 2014/2015 Food Service Eligibility letter must be shown at time of registration to receive the discount.Eligible Summer programs include: Camp Wilson, baseball, softball, swim lessons, fall soccer and tackle football as noted above.

T.O.P.S.Need a little help to Take Off Pounds Sensibly? Then this is your group. T. O. P. S. meets every Tuesday morning from 9:00-11:00am at the recreation center. Community RoomThe Community Room will accommodate 75 people in any meeting or banquet style. An attached kitchen makes the room convenient to hold reunions, showers and many more activities. The room is available to rent seven days a week and requires a refundable deposit. $25 First Hour !$18 Each Additional Hour$15 Kitchen$68 each hour after 9pm (2 hour minimum, security provided)! !$75 Refundable Deposit

Indoor Swimming PoolOur indoor pool has a capacity of 50 swimmers and ranges from a pool depth of 3’6” to 12’0. Heavy duty, oversized steps located in the shallow end and a handicap lift located on the deck allows any swimmer to ease into the pool. Reserve the pool for a private party on Saturday from 1:00 - 2:00 pm or 5:00 - 6:00 pm and Sunday from 5:00 - 6:00. Private parties allow 25 swimmers to swim and the viewing room to host the party. Contact Control at 340-6393 to reserve your date. $30 One Hour$15 Deposit Guarantees Date & goes towards final payment$0.50 addl. swimmers over 25$14 addl. lifeguard over 25 swimmers

The Emporia Recreation Center offers various rental opportunities. Some rentals require a refundable deposit which is separate from the rental amount and is refunded if rental conditions are fulfilled. Emporia Recreation prohibits the use of alcohol in or on the facility property and the use of tobacco in the Recreation Center. Final Payment is due 2 weeks before rental date. Refundable deposit holds date and time and is due when contract is signed.

GymnasiumThe ERC gymnasium is equipped with one full basketball court or 2 short courts that can be used for volleyball or basketball. Gymnasium rental is based on availability of gym and ERC programs. Fee: $25/Hour

Racquetball CourtsOur building has two racquetball courts you can reserve up to one week in advance by calling our control desk at 340-6393. Our courts are also equipped to use as walleyball courts and can be reserved with your next building rental or big occasion at the rec. 2 Person $3.75 !3 Person $4.25 !4 Person $4.75Punch Card- $35/ 10 punches

Summer Scape will be supervised by qualified leaders 18 years or older with a minimum of ten hours of KDHE approved training and experience working with children. We will maintain a 1 to 15 staff to participant ratio. The program will strive to meet the developmental needs of particular age groups and more importantly, the individual need of each child. The purpose of Summer Scape is to be of service to the child, the parent, and the community by providing an affordable, safe, positive, educational, stimulating and fun experience for every child involved. The program is prepared in advance by the program supervisor and the camp staff. A schedule of specialized activities will be made available each week. This program includes breakfast, lunch, snacks and daily field trips.

- Parents must submit completed paperwork including: Health History Form, notarized Authorization for Emergency Medical Care, Authorization for Dispensing Medications, and Parental Consent Forms for Field Trips prior to the first day.

Camp counselors will cook lunch on Monday and Friday. Parents are asked to bring an evening meal for THEIR FAMILY on Thursday evening and stay for the camp program. Science CampHave you ever wanted to go turtle trapping or hunt for animal tracks? Maybe you would rather do a little snake wrangling or bug catching! These are just some of the exciting activities that ESU Biology faculty will lead your child through in this ESU Biology Camp. This camp will run the week of May 26-29. Activities will include both indoor and outdoor activities. Campers will meet each morning on the 1st floor of the ESU Science Hall and will need to bring a sack lunch Tuesday through Thursday. Lunch will be provided on Friday. The camp will take some off-site trips to the Ross Research Area. All proceeds will help support maintenance of ESU natural areas.Date: May 26-29 Time: 9am to 3pmRegistration Deadline: Friday, May 22

Touch a Truck ~ Saturday, August 1Investigate a police car and sit on the bumper of a fire truck. Find out where rubbish goes when thrown in the back of a garbage truck. These and other trucks will be available for your hands-on inspection. This event is for the kid in all of us. The Emporia Recreation Center is providing the opportunity to see specialty vehicles up close. Each attraction will have an attendant to give tours of the vehicles and answer questions. Please dress appropriately, we will be outside. Parents are required to stay for this event. Afterward, stay and swim! All kids receive a free pass to swim at Jones Aquatic Center that day.

Fishing Derby ~ Friday June 26The Emporia Recreation Center is in search for Emporia’s best little fisherman/woman. Can you prove you have what it takes to catch the biggest fish, or the most fish? We will even have a prize for who can catch the littlest fish! Grab your fishing poles and bait, and join ERC for the 2015 Fishing Derby. The fishing will take place at the Peter Pan Park pond. Fishing will take place from 9:30am to 10:30am. Prizes will be awarded for biggest fish, smallest fish and the most fish. Drinks and snacks will be provided.

Tae Kwon DoBecome Kukiwon-certified and learn traditional Tae Kwon Do from master instructor Don Chounard. Master Don is certified at the "Kukiwon" World TaeKwonDo Federation Seoul, Korea. Our beginner class consists of White, Orange, and Yellow belts. Students will learn various striking techniques with hands and feet, Forms, Korean terminology, and self defense. Tae Kwon Do aims to achieve courtesy, integrity, self control, perseverance, and indomitable spirit. Sign up at the beginning of each month. ArcheryIf you are ten to twelve years old and would like to try a new sport, Archery might be the target for you :) Steve Pletcher, Elementary Physical Education teacher at Riverside Elementary School, a certified NASP (National Archery in the Schools Program) Instructor will be offering eight, one hour sessions in June.  NASP is a program taught all across the United States with standardized cues, fundamentals, and progressions.  Within three to five sessions, most students are starting to feel comfortable with the basics.  This program also provides opportunities for Elementary, Middle, and High School students to shoot (compete) in tournaments across the state. NASP Archery has been proven to be the safest sport in America, and helps students continue to learn patience, focus, reflection, and discipline.Ages: 10-12 yearsDate: Tue/Thurs in June and JulyTime 6:30 to 7:30 pmLocation: Riverside Elementary SchoolFee: $40/monthRegistration Deadline: Friday, May 22Min/Max: 6/8

Growing GreenLet’s learn how to grow things for fun and food! In this class you will play in the dirt while you learn about flowers and vegetables. Summer Fitness ClubAre you a graduate of our Couch to 5K

fun of fitness! We will run/exercise outside when the weather is nice, and at Jones Aquatic

DAY TRIP Kansas City Royals

Join  us  on  Thursday,    July  9  as  we  head  to  Kauffman  Stadium  to  cheer  on  the  KC  

Royals  against  the  Tampa  Bay  Rays.      We  will  sit  in  the  “All  you  Can  Eat  Seats”  and  enjoy  a  great  game  plus  all  the  hot  dogs,  nachos,  peanuts,  pretzels,  and  soda/water  

we  can  eat!    First  pitch  at  1:10!

Rolling Hills Zoo ~ June 10Salina, Kansas

Here you can get face-to-face with a rare white camel, an Indian rhino, a curious

orangutan, an ornery aardvark or many of the other animals of the 100+ species of

wildlife at home in our zoo.You can also journey through the 64,000

square foot museum which takes you around the world to experience the delicate symmetry between humans, animals and nature in seven unique regions from the

arctic to the rainforest.

Geocaching 101Come enjoy an afternoon in the great outdoors! This high-tech treasure hunting game, enjoyed by all ages, is played throughout the world by adventure seekers. The basic idea is to locate hidden

containers (called geocaches) outdoors using GPS devices or smart phones. This program will explain what geocaching is all about and how you can get started. Learn

Track ClubOpen for grades 1-8. This 6 week program is designed for instructional learning and enjoyment of track and field. Our coach is ESU Track athlete, Andrew Etheridge, nine-time All MIAA athlete, seven-time NCAA All American and in 2011 was the 60M Hurdle National runner-up and 110M Hurdle National Champion. Practices will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays at the Emporia Middle School track. A track meet will be held at the end of the season to showcase our athletes. John Cayton, Head Tennis Coach at ESU, will be the instructor again this year. John brings a wealth of tennis background and experience. He is a certified tennis professional by the U.S. Professional Tennis Association (USPTA) at their highest level P1, and has taught tennis for over 20 years. Twelve lessons are scheduled MONDAY thru THURSDAY, with selected FRIDAYS used for make up days due to the weather. SWIM LESSON DESCRIPTIONS

Shrimp/Kippers 6 months – 18 months: Perch 19 months - 36 months:An introduction to the aquatic environment through songs and games, including kicking, breath control, body control and balance. Children will learn to be comfortable in an instructor-led class environment. Meet other parents and learn the basics of safety in and around the pool.

Pike (Preschool 1) 3-5 years: No water experience necessary. Children learn to swim without an adult. Develop confidence and independence in the water. Learn beginner skills including blowing bubbles, flutter kick, alternating arms & back/front floats with support. Flotation devices are used to assist independence. Compares to Polliwog in School-Age.Parents NOT in water.

Eel (Preschool 2) 3-5 years: Children must have completed or demonstrate Pike skills and able to paddle independently approximately 5 ft. without a flotation device and float on back with assistance. Children will improve front paddle, back float with paddle and a kick, and paddle on side. Strokes will be performed for 15 ft. without assistance. Compares to Polliwog in School-Age. Parents NOT in water.

Ray (Preschool 3) 3-5 years: Must have completed or demonstrate Eel skills and be able to paddle independently 15 ft. Learn front crawl stroke with rhythmic breathing and back crawl. Participants will also be introduced to components of other strokes. Children will also learn the basics of treading water and diving. Compares to Guppy in School-Age. Parents NOT in water.

Polliwog (School-Age Level 1) 6-12 years: Intro level for beginner swimmers. Learn beginner skills including flutter kick, front crawl, back float with flutter kick, and paddle on the side with flutter kick. Develop skills to swim independently. 

Guppy (School-Age Level 2) 6-12 years: Must have completed or demonstrate Polliwog level skills & be able to swim 20 feet. Learn to perform the front crawl with rhythmic breathing, backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke, and elementary backstroke for 25 yds. Begin diving and treading water.

Minnow (School-Age Level 3) 6-12 years: Must have completed or demonstrate Guppy level skills. Strengthen crawl stroke with rotary breathing, back crawl, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, and sidestroke. Learn effective kicks while treading and more advanced diving skills.

Fish (School-Age Level 4) 6-12 years: Must show proficiency in Minnow skills. Children will learn to perform all strokes (the crawl stroke, breaststroke, elementary breaststroke, backstroke, and sidestroke) 50 yds of the pool with efficient breathing and turns. In addition, the butterfly stroke will be introduced.

Flying Fish (School-Age Level 5) 6-12 years: Will learn to proficiently perform all swim strokes for 100 yds and tread water for 6 minutes with 4 different kicks.

Private lessons: Private lessons are available for participants 3 years to adult and are great for those who benefit from one on one instruction or participants with special needs. Private lessons are only taught by certified swim instructors with experience. You must fill out a request form when registering for private lessons. 4 – 30 minute lessons: $40 8 – 30 minute lessons: $80

First look and see where your child fits based on their age. Then look at the skill descriptions to see where your child fits best based on current ability. Some levels are combined based on similar skills. If the classes are large, they will be split into smaller groups. Call Melinda if unsure of where to put your child or if they were in a previous class and you

are unaware of which level is appropriate.*3-5 years: (must be within these ages) Parents NOT in water

Not able to put their face in, has never had lessons before, cannot push off the wall and stay in a horizontal position, not confident in the water: Pike

Can put their face in confidently, stay in a horizontal position pushing off the wall for a small amount of time, comfortable but not able to swim independently: Eel

Can push off the wall and swim with their face in, can back float and front float somewhat independently, can alternate legs and arms while swimming on front and back, very independent in the water: Ray

Seals Kids Club

Adaptive swim lessons for children with special physical or emotional needs to teach the basics of water safety and swimming. During 2009, 2010, and 2011, accidental drowning accounted for 91% total U.S. deaths reported in children with an ASD ages 14 and younger subsequent to wandering/elopement.* Our program is designed so that qualifying children can have 4 lessons individually or in small groups with a trained swim instructor.

ERC Indoor Pool Rules★ Children must be 7 years or older to use the pool without an

adult ★Unsupervised Child Form must be filled out by parent/

guardian with valid ID for all children 7-15 yrs. who wish to use our pool without adult supervision

★ Food and drink are not permitted in the pool area★ No running on pool deck or in locker rooms★ All valuables should be LOCKED in a locker★ All participants 5 years and older must use appropriate

locker rooms for their gender★ All children under the age of 10 must pass a swim test to use

deep end and diving board★ Diving is only permitted in the deep end★ Cutaways, inwards, and other jumps deemed unsafe by

Aquatics staff are not permitted★ All children in a flotation device must be within arm’s reach

of an adult at all times (or non-swimmers)★ ERC does provide lifejackets for use★ Non-toilet trained children must wear swim diapers,

disposable diapers are not permitted★ Once swimmers leave the pool area, they will be required to

pay for re-entry★ Children must be supervised in locker rooms at all time★No flotation devices in deep end★Diving area must be clear before using diving board

Jones Aquatic Center Pool Rules★ All children under 8 years of age must be accompanied by

someone 16 years of age or older at all times in the facility★ All children in flotation devices must be within arm’s reach of

an adult at all times (or non-swimmers)★ Children in flotation devices are not permitted in the diving

area or the slides ★ Height requirement for the yellow JAC slide is 48” .★ Height requirement for the blue slide is 42” tall. Patrons

under 42” tall may ride the blue slide with a guardian 16 years of age or older

★ Metallic items (buttons, zipper, rivets, etc.), jewelry (necklaces, bracelets, rings, wedding bands, etc.), sunglasses, goggles, and accessories of any kind are not permitted on the slides

★ Everyone must enter and ride slides feet first on their backs and maintain proper body position the entire time

★ Stopping in the middle of the slide is prohibited★Everybody in the lazy river must remain in a tube at all times,

unless accompanying small riders★ All youth under the age of 10 must take a swim test

administered by available JAC staff to use the diving area/deep end (must swim 25 yds. and tread w/o goggles for 30 seconds)

★Youth who pass the swim test will receive a green neckband to use for the season. Replacement fee for lost neckbands is $2.00. These bands are for pool id only.

★Do not pull on neckbands of swimmers★Do not trade bands with other swimmers★ One diver on diving board or steps at a time★ Inward/Cutaway dives and any other dives deemed unsafe

by the Aquatics staff are not permitted★ Dive straight- diving to either side of the diving board is not

permitted★ Goggles, jewelry, toys or restrictive devices that could cause

injury are not permitted in diving area★ Horseplay on tubes, gator, equipment is prohibited★Hanging on basketball rims or ropes is prohibited★ Dunking, riding on shoulders, and “tossing” other patrons is

prohibited★ Outside food and drinks are strictly prohibited★ All food and drink must be kept in the concession area for

sanitary reasons★ JAC is a tobacco/alcohol/drug free facility★ Running is strictly prohibited in all areas of the facility★ Please consider appropriate swim attire for the family

environment at the JAC★ Only swim attire can be worn in the pool, on the slides, and

in the lazy river (no cut-off khakis or jeans, sport bras, etc).★ Children who passed swim test last year will be issued

Private PartiesJones Aquatic Center is available to the public after hours for private parties. The outdoor pool and slides can be rented out for birthdays, family reunions, or scout group events. For more information before the season call Emporia Recreation 620-340-6300 or Jones Aquatic Center during the season 620-340-6400.

Aqua Zumba: Known as the Zumba “pool party”, Aqua Zumba gives new meaning to the idea of an invigorating workout. Splashing, stretching, twisting, even shouting, laughing, hooting and hollering are often heard during an Aqua Zumba class. Integrating the Zumba formula and philosophy with traditional aqua fitness disciplines, Aqua Zumba blends it all together into a safe, challenging, water-based workout that is cardio-conditioning, body-toning, and most of all, exhilarating beyond belief. Instructor: Kerri Zorn Daily Drop-in: $3.00 Level 2-3

Aqua Fit: This class is designed for a variety of levels. Use the water to increase or decrease the intensity of your workout. Our instructors will take you through a variety of formats to challenge your body at your own pace. Seasoned athletes can benefit from these classes as well as those wishing to add variety to their current routine. Some formats we use include: deep cardio conditioning, Tabata, circuit training, and intervals. Not comfortable in deep water? No problem, the instructors can show modifications for those wishing to stay in the shallow area. We use equipment to help add support and resistance to the class as well. Joints in Motion: This 45 minute class combines those stretching and flexibility exercises from our Arthritis Foundation program and combines them with some of our light to moderate cardiovascular exercises. This class is ideal for those who have participated in the Arthritis Foundation program but are looking to perform more cardio exercises in their routine and those recovering from injury or illness looking to participate in a physical fitness program. Instructor: Rotates Daily Drop-in: $3.00 Level 1-2Silver Dolphins: Join us for social time in the pool which includes a light 30 minute workout for active older adults! We incorporate low impact cardiovascular and resistance exercises into this program. If you like meeting new people, conversation, and exercise, this is the class for you!! Summer ScapeThe purpose of Summer Scape is to be of service to the child, the parent, and the community by providing an affordable, safe, positive, educational, stimulating and fun licensed daycare. The program is prepared in advance by the program supervisor and the camp staff. A schedule of specialized activities will be made available each week.
