Weekly sessions June 19–30 and July 10–August 25

Discover how the zoo keeps animals healthy through play with a purpose. Learn about enrichment at the zoo and try your hand at making toys for animals. Explore why it’s important for all animals (including humans) to play. Go on an adventure around the zoo to find the toys and treats the animals love, and watch the elephants stomp and search for their treats and toys.

Feathers, Fur and ScalesMonday through Friday 8:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m.

Weekly sessions June 19–30 and July 10–August 25

Take a close look at feathers, fur and scales during a half-day at the zoo and a half-day at Portland Children’s Museum. Feel different critter coverings and discover how feathers, fur and scales help animals live. Meet a special animal guest each day and be inspired to create your own touch-and-feel book.

A deep dive into the different ways animals move and why. Each day, investigate animal movement through interactive play, animal experiences and art. Discover how some snakes can climb trees (with no hands!) and what is up (or down) with penguins flying underwater. Sneak a peek as keepers give treats to some of your favorite animals.

Weekly sessions July 31–August 25

Discover the secrets behind animals’ colors and patterns. Develop your observation skills by looking at animals from top to bottom. Investigate how animals’ body shapes and colors help them survive, from long necks on giraffes to torpedo-shaped harbor seals. Find out why it’s helpful for some animals to have bright colors and some to be hidden from sight.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it: become a superhero for wildlife! Explore how your actions can make a big impact in protecting animals from danger. Find inspiration from animals around the zoo to create stories and art of your own. Animals take life to the extreme, from sub-zero habitats to thousand-mile migrations. Explore animals’ extreme survival strategies, learn about remarkable animal bodies and uncover the reasons behind their behavior. Go behind the scenes and learn how we care for animals from extreme environments. See primates use their remarkable skills as they forage for food.

Weekly sessions July 31–August 25

Become a science explorer as you inspect unusual plants and discover their unexpected parallels to the animal kingdom. Use microscopes to get an extra-close look at the tiny structures that make these organisms unique. Tour behind the scenes in the zoo’s greenhouse and meet an expert from the Forest Service. Find out which plants are used for animal enrichment and watch the elephants receive their enrichment.

From dripping rainforests to golden grasslands, the habitats of the world have unique characteristics that are important to the animals living there. Explore habitats ranging from the African savanna to the deep blue ocean to discover how different animals survive in the place they call home. Go behind the scenes at the western pond turtle lab and take a hike in Washington Park to spot animals in the wild.

Wildlife Careers Monday through Wednesday 8:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m.

Investigate animal-related careers at the zoo with guest speakers from Banfield Pet Academy, the Forest Service and US Fish and Wildlife. Take a field trip to Oxbow Park, go behind the-scenes at the zoo’s Veterinary Medical Center and tour the zoo’s horticulture department to learn how they grow food for the animals. Sleep over on Thursday night in Steller Cove right next to the harbor seal exhibit.

Weekly sessions July 31–August 25

Step into the role of a wildlife detective to solve a conservation mystery. Use technology and skills gained throughout the week to piece together the clues. Collect evidence on a field trip to Smith and Bybee Lakes, and interview experts during a special presentation about California condor conservation. Visit multiple behind-the-scenes areas, and spend Thursday night next to the polar bears.

Eco Exploration Monday through Wednesday, Friday 8:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m.

Investigate ecosystem roles and how animals compete for resources. Discover ecosystems inside and outside the zoo. Get a backstage pass to meet the animal stars of Wildlife Live, and look on as the keepers give the black bears special treats. Stay after hours on Thursday to visit the nocturnal animals of the zoo when you play a night hunt game.

Many animal species have made it back from the brink of extinction, and this camp is all about their stories. Tour labs behind the scenes where butterflies and turtles are raised for release. Take conservation into your own hands with a habitat restoration project, and play a zoo-wide challenge game after closing on Thursday.

From insects to actions, small things matter. Explore the new Education Center and go behind the scenes in our state-of-the-art conservation lab. Discover ways you can make a difference for local wildlife and learn how the zoo and many others are helping animals here and around the world.

Explore ScienceAugust 29

Discover a hidden world! Build your science skills using equipment such as microscopes, thermal imaging devices and soil testing kits. Then, re-imagine your findings through art. Develop your powers of observation while watching special orangutan enrichment and learn how science helps improve animals’ lives.

Are you interested in camp, but not sure you’re ready to dive in? Discovery Days at the zoo offer a chance for campers to dip their toes in the water with day-by-day signup. Try it out!

Wild Discoveries July 5 or August 30

Explore the zoo’s animals, from small insects to huge elephants. Get free and fierce in our new nature play area and search for hidden nooks in the zoo. Go behind the scenes in our greenhouse and discover which plants are our animals’ favorite foods.

Conservation ChampionsJuly 6 or August 31

Learn how to create a better future for wildlife. Explore all the ways the zoo helps animals, from condors to giraffes. Enjoy a special guest presentation from an animal expert, and go behind-the-scenes at the zoo’s butterfly lab.

Creature KeepersJuly 7 or September 1

Meet a keeper and learn how they care for the zoo’s animals. Watch elephants receive their enrichment, and find out how what’s learned from animals at the zoo helps elephants in the wild. Find out what it takes to feed the zoo’s animals during a behind-the-scenes tour at the animal nutrition center.

Animals—including humans—perceive the world in vastly different ways because of their complex senses. Delve into the science behind animal senses and practice using scientific equipment to observe and investigate. Learn about the unique anatomy of insects at the butterfly lab and discover the complexities of echolocation. Enjoy a mid-week field trip to Sauvie Island, and get ready to sleep at the lion exhibit on Thursday night.

Animal-Inspired InventionsMonday through Wednesday 8:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m.

Plants and animals have inspired many human innovations. Hone your observation and investigation skills using technology while learning about biomimicry, and choose a real-world problem to tackle using your new knowledge. Take a behind-the-scenes tour of the zoo’s greenhouse and a trip to Portland State University to learn about the ways animals are solving human issues. Spend Thursday night at the zoo to explore the zoo’s new education center and observe condors and crocodiles.

MedicationMedication cannot be administered or dispensed by staff. Campers must be able to take their own medication. However, staff can carry medications and help children remember to take them. Lead camp staff and the zoo’s full time security staff are EpiPen trained.

AllergiesThe Oregon Zoo cannot guarantee allergen free food. If your child has any food allergies, please pack your own snacks and lunches. Lead camp staff and the zoo’s full-time security staff are EpiPen trained.

Special needsPlease detail any physical, academic or social special needs your child has that our staff should be made aware of. Special needs will be accommodated to the best of our ability provided we know in advance of your camp week. If your child is not self-sufficient, you will be asked to provide a non-parent aide for the week of camp.

HOW TO REGISTERRegister online at oregonzoo.org/campThe zoo offers two week-long options for each grade level. Select one or both to enroll your camper. Campers may enroll in multiple Discovery Days.

Registration for all camps will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis. The website will indicate in real time how many spaces are available in each camp and you will receive immediate email confirmation of your registration.

Full payment is required. The zoo accepts Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discover cards. Checks made payable to Oregon Zoo are accepted only with mailed or hand-delivered registrations.

Tuition Assistance Thanks to the JFR Foundation and their funders, some need-based tuition assistance is available. To receive an application, please call 503-220-2781. Online registration is not available for families seeking tuition assistance. Families are responsible for transportation to and from the zoo.

RefundsRefunds, minus a 10% administrative fee, will be made only if your cancellation is received before June 5, 2017. After June 5, 75% refunds will be given if cancellation is made at least five working days before the start of the camp session. No partial refunds will be given for missed camp days.

Waiting lists are compiled for all full camps. Please call 503-220-2781 to be placed on a waitlist.

Weekly camps include educator-led tours of the entire zoo, t-shirts and customizable journals.

Our staff is screened for excellence in programming for children. All staff working with children, including substitute counselors, have successfully passed the Oregon Child Care Registry’s criminal background check.

Counselor to student ratios are 1 to 6 for kindergarten and younger, 1 to 8 for first and second grade, 1 to 10 for third through eighth grade. At no time is any child left unsupervised.

LunchMenus change daily; vegetarian options are included, but we are unable to accommodate other dietary restrictions. All meals include a choice of water or juice, fruit, carrot sticks and a dessert. Sample entrée items: hot dogs, corndogs, pizza, chicken nuggets.

Lunch is not available for half-day camps (children 4 years through entering kindergarten).

Early and late careChildren are supervised in a classroom with a variety of animal-themed, free-choice learning activities. Pre-registration is required.

SafetyZoo security staff are first aid, CPR and automatic emergency defibrillator (AED) trained. All camp staff are trained to respond to emergency situations. Lead camp staff are first aid trained.

When registering, parents are asked to list the names of authorized transporters. Everyone picking up a child from camp will be required to present photo ID that matches a name on that list.

Parental involvementOur camp program is designed for children who are able to be successful in group-oriented programs without parent involvement.
