Spanish Language Immersion

Will my child be able to make the leap to school,

let alone the leap to learning in another language?

Kindergarten is a big step for most five and six-

year-olds and the challenge of constant exposure to

a new language is an understandable concern. This

concern persists throughout the first-grade year.

How can we become involved in our child's

schooling when we don't understand the language?

Many parents perceive volunteering in the

classroom as a challenge.

*Transfer of skills-only learn how to read once

*Time needed to acquire academic level-research

*shows language takes 7-9 years to acquire.

*Grades at times will be average or low

*Staff and Administration closely monitor student

progress and meet on data every six weeks

* If a concern arises, then parent, teacher and

administration will conference

*PK and K are all about learning routines

*First couple of months is for community

building and learning of procedures


*

*School begins at 7:40 a.m. and ends at 3:20 p.m.

*Your child needs to be in the classroom by 7:50 a.m.

*Pick-up begins at 3:20 p.m.

*PK students need to be picked up in the cafeteria- parents/guardians need to provide ID and sign the child out.

*Must be on approved list to release student

*Make arrangements ahead of time

*Kindergarten dismisses from the south parking lot

*Older siblings will join younger siblings


*

*Meals are free for all students.

*Breakfast is eaten in the classrooms

*Lunch may be brought from home

*PK and K get an afternoon snack

*Food allergies

*Please document with school nurse

*Prescribed medications


*

*Your student needs to be in school everyday

*When your child is sick we ask you call the

office

*Absences with a doctor’s note will be excused

*Before school starts:

*Help Your Child Develop Motor Skills

*Read To Your Child Every Day

*Check Out Meal Choices For Your Child

*See If Your Child Can Visit the Classroom

*Practice the Routine Before The First Day

Ask about his/her favorite part of the day

What song did you enjoy the most?

What are the names of some of the other children?

Who are you sitting with at your table?

o Ensure your child gets a good night sleep each night. Learning in a second language is a lot of work!

*We will be meeting Aug. 18th from 5:30-6:30

p.m.

Your child will visit the

classroom but the teacher

will not be speaking

English!

PK and Kindergarten are a big step, Immersion is a

greater step. Show how proud you are as a parent.

Be confident: be there for your child when they

express frustration but be confident that

everything will work out

Immersion is a journey. Children learn at their own

pace.

*Listen to your child read-students will bring books from school

*Talk to your child as you visit the grocery store, zoo, museum, etc.

*Use your most proficient language with your child- child needs rich language input
