2016 SUMMER SESSIONSPRE-K PROGRAMS (Birth to 5)

WHERE CHILDREN LEARN,GROW AND THRIVE.At the Y, we regard each child as a uniqueindividual who needs to be understood, guided,encouraged and appreciated. At this early age,play is a child's most important form of learningand development. We provide programs andactivities where children learn, explore, developathletic skills, build a positive self-image anddevelop social relationships with other children.

Ensure your children are kindergarten-ready.Enroll them in a YMCA pre-K program today.

PARENT/CHILD SWIM LESSONS(AGES 6 MONTHS TO 3 YEARS)Our parent/child swim lessons promote water enrichment and aquatic-readiness activities for children and their parents or other trusted adults. Inthis program, the developmental experiences of each child are used to buildthe child's self-confidence in and out of the water. Parents learn from theinstructor's example how to guide their children through positive reinforce-ment and appropriate praise.

There are four levels based on developmental abilities:

• Shrimp (6-8 months) Child can control their head and sit with supportfrom the hands.

• Kipper (9-12 months) Child can sit without hand support and stand withsupport from the hands.

• Inia (13-18 months) Child can stand without support and walk with orwithout support or aid.

• Perch (19-36 months) Child can run and jump.

Instructors are certified in the YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor Program.

Level 1: Pike With Parent Children are taught basic skills that are thebuilding blocks of swimming, including water propulsion, floating, bodyawareness and independence. They are also taught general aquatic safetyand pool games. Children will be taught with and without the use of variousinstructional flotation devices (IFDs). Classes maybe combined based onenrollment. Is your child just not ready to be alone for swim lessons? This isa transitional class where we wean your child away from Mom and Dad. Yourchild must be at least 3 years old at the start of the session. The next levelfrom here would be Pike.

Level 1: Pike (Ages 3-5) The first level is for beginning swimmers.Swimmers should be able to listen to instructions and follow directions.Swimmers will learn the basic paddle stroke on the front, back and sides.They will also learn kicking skills and grow comfortable with putting theirface in the water.

Level 2: Eel (Ages 3-5) Swimmers will learn to jump into the water withoutassistance and float on their front and back for 20 seconds with or withoutan IFD. Swimmers will also learn to paddle on front, back and sides for 25yards with an IFD and 15 feet without.

Level 3: Ray (Ages 3-5) Swimmers will learn to front and back float for 30seconds without an IFD; front alternating paddle with rhythmic breathingfor 25 yards with an IFD, and for 20 feet without. Swimmers will also learnfront symmetrical paddle with rhythmic breathing for 25 yards with an IFD,and for 20 feet without; do a side alternating paddle for 25 yards with anIFD and for 20 feet without; back alternating paddle for 25 yards with anIFD and for 20 feet without; and back symmetrical paddle for 25 yards withan IFD and for 20 feet without. Prerequisites: To enter this level, swimmersshould be able to jump in the water without assistance and float on theirfront and back for 20 seconds with or without an IFD. Swimmers should alsobe able to paddle on front, back and sides for 25 yards with an IFD and for15 feet without.

Level 4: Starfish In this class swimmers will learn to do a standing dive,basic front crawl with rotary breathing for 25 yards, basic breaststroke for25 yards, backstroke for 25 yards, elementary backstroke for 25 yards,basic sidestroke for 25 yards and tread water for 1 minute. Prerequisites:To enter this level, swimmers should be able to front and back float for 30seconds without an IFD, front alternating paddle with rhythmic breathingfor 25 yards with an IFD and for 20 feet without. Swimmers also need to beable to front symmetrical paddle with rhythmic breathing for 25 yards withan IFD and for 20 feet without, do a side alternating paddle for 25 yardswith an IFD and for 20 feet without, back alternating paddle for 25 yardswith an IFD and for 20 feet without, and back symmetrical paddle for 25yards with an IFD and for 20 feet without.

MARTIAL ARTSThe progressive martial arts program is designed to encourage yourchild to have fun while teaching skills and building self-esteem, respectand discipline.

Little Ninjas Give your child a head start by enrolling in this class whereparticipants learn basic martial arts skills, develop coordination and balance.

Novice Karate This class is for the continuing karate student with someexperience under their belt. Students will further their mastery of Shotokankarate kihon and katas.

GYMNASTICSYMCA gymnastics classes are designed to give a full workout whileimproving flexibility, coordination, balance and strength. We also work onlistening skills, following directions and social skills. Children use all of thegymnastics equipment at every level and receive exceptional instructionfrom well-trained instructors.

The YMCA's before and after school programs are more than just child care.They're enrichment programs designed to meet the developmental needsof children with an emphasis on experiential learning, social and emotionaldevelopment and the promotion of healthy living, all while providing a fun,safe and nurturing environment for children. Before School, K-8 The Leaning Tower YMCA (LTY) School Age Child Careprograms partner with several Chicago Public Schools for the2016-17 school year. The Before School Program is in partnership withthe schools listed below and are held at the Leaning Tower YMCA. Childrenare supervised and engaged in activities beginning at 7 a.m. for the BeforeSchool Program. The School Age Child Care programs require participants toattend a minimum of 3 days a week. The selected days must be consistentwithin the given month. Parents may change the selected days if LTY isnotified by the 10th of the prior month and space is available. (Example:LTY needs to be notified by March 10 if a parent would like to change theirchild's program days for April). Child care rates will be drafted from yourcredit card each month beginning on September 1, 2016 and ending on May1, 2017. At LTY, program participants engage in arts and crafts, scienceand math activities, play games and sports during gym time and play inour outdoor playground, field and track when weather permits. Homeworkassistance is available; however, we do not offer tutoring services or one-on-one assistance.

After School, K-8 The Leaning Tower YMCA (LTY) School Age Child CarePrograms partner with several Chicago Public Schools for the 2016-2017school year. Children are supervisedand engaged in activities until 6 p.m. for the After School Program. TheSchool Age Child Care programs require participants to attend a minimumof 3 days a week. YOUTH SPORTSThe Y is the starting point for many youth to learn about becomingactive and developing healthy habits they will continue throughout theirlives. In a Y sports program, your child will meet friends, learn new skills,improve his or her fitness and most importantly have fun! Whether it'sgaining the confidence that comes with learning a new sport, building thepositive relationships that lead to good sportsmanship and teamwork, orrefining and improving skills, participating in sports at the Y is about building the whole athlete, inside and out. Please contact the Sports Directorfor more information.

Beginner Gymnastics Participants will be educated on gymnasticssafety and introduced to all Olympic apparatus. They will learncoordination, flexibility, proper form and tumbling techniques to improvetheir gymnastics skills.

Intermediate Gymnastics Instructors will focus on building skills, safetyand confidence. Gymnasts will develop strength and flexibility that willcorrelate with the skills and techniques they are working on in class.

Advanced Gymnastics Participants must be evaluated by the head coachprior to taking this class. Instructors will provide positive coaching, directand indirect instruction and fundamentals for USAG level 4 training. Theywill coach proper form and posture techniques, encourage and motivate thegymnasts to be successful.

Pre-Team Gymnastics Instructors will concentrate on posture, form,strength and flexibility throughout classes. Gymnasts will be trained forcompetition at USAG level 3, learn dance routines, jump connections andhigher tumbling skill progressions on all Olympic apparatus.

MARTIAL ARTSThe progressive martial arts program is designed to encourage yourchild to have fun while teaching skills and building self-esteem, respectand discipline.

Level 1: Polliwog This is the beginning level for school age children and isappropriate for anyone new to the water or with little formal instruction.Children will learn kicking skills, the basic paddle stroke on their front, backand sides, and will become comfortable putting their face in the water.

Level 2: Guppy In the Guppy class, swimmers will learn to front andback float for 1 minute; front alternating paddle 25 yards with rhythmicbreathing, with and without an IFD; front symmetrical paddle 25 yards;back symmetrical paddle 25 yards; back alternating paddle 25 yards; sidealternating paddle 25 yards; and kneeling dive. Prerequisites: To enter thislevel, children should be able to front and back float for 30 seconds with orwithout an IFD; paddle 25 yards on their front, back and side with an IFDand 15 feet without an IFD; jump in without assistance; and be comfortablein deep water.

Level 3: Minnow In the Minnow class, swimmers will learn to do a standingdive; basic front crawl rotary breathing 25 yards; basic breaststroke25 yards; backstroke 25 yards; elementary backstroke 25 yards; basicsidestroke 25 yards; and tread water for 1 minute. Prerequisites: To enterthis level, children should be able to front and back float for 1 minute; frontalternating paddle 25 yards with rhythmic breathing, with and without anIFD; front symmetrical paddle 25 yards; back symmetrical paddle 25 yards;back alternating paddle 25 yards; side alternating paddle 25 yards; andkneeling dive.

Level 7: Porpoise The Porpoise level differs from other levels in that theformat allows older children and teens the opportunity to develop a programthat fits their interests after they complete the Shark Level. Participants willexpand upon the five main points of YMCA swim lessons while they learnleadership skills and the value of community service.

Fluid Running Fluid Running is a deep-water running class that provides allthe benefits of running on land and more without any impact. The benefitsinclude burning up to 40% more calories than running on land. Buildsmuscular strength and endurance by working legs, core and arms. Thereis zero impact, so runners can participate even with many injuries. Youdon't have to be a runner or an athlete to participate. Floatation belts areprovided. Want to try a class?
