A Message for Lifelong LearnersDear Friends –As The Learning Center embarks on its annual summer season of dual multi-week sessions, we remember one of our own – both a participant and a lecturer – whom we lost March 2, 2016…the final day of the winter term.Andy Vaught, native New Yorker and retiree to Savannah some twenty years ago, found a home at The Learning Center. And in our midst he reawakened his impressive skills as a lifelong educator, nourishing his many friends with exquisite courses and lectures on an enormous array of subjects in the American literary canon and on the history, landmarks, and culture of his beloved New York City. Programs in either of these categories, meticulously planned and expertly executed by Andy Vaught, became occasions for big crowds to absorb Andy’s copious infor-mation and enjoy his intelligent insights and analysis. Most of all, these were times when Andy’s winning personality, his gentlemanly demeanor, his clever sense of humor, and his love of his subjects were on full display. All were utterly contagious. The Learning Center is not likely to see the match of Andy Vaught any time soon. We are left to mourn his loss but more importantly to luxuriate in the legacy of the educational experiences he gave to so many.Present at the birth of The Learning Center’s extremely successful Friday film series, Andy was a champion of cinematic programming at TLC. His knowledge of motion pictures was encyclopedic, and he worked with Keller Jones to deter-mine memorable themes and attractive film categories that ultimately resulted in winning courses. In loving memory of Andy, The Learning Center announces a three-week film series in June featuring Andy’s favorite actor, Gene Tierney. Predictably, it was she who starred in Andy’s favorite film: Laura. We believe that this course is a fitting farewell to one of TLC’s greats; we hope you will agree.

Sincerely,

Patti Lyons Roger SmithSCI President TLC Director

Wednesday Three-Week Courses | SAGE lunches on Wednesdays $6

The Fallen Women of Victorian ArtInstructor: Gabriela Jasin9:15 – 10:15am June 15, 22, and 29Program fee: $20 for members; $40 for visitorsIn Victorian visual culture, a woman falls by rejecting or losing the men in her life. Lacking male supervision, a woman poten-tially transgresses the domestic boundaries of her natural position. Rossetti, Hunt, Millais, and other Pre-Raphaelites painters feature downtrodden pros-titutes either saved by a passing hero or left for dead. The “fallen woman” theme can also include idealized women: the Lady of Shalott and Hamlet’s Ophelia are but two subjects of Victorian artists. What does the Victorian fascination with unconventional women say about an era already preoccupied with puritanical sensi-bilities? This course offers the answers.Gabriela Jasin is a professor of art history at the Savannah College of Art and Design, where she has taught at both the Atlanta and Savannah campuses. Her Ph.D. in art history is from Rutgers University.

Fundamental FacebookInstructor: Debbie Hornsby9:15 – 10:15am June 15, 22, and 29

Program fee: $20 for members; $40 for visitorsFacebook is a now household word: so much so that not “being on” Facebook potentially relegates one to being out of the loop, not in the know, and generally left out of information and opportunities. This course enables first-timers and tech veterans alike to become more familiar and comfortable with the possibilities of Facebook for keeping in touch with current and long-time friends and staying abreast of news and events, not to mention sharing one’s own life with the world. Lectures and demonstrations reveal all that Facebook can do, and “assignments” between class meetings allow for individual practice.Debbie Hornsby is assistant director of The Learning Center and handles all of TLC’s IT functions. She previously served as technical director for a printing company, and has worked with Mac and Apple products for over 20 years.

comes from his biographer Einhard, a scholar at the Carolingian court who knew the great man “up close and personal.” This course examines the work of both men and considers the ways in which a biographer shapes an interpretation and a memory. Suggested text for this course: The Life of Charlemagne by Einhard (any edition, print or electronic)Janet Stone earned her Ph.D. in history at Emory University and served as a professor of history at Armstrong State University for more than thirty years. In her retirement, she lectures frequently at The Learning Center.

The Stories of englishInstructor: Richard Nordquist1:30 – 2:30pm June 15, 22, and 29Program fee: $20 for members; $40 for visitorsOver the past 1,500 years, English has evolved from a language spoken by a few thousand Anglo-Saxons on an island far from the center of the civilized world to one that’s used by a quarter of the human race. This course considers some of the stories of English words, sounds, and syntax – stories that illustrate how the language has been suppressed, transported, diversified, standardized, politicized, and enormously expanded.Richard Nordquist was a professor of English for nearly thirty years at Armstrong State University, where he directed The Writing Center and ASU’s outreach program to non-traditional students. In retirement, he works on the internet’s About.com question site where he is one of the most sought-after gurus of writing and grammar.

The Scandalous Bible: Stories you Didn’t Learn in Sunday SchoolInstructor: Melinda Stein10:30 – 11:30am June 15, 22, and 29Program fee: $20 for members; $40 for visitorsNarratives from the Bible – both very familiar and relatively unknown – popu-late this course on stories no Sunday School teacher would ever include in her lesson. Melinda Stein quotes chapter and verse, recounting tales that both fascinate and horrify. Lies and decep-tion; murder and mayhem; rape, incest, and even ménages-à-trois – all of these elements come vividly to life from the pages of the Good Book.

Educated at Brooklyn College, Melinda Stein has taught at all age levels. She speaks and writes extensively on subjects related to Judaism and other world religions, the state of Israel, and the Bible as literature.

Charlemagne, up Close and PersonalInstructor: Janet Stone10:30 – 11:30am June 15, 22, and 29Program fee: $20 for members; $40 for visitorsHis name is one that is learned early and remembered long: Charles the Great, Carolus Magnus, Charlemagne. He was a Frank, a Christian, and a Roman Emperor. Both France and Germany claim him. In some ways, he marks the beginning of Europe. Much of our knowledge about Charlemagne

We Are not Alone: A Look at evidence for Alien VisitationInstructor: Sally Rountree Klein1:30 – 2:30pm June 15, 22, and 29Program fee: $20 for members; $40 for visitorsBright objects in the heavens that gleam brighter than all the stars, then disap-pear into the night sky. Ancient artifacts that depict astronauts. Literary refer-ences to gods from the sky. Voluminous artistic depictions recognizable only from aerial altitudes. What do history, science, literature, and the arts say about visits to earth by aliens? Participants draw their own conclusions after considering the fascinating evidence revealed in this course that examines the possibility that we are, perhaps, not alone. Sally Klein holds undergraduate and grad-uate degrees in education. She is a veteran teacher of science, business, and English, and served as a high school principal and later Dean of Allied Health and Business Services at Savannah Technical College.

Geopolitical History of the Middle eastInstructor: H. Emerson Thomas3:00 – 4:15pm June 15, 22, and 29Program fee: $20 for members; $40 for visitorsDespite its rich cultural heritage as a land of many empires, its status as a center of commerce connecting east and west, its claim to three major religions, and more recently its importance to the world’s supply of energy, the Middle East remains an enigma. Today this region is mired in internal conflict that

often spills over to affect world politics. This course examines the impact of early civilizations, competing empires, dramatic religious evolutions, and – by virtue of colonialism in the early twentieth century – the often arbitrary division of the region on current geopo-litical conditions in the Middle East.H. Emerson (Tom) Thomas, Jr. is a retired cardiologist and former professor of medicine at Boston University School of Medicine. His interest in the geopolitical history of the Middle East stems from his interest in history as a predictor of current affairs.

The etudes of ChopinInstructor: Benjamin Warsaw3:00 – 4:15pm June 15, 22, and 29Program fee: $20 for members; $40 for visitorsFrederic Chopin surpassed the precedent model of the étude and achieved a new level of genius: a study that was both musical and technical. This course affords participants the opportunity to study and hear Chopin’s twenty-four études – each one a masterpiece – in a rare lecture/recital format. Each class highlights eight etudes, examining them from musical, formulaic, and technical perspectives. This is a rare opportunity to hear all twenty-four études!Benjamin Warsaw is a professor of music and chairs the piano department at Armstrong State University. As a solo performer, teacher, chamber musician, and composer, he has performed numerous concerts in North America and Europe. Last year he released his debut recording, Warsaw Plays Warsaw, featuring a cycle of 24 preludes for piano.

“To Me or not To Me”: Ayn Rand and the Renewed Interest in Self-InterestInstructor: Melinda Stein9:15 – 10:15am July 20 through August 24Program fee: $40 for members; $80 for visitorsIs altruism man’s highest calling, or does the human community fare better when each member sees to his own needs? Is sharing the wealth the pinnacle of societal evolution, or is a free market the surest system of bettering mankind? Objectivism is the term Ayn Rand gave to her philosophy of capitalism, and other voices join hers in the essays for this course. Selections from Capitalism: The Unknown Ideal generate class discussions ranging from the morality of socialism to the virtue of capitalism, and from the politics of Sanders-style collectivism and the singu-larity of Donald Trump.Text for this course:Capitalism: The Unknown Ideal by Ayn Rand, Nathaniel Branden, Alan Greenspan, and Robert Hessen (ISBN: 9780451147950)Melinda Stein is a New York native who was educated at Brooklyn College. She has taught at nearly every grade level, and her subjects at The Learning Center have included Zionism and the state of Israel, the Bible as literature, and the history of world religions.

Celts and Vikings: exploring early British ArtInstructor: Betsy Dominguez9:15 – 10:15am July 20 through August 24Program fee: $40 for members; $80 for visitorsThis course investigates the historical and cultural underpin-

nings of British art and architecture from prehistory through the Battle of Hastings. Commencing with Stonehenge and the pagan ritual landscape and moving to the Celts and Roman Britain, the focus later shifts to the effects of monasticism and the Christianization of Britain through examination of Hiberno-Saxon manuscripts and decorative objects. Ultimately, art and architectural developments of the ninth and tenth centu-ries take center stage, and the course concludes with the arrival of the Normans.Betsy Dominguez earned her Ph.D. from the University of Virginia. She has been a research fellow at the Institute for Cultural Studies at the Humboldt University of Berlin and received grants from the Medieval Academy of America, the International Center of Medieval Art, and the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art.

Revisiting u.S. History: exploring our StoriesInstructors: Janet Stone and Roger Smith10:30 – 11:30am July 20 through August 24Program fee: $40 for members; $80 for visitorsLike every country, the U.S. has its history and it has its stories. The two are not necessarily the same. Sometimes the stories develop from the ground up. Usually historians shape the narrative and later historians reshape it. Through the process of telling and re-telling, a history emerges. This course examines the interplay of story and history using the engaging book by Harvard historian and New Yorker essayist Jill Lepore, The Story of America: Essays on Origins. From John Smith to Charlie Chan, these essays offer a fresh look at people and events we think we know so well.Text for this course: The Story of America: Essays on Origins by Jill Lepore (ISBN: 9780691159591)Janet Stone earned her Ph.D. in history at Emory University and served as a professor of history at Armstrong State University for more than thirty years. Roosevelt, Lyndon Johnson, Richard Nixon, and Ronald Reagan. Byron Boyd has taught European and American history at Savannah Country Day School since 1982. Summer Kick Off LectureFDR in Georgia

Kaye Minchew12:00 noon June 15

First Presbyterian Church 520 Washington Avenue at Paulsen Street

Program fee: $6 for members; $12 for visitors

Despite Franklin Roosevelt’s 41 visits to Georgia between 1924 and 1945, historians have paid little attention to the significance of the thirty-second President’s time in the Peach State. Georgia

helped restore his health and well-being as a polio sufferer and provided a launching pad for his Presidential campaigns. Here the Harvard graduate became friends with the common man, had his active lifestyle of hunting and fishing photographed by the national press, and fought with Georgia politicians such as Gene Talmadge. Roosevelt visited Savannah in January 1933 as the state celebrated the bicentennial of its settlement. He died in Georgia in the company of his longtime mistress Lucy Mercer. Through images, audio and video clips, and oral histories, Kaye Minchew explores this fascinating chapter of Georgia and America’s history. Copies of A President in Our Midst: Franklin D. Roosevelt in Georgia will be available for purchase at the lecture.Kaye Lanning Minchew is an archives and public history consultant in LaGrange, Georgia. She retired as executive director of the Troup County Historical Society in 2015.

Roots of Awareness: How Plants Sense Their WorldLecturer: Beth Mowry12:00 noon June 22Program fee: $6 for members; $12 for visitorsScientists have strong indications that plants employ remarkable abilities to sense what’s going on around them. Unable to run away from their enemies or toward any food source, plants depend on their “senses” to survive. Retired educator and reference librarian Beth Mowry employs vivid descriptions, images, and videos to demonstrate the ways in which plants “see, taste, feel, smell, and remember” in order to, as best they can, manage and adapt to their environment.

Little is known about the descendants of ancient Egypt, the Copts. The largest Christian minority in the Middle East still uses the language of ancient Egypt. Amani Eissa-Awad, a native Egyptian Copt, embarks on a journey across time and oceans to discover the fascinating history of the Coptic Christians of Egypt.

Beautifying Savannah’s Civic RealmLecturer: Ardis Wood12:00 noon July 20Program fee: $6 for members; $12 for visitorsSavannah is known the world over as an aesthetically pleasing place, a destination for stately squares and parks, inspiring buildings and monuments, lush trees and flowering plants. Yet unsightly elements invade the civic realm, threatening to rob Savannah of the very beauty which attracts visitors and makes Savannah a prime place to live. Savannah resident and civic activist Ardis Wood demon-strates through stories and images the beauty that is Savannah and the dangers against which she strives.

GuTs and Toes and the Things that Tie Them TogetherLecturer: Jeffery Secrest12:00 noon July 27Program fee: $6 for members; $12 for visitorsWhat makes up the Universe? Do fundamental particles and their interac-tions, as understood today, comprise the final word on physics? Experimental and aesthetic clues indicate there is more than what scientists now know. This presentation begins with a description of the Standard Model of particle physics. It then delves into possibilities beyond the Model, revealing concepts at the forefront of scientists’ attempts to unify the fundamental forces and discover a theory of everything.

The not-So Peaceable Kingdom: Animals and early SavannahiansLecturer: Jamie Credle12:00 noon August 3Program fee: $6 for members; $12 for visitorsDid people in early Savannah have pets, and if so, how were those pets treated? Jamie Credle, director of the Davenport House Museum, examines the rela-tionship between Savannahians and their animals in the early nineteenth century. With very close proximity to horses, dogs, pigs, and birds, these people led lives entwined with those of the animal kingdom. This fascinating lecture synthesizes historic records, art, and artifacts, including references to the Davenport family, enslaved workers, and other denizens of Savannah, to paint a picture of a “not-so peaceable” kingdom.

Women in Windows in Victorian LiteratureLecturer: Beth Howells12:00 noon August 10Program fee: $6 for members; $12 for visitors“There was no possibility of taking a walk that day,” opens Bronte’s Jane Eyre as Jane sits impris-oned within the window. She returns to windows throughout the novel. So does Dorothea Brooke in Eliot’s Middlemarch, framed by her “gentlewom-an’s oppressive liberty.” Tennyson’s “The Lady of Shalott” “at the casement” stood. Then there are the Pre-Raphaelite stun-ners: Millais’ Mariana, Hunt’s Awakening

Conscience, and Rossetti’s Blessed Damozel. Why all of the women in windows in Victorian novels, poetry, and art? This lecture by Armstrong State University’s Beth Howells tells the stories.

How and Why the Jews Loved napoleonLecturer: Robert Haas12:00 noon August 17Program fee: $6 for members; $12 for visitorsThe French Revolution ended discrimi-nation based on religion (and nearly ended religion). Napoleon’s conquest of Western Europe brought Jews out of the ghettoes where they had been marginal-ized for centuries. While some historians believe that Napoleon’s emancipation of the Jews was merely a first step in their assimilation and ultimate disappearance as a distinct community, the pragmatic assessment and effect on balance was immeasurably positive for European Jewry. Rabbi Robert Haas recounts the story of the Jews under Napoleon and tells how and why they loved their Emperor.

B-17 RestorationLecturer: Jerry McLaughlin12:00 noon August 24Program fee: $6 for members; $12 for visitorsIn January 2009, Jerry McLaughlin first spotted a Second World War B-17 bomber in a Smithsonian storage hangar in Chantilly, Virginia. Six years later, the aircraft – renamed The City of Savannah – was dedicated in honor of veterans of the Eighth Air Force at the National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force. Jerry McLaughlin, project manager for the restoration, discusses the process of resurrecting the bomber and the historical and emotional impact it has exerted on the volunteer restoration team and the entire Savannah community.
