With so much health information available, it can be difficult to focus on what really matters. Wherever you are on your wellness journey, a sound and simple strategy is to lean on the four pillars of good health: adequate sleep, nutritious food, regular exercise, and stress management. If you have type 2 diabetes, or any other chronic condition, this strategy can help you live well with your condition. Pages 4-5 have more.

Keeping tabs on inflammation is another way to avoid and/or improve your body’s response to disease. Dr. Jill Gora, SMG

A Message to Our Communityfamily medicine physician, notes that lifestyle choices can make a difference—read her advice on page 3. Making healthy choices can also help your brain stay well and avoid the complications of hypertension. Measure your efforts to keep your pressure down—find out how on page 7.

How to Keep Inflammation In Check

Inflammation is a double-edged sword. In the short term, it’s your body’s protective response to injury,

infection, or irritation. If you cut your finger, for example,

blood rushes to the area carrying immune system cells. Your finger becomes inflamed — red, warm, swollen, and sore — as your immune system works on repairing the injury. But once your finger heals, the symp-toms disappear.

When Inflammation LingersIf something goes awry, however, inflammation may hang around for weeks, months, or even years. “Over time, it can really start to hurt your body,” says Jill Gora, MD, a family medicine physician at Summit Medical Group. “Chronic inflammation plays a role in some of our most common health problems, including heart disease, asthma, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and gum disease.”

Now here’s the good news: Eating wisely and reducing stress helps decrease chronic inflammation. And that, in turn, helps improve your body’s response to these diseases. “Our health is not just a complete roll of the dice,” says Dr. Gora. “We can make a difference in how well and how long we live through our lifestyle choices.”

Healthy Foods Part of an anti-Inflammatory LifestyleOne of the best weapons against chronic inflammation is a healthy

diet. According to Dr. Gora, some of the best inflammation-fighting foods include:• Vegetables, especially cruciferous

vegetables such as broccoli and cauliflower

• Fruits, especially berries• Beans, especially soybeans• Whole and cracked grains, intact

or in large pieces (not ground into fine flour)

• Extra-virgin olive oil• Salmon, sardines, and black cod• White, green, and oolong tea• Dark chocolate, in small amounts

Also, if you drink, choose red wine, and consume no more than one glass per day.

In contrast, other foods tend to fuel

excessive inflammation. Dr. Gora recommends cutting back on foods that contain trans fat, saturated fat, and high-fructose corn syrup.

stress also Plays a RoleLearning how to better manage stress also helps combat over-inflammation. “Take a few minutes when you first wake up to sit at the side of your bed, close your eyes and center yourself,” Dr. Gora suggests. Other stress-busters include exercising, meditating, breathing exercises, and listening to soothing music.

Keep in mind that you don’t have to change your whole lifestyle at once. Dr. Gora says, “Even small increments of change add up over time.”

If you have type 2 diabetes—a condition in which the body does not use insulin properly—making

major lifestyle changes is essential, but what happens if you “slip up” or don’t see immediate results? Will you simply give up and return to old habits?

“I encourage patients to avoid an ‘all or nothing’ mindset when it comes to tackling diabetes,” says Summit Medical Group endocrinolo-gist Jeffrey Bauman, MD. “It’s not about achieving perfection, but more about

aiming for a balance in the four pillars of good health.”

adopt a simple strategy The pillars of good health include:1 Adequate sleep2 Nutritious food 3 Regular exercise 4 Stress management

Recognizing and learning the basics about the four pillars provides a strong “map” for individuals who don’t know where to begin on their path to a healthier life.

While medications such as insulin help control the serious complications of diabetes, changing lifelong habits is crucial.

“Instead of saying ‘I can’t do this,’ if you try small steps, such as limiting your carbohydrate intake and getting more rest at night, it may reduce the number of medications you have to take, which is terrific,” says Dr. Bauman. “At Summit Medical Group, our experienced diabetes team of physicians, nurses, educators, and nutritionists guides patients through their journey with the four pillars of good health, even if they get derailed by life’s many ups and downs.”

Patient Has SMG Team on His SideWhen Louis Friedman was diagnosed with diabetes five years ago, he decided not to take the news lying down.

So he made changes, such as hitting the gym and playing tennis; eating fewer carbohydrates and starches; and taking the advice of his Summit medical Group endocrinologist, Jeffrey Bauman, m.D.

“I’m managing this disease in partnership with Dr. Bauman and my primary care physician, Dr. richard Nelson,” says the 56-year-old Friedman.

A team of diabetes experts, including a diabetes nurse educator, provide Friedman with the treatment and infor-mation to effectively tackle his condition.

“The care at Summit medical Group is phenomenal all the way around,” says Friedman. “For example, if my doctor orders a test, I just go across the hall to take it and have the results in 20 minutes, instead of waiting days for an answer.”

Friedman says that his focus on nutrition and exer-cise has resulted in lower blood sugar levels and fewer medications. Cutting back on some medications has had another bonus: fewer side effects.

“Not only are my numbers better, but I feel more energetic,” says Friedman. “It takes effort and a team of Summit medical Group cheerleaders to guide me, but because I’m taking charge of my diabetes, I feel healthier than ever.”

To Meet Diabetes’ Challenges, Lean On the 4 Pillars of Good Healthincorporate additional changes and break the cycle of poor nutrition, weight gain, and inactivity. For example, if you replace fast foods with tasty home-cooked meals, it may inspire you to walk briskly five days a week, two steps that can help you control or even prevent diabetes.

While exercise can seem daunting to many people at first, Dr. Bauman finds that those who push through and become more active feel better.

“Paying attention to the four pillars of good health works — I have seen many patients feel more vibrant after they begin to break the bad habits that may have led to diabetes in the first place,” says Dr. Bauman. “Diabetes affects people physically, psychologically, and financially, so staying positive and taking control of it can be absolutely life-altering.”

t hey say age brings wisdom. But making smart, healthy choices earlier—in midlife—

could help preserve your brainpower for years to come.

Adults with lower blood pressure between ages 48 and 67 have higher thinking and learning scores 20 years down the line, Johns Hopkins University researchers found. That’s far from the only benefit of keeping your blood pressure within the recommended range. And there’s a lot you can do to bring those numbers down at any age.

blood Pressure and brain: What’s the Link? Most people know that hypertension harms the heart. As your blood pushes through your arteries with greater force, artery walls harden and thicken. This decreases the flow of blood and oxygen to your heart muscle. Over time, you may develop heart failure or have a heart attack.

High blood pressure can damage the brain in much the same way. Excess

Hypertension Linked to Later Memory Problemsforce can also burst or block blood vessels leading to your brain, starving your neurons of oxygen. In some cases, this causes a stroke or sudden, traumatic brain attack. In others, it reduces your cognitive abilities slowly.

your Intellectual Protection Plan High blood pressure plays a role in an estimated 1,000 deaths in the U.S. each day, doctors say. One in three Americans has it, and many have no idea, since it often has no symptoms.

The good news? Taking steps to reduce it pays healthy dividends at any age. To get started:• Askyourdoctoraboutriskfactors.

Being overweight, having a family his-tory, and using tobacco all play a role.

• Requestabloodpressurereading. Knowing your numbers can help you control them.

• Eatahealthydiet. Aim to consume more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Limit your sodium or salt intake to a teaspoon per day. Looking fo r a Physician?
