Words of Praise by Irv Ginsburg
Message from Our President
I recently attended the funeral of a
friend’s mother who had taught in a
small town in Georgia for forty two
years. The service lasted two hours and
i n c l u d e d e u l o g i e s , a c t u a l l y
remembrances, of her students. It was
too bad Miss Kate wasn’t able to hear
what was being said. It would have
caused a bright smile on her face. The
words of praise moved me and caused
me to think about my next letter to
you. I have now reached a real
milestone in my B'nai Zion presidency,
one year of service. Time flies, and at
my age it is at supersonic speed. I want
to share my experience with all of you
so that you can smile, along with me, as
I recount why my experiences of the
last year have been so positive.
B'nai Zion runs on the time of the
volunteers who seem to do things
without question. The office runs, the
kitchen runs, the grounds run, the
building runs, the pantry runs and the
list goes on. Whenever a need arises
someone seems to show up.
Recognition is not sought but I believe
is not only necessary but mandatory.
Let me start. When you come in the
front door, gaze to the right. There
used to be a magnolia tree and shrubs
which were removed by Shelton
Goldblatt because they had outgrown
their space. Now there sits a new
Japanese maple tree and some very
pretty plantings. Who did it? Joyce
Thomas who volunteers in our office
every week and thought we needed to
offer a more welcoming spot at the
entrance. The phones seem to be
manned constantly by John Lewis. He
also has so many ideas to help the
congregation that he has my head
spinning. When you come to the
Annual Meeting on June 9, we will
share with you one of his ideas to raise
money that is out of the box but
doable.
Our building ticks along with all its
warts. This is the result of Lester
Votava being there every day ensuring
that the building runs without
interruption. He also helps with our
religious services, shopping for supplies
and who knows what else. Roy
Rosenfeld is our invisible grocery
maven. He knows where to get
heckshered food supplies like no one
else I know. He also knows a bargain
when he sees it. His wife, our Jackie,
has been involved in board affairs and
teaching for many years. Issi Goldberg
has become the man to turn to when
baking is needed. Every Shabbat the
motzi is done with Issi's challah. All of
these folks deserve our thanks. When
you next see them pass it on!
Now we need to recognize our
salaried staff. Marcia Menuskin does
more for B'nai Zion than I even know
about. Her knowledge and experience
allows the business end to run
smoothly and without interruption.
Deborah Wint keep us all on track
even though she works remotely. She is
ever-present when questions arise,
publications need attention or history
needs refreshing. In fact we think
North Carolina, where she works from
home, is a suburb of Chattanooga.
Mable Willingham cooks up a storm
without supervision, and the tastes that
she produces bring our congregants
back for more. We recently hired Alfie
Jones who seems to know his way
about the building as if he were an old
timer. He also helps out in the kitchen
when the need arises.
Last summer we welcomed Rabbi
Tendler and her family to B'nai Zion
and Chattanooga. It has been a delight
working with her, and we look forward
to many years of association. Ross
Sadoff, her husband, reads Torah and
leads services with ease and enjoyment.
The Tendler/Sadoff family gives the
impression that they are part of us and
have been for a long time. The team of
Rabbi Tendler and Jason Cathcart
cannot, in my opinion, be matched
anywhere in the country. Jason is there
leading our children’s Hebrew education,
developing and delivering adult
programs, Bar and Bat Mitzvah
preparation for kids and adults, and teen
activities. He also teaches in the
combined community Sunday School.
Vicki, his wife, is a frequent Torah
reader and seems to be there whenever
she is available. We are also thrilled to
have all of the Tendler/Sadoff and
Cathcart children who add pizazz to our
congregation. Wow, what a team we
have going! Thank them when you see
them!
Last month I mentioned those folks
who always seem to be involved in our
services, and I want to thank all of them.
In summing up my first year I need to
say I had no idea what I was getting into.
Looking back the experience has been
marvelous. I do much less than the
people I have attempted to highlight, and
I wanted to make sure the credit is given
where it is due. Give them a hug, a
handshake and a smile. They are what
makes B'nai Zion our family and the
place to be!!!! Have a great summer and
stay tuned for some exciting things
coming during the summer!!!!!

In All Your Paths by Rabbi Susan Tendler
Message from Our Rabbi
This verse from the book of
Proverbs was one of the first that I
studied as I embarked upon a two year
journey and commitment with the
Institute for Jewish Spirituality a few
years ago. One can understand it in so
many ways—coming to know God
through everything you do—eating,
working, playing golf, gardening, yoga,
etc-- everything you do can be a physical
means to spiritually knowing God.
But as I write consider the past year
along with the year ahead, I have a
slightly different take on what else this
beautiful phrase is encouraging us to
understand. And that is the
acknowledgement that there are in fact,
multiple paths to accessing or coming
to know God. For many the main road
is prayer but for many others it is
community. Some find God in nature,
others through texts and study. Some
seek God through action and others
through quiet meditation. Some in
silence and others through song. What
I understand this verse, B’chol d’ra-
che’cha da-ay-who, “in all of your paths,
know God”, to mean is that each path,
each course is equally valid and
valuable.
I am continually exploring other
means for increasing my awareness of
God. But I am not, nor are any of us,
limited to these routes. This year, I am
very excited to work with many of you
as individuals and as committees to
opening new doors for our B’nai Zion
community. I encourage you to get
involved—to join a committee and help
be a part of something meaningful and
larger than yourself, whether it be
through working on the vision of our
congregation and helping ensure that
vision is expressed in everything we do,
or contributing your ideas, time and
energy to developing a strategic plan
with the help of United Synagogue, or
thinking seriously about the future of
our BZ family and paving the way to
help us get there. Or maybe you are
interested in establishing a Keruv
committee dedicated to creating an even
more welcoming synagogue. Or perhaps
a care committee, which I firmly believe
will provide entry points for those
serving on the committee just as much if
not more than those whom the
committee seeks to serve. The education
committee is seeking volunteers
committed to fulfilling both our
children’s and our adults’ needs. Our
Shomrim committee chaired by Joe
Kodsi, that does a chesed shel emet—one of
the greatest acts of loving kindness by
watching over and saying prayers for our
recently deceased. And our Sisterhood
or Mens’ Club provides meaningful
programs and activities for our
community, with multiple entry points
for involvement.
The point is that there are so many
doors waiting to be opened, so many
paths waiting to be traveled—from
services to education, action to
meditation, community to individual
focus--this year, let’s join together. The
inevitable synergy that unites our path is
destined to create a more welcoming and
meaningful home for all in and out of
B’nai Zion. B’nai Zion will be more
than a place you pay dues, and more
than just a place that your parents and
grandparents belonged to, but it will
then be transformed into a home in
which each of us as individuals feel that
we are vital links to creating this spiritual
home uniting us all as Children of
Israel, B’nai Zion.
B’chol d’ra-che’cha da-ay-who ָדֵעהּו ְּבָכל־ְּדָרֶכי In all of your paths, know God -Proverbs 3:6

6 BZ Voice Summer 2013
Message from Our Director of Congregational Learning
Time for Summer
I’ve written articles in the past about my summer cleaning
rituals in my office. Well, this year is no different and I will
be making my piles and going through papers well into the
month of June. Feel free to drop in and check on my
progress...after July 1. :-)
Last month I wrote an extensive thank you list in this
article to all the people that help to make Beit Sefer Ivri run as
a well oiled machine. From the teachers to the volunteers,
parents to the synagogue board members: they are all an
integral part of the team.
This month I’d like to mention two special members of
our team that will not be rejoining us next year on the BSI
teaching staff - Jennifer Dzik and Jackie Rosenfled.
Ms. Jackie has been teaching in different incarnations of
the B’nai Zion Hebrew school for over 17 years. She has
worked with different rabbis, cantors and educators. Through
all of the change, Ms. Jackie’s classroom has been a place of
inspired Jewish learning for more students than we have room
to mention. Her classroom is always filled with students
learning in a creative way. Whether it’s Hebrew bingo, Bible
scavenger hunts, translating articles from Hebrew to English
by Jason Cathcart
or creating Hebrew vocabulary videos, Ms. Jackie’s class is a
great place to be on a Wednesday afternoon.
Ms. Jennifer has been teaching since her daughter Rachel,
now 14, started at BSI. For around a decade, she has instilled
a love of Judaism in all of her students by engaging them in
meaningful activities. You can often find Ms. Jennifer and
her class walking around the synagogue on a Wednesday
afternoon looking at all the ritual objects in the building and
practicing their Hebrew vocabulary. In her classroom,
students are often absorbed in learning Hebrew letters,
listening to stories on Jewish values or holidays or creating
holiday items to take home.
Ms. Jackie and Ms. Jennifer have provided for the Jewish
needs of our community for many years. Their dedication
and excellence will be missed at Beit Sefer Ivri. I look forward
to them visiting us on a Wednesday afternoon in the near
future to enjoy the fruits of their great labor. Kol HaKavod to
them both on a job well done!
Have a great summer!
