Outline Rubric with Task Specific Clarifications (Criterion C, E, I, K) The Criterion used for this outline are four of the eleven criterion used to grade the Extended Essay. They are taken from the IB Extended Essay guide with slight modifications for an

outline. Pay attention to the task specific clarifications as they guide you on how to achieve a maximum score for each criterion.

Criterion C: Investigation This criterion assesses the extent to which the investigation is planned and an appropriate range of sources has been consulted, or data has been gathered, that is relevant to the research question. *Where the research question does not lend itself to a systematic investigation in the subject in which the essay is registered, the maximum level that can be awarded for this criterion is 2.

Criterion C: Task Specific Clarifications

0 i. There is no evidence that sources have been consulted or data gathered, and little or no evidence of planning in the investigation. ii. Outline is inadequately detailed to cover the topic; there is not depth appropriate to the scope of the final assignment.

Does not have approved research question. Did not turn in outline. For English & Theater-did not read the primary sources that they are analyzing for their EE. Film-did not watch the primary sources that they are analyzing for their EE.

1 i. A range of inappropriate sources has been consulted, or inappropriate data has been gathered, and there is little evidence that the investigation has been planned. ii. Outline is detailed to cover the topic in some depth appropriate to the scope of the final assignment

2 i. A limited range of appropriate sources has been consulted, or data has been gathered, and some relevant material has been selected. There is evidence of some planning in the investigation. ii. Outline is adequately detailed to cover the topic in sufficient depth appropriate to the scope of the final assignment

Research Question is approved. Uploaded a limited Enoch Pratt Work Day Form. Includes some sources.

3 i. A sufficient range of appropriate sources has been consulted, or data has been gathered, and relevant material has been selected. The investigation has been satisfactorily planned. ii. Outline is satisfactorily detailed to cover the topic in sufficient depth appropriate to the scope of the final assignment

Research Question is approved. Uploaded Enoch Pratt Work Day Form. Includes credible sources. Examined at least 3 arguments. Evidence includes detailed analysis and interpretation from reliable sources

4 i. An imaginative range of appropriate sources has been consulted, or data has been gathered, and relevant material has been carefully selected. The investigation has been well planned. ii. Outline is amply detailed to cover the topic in sufficient depth appropriate to the scope of the final assignment

Research Question is approved. Uploaded detailed Enoch Pratt Work Day Form. Includes a variety of credible sources (Interviews, books, articles, etc.) Includes primary sources. Evidence includes detailed analysis and interpretation from reliable sources.

Criterion E: Reasoned Argument This criterion assesses the extent to which the essay uses the material collected to present ideas in a logical and coherent manner, and develops a reasoned argument

in relation to the research question. *Where the research question does not lend itself to a systematic investigation in the subject in which the essay is registered, the maximum level that can be awarded for this criterion is 2.

Criterion E: Task Specific Clarifications

0 i. There is no attempt to develop a reasoned argument in relation to the research question.

1 i. There is a limited or superficial attempt to present ideas in a logical and coherent manner, and to develop a reasoned argument in relation to the research question.

2 i. There is some attempt to present ideas in a logical and coherent manner, and to develop a reasoned argument in relation to the research question, but this is only partially successful.

3 i. Ideas are presented in a logical and coherent manner ii. A reasoned argument is developed in relation to the research question, but with some weaknesses.

Criterion I: Formal Presentation This criterion assesses the extent to which the layout, organization, appearance and formal elements of the essay consistently follow a standard format.

Criterion K: Holistic Judgment This criterion allows examiners to reward work that shows initiative, even if the essay does not achieve the highest standard overall.

1 Little evidence of intellectual initiative, depth of understanding and insight

Student had to be assigned meeting time because they never set it up on their own. Did not turn in Plan of Action.

2 Some evidence of intellectual initiative, depth of understanding and insight

Student did not initiate conference on time. Student was unprepared for conference; could not speak about outline.; waited for advisor to ask leading questions. Student was not interested in constructive criticism. Student did not complete a Plan of Action based on advisor feedback.

3 Clear evidence of intellectual initiative, depth of understanding and insight

Student attempted to contact advisor and set up appointment in the prescribed time frame. Student was minimally prepared; Student expected advisor to lead the conversation; did not have a clear understanding of resources read; personal thoughts and ideas regarding topic are not established; could not engage in substantial conversation about outline.. Student was somewhat receptive to constructive criticism and completed a limited Plan of Action based on advisor feedback.

4 Considerable intellectual initiative, depth of understanding and insight

Student contacted advisor and set up appointment in the prescribed time frame. Student was clearly prepared; could talk fluently about his/her outline; initiated and dominated the conversation with the advisor; conference was productive. Student was receptive to constructive criticism and completed a detailed Plan of Action based on advisor feedback.
