Summary: Upstate Prostate Cancer Alliance Education and Awareness Program 2015

1. Number of individuals educated with UsTOO’s guidelines for the early detection and prevention of prostate cancer

through educational presentations : 552 from January 1, 2015 thru December 31, 2015

2. Number of individuals receiving free screening for the early detection of prostate cancer:

206 from January 1st 2015 thru December 8th, 2015

2015 Education & Awareness ( 57 % African American)





Screening Results

Gibbs Cancer Center (Greer SC)

A total of 17 men were screened on March 10, 2015

The demographics of the men who were screened are as follows:

Black/African American – 3

Bon Secours Health System (Greenville SC)

A total of 50 men were screened on May 16, 2015



Gibbs Cancer Center (Greer SC)

A total of 14 men were screened on June 10, 2015



Gibbs Cancer Center (Spartanburg SC)

A total of 26 men were screened on Sept 10, 2015



Greenville Health System (Greenville SC)

A total of 99 men were screened on September 12, 2015 at the KROC center



Gibbs Cancer Center (Gaffney SC)

The screening scheduled for December 8th was canceled due to lack of interest.

The men were screened with a PSA blood test and digital rectal exams (DRE) . Men with suspicious results were

advised to get make follow up appointment. If the man did not have insurance he was directed where he could get

assistance. A Nurse Navigator will continue the follow-up to ensure that the men showed up for their appointment

and established future care, if needed.





Free Prostate Screening Tracking 2006-2015

Observations

Overall screening continues to decline. We believe this is because of the ongoing controversy over the

benefit or lack of benefit of PSA screening. We continue to encourage "informed decision making" for those

men at risk, especially African American men. Although overall screening numbers are down, we are

pleased that over 56% of men screened through our outreach efforts in upstate South Carolina were

African Americans. But at the same time we are concerned because recent studies suggest that these

relaxed screening guidelines as a result of the 2011 USPSTF recommendations may delay diagnoses and

treatment of aggressive tumors that could possibly lead to advance disease and even death.





The Greenville Chapter of Us TOO and the Upstate Prostate Cancer Alliance along with our medical

partners are sensitive to the issues of over treatment therefore we focus our effort to provide education and

awareness to everyone. And free screening only for those individuals in high risk groups and those

individuals without the resources or access to be screened otherwise.

The Greenville Chapter of Us TOO and the Upstate Prostate Cancer Alliance recommends establishing a

screening base line at age 40 and having that conversation with your physician.
