assignment 1precedent case study
In groups of 2, we were asked to study prec-edent houses. We chanced upon the Lovell Health house by Richard Neutra.
This house is located on a steep hillside in Los Angeles and was the first house of it’s kind in the world, built using industrial tech-niques and a steel prefabricated frame.

assignment 2-1site analysis
The site is situated in the SW region of Calgary. Flanked by the Shaganappi Point Golf course to the West, Bow Trail to the South, Bow river to the North and CrowchildCrowchild Trail to the East, this site is a parkland area and a popular destination for cyclists, joggers and visitors alike.
There is good access via car, transit, bike and walking. This site has many unique features which are highlighted in the analysis
2015Bow Trail expansion. West LRT is brought to the SW quadrant of the city. Shaganappi Point Golf Course
celebrates its centennial
1950HarryHarry and Laura Jacques, pertinent historical figures, sell the land adjacent to the site to the city of Calgary as a “trust dedicated to the public use of the citizens of Calgary.” Plans for Bow Trail (previously Banff
Coach Road) commence
1930The neighbourhoods in proximity to the site are parcelled off. The area is known as “West Calgary.” “Shaganappi” means “rawhide” in the
Cree language
1910ShaganappiShaganappi Point Golf Course opens in 1915. Previously on the site sat Calgary’s primary cemetary. It was initially proposed as a park area, and a potential way to increase streetcar
revenue

Balsam poplar is a native deciduous tree that can grow up to 6m tall.
Rough fescue grass is recognised by its bunch form and purplish stems.
Forbs is a broadleaved, non-woody plant.
SlipperySlippery elm is a medium-sized forest tree of stream banks and low fertile slopes.
Pines are evergreen, coniferous resinous trees growing 3–80 m tall, with the majority of species reaching 15–45 m tall.

Group Experiences on Site
Summary of Findings
A few opportunities for improvements have been identified: erosion mitigation at area identified; increase in lighting for night time visitors for improved security; addition of a train indicator at the cross-section identified; pathway at the bottleneck enlarged as identified; connect pathway to public road at northern edge of site; improve visibility in certain areas of site for improved security.
In groups of 3 we were asked to conduct a full site analysis of a public area near Shaganappi trail in Calgary.

n.t.s.
the inspiration for the viewing platform has been derived from the basic elements of the Lovell Health House designed by Richard Neutra. this includes basic geometrical elements and the heirarchial steel grid construction
access is via ramp and a small set of stairs. the primary materials are concrete, steel and corten. a bench within the inspirations of this design intervention is provided at the last section of the viewing platform. this is where the most desirable views are found.

Architectural Program // studio 1 project 3 // sumer matharu
The maximum activity happens in the kitchen & dining, living room, and outdoor access areas. Adequate circulation needs to be provided between these areas and with the rest of the spaces.
The planned floor areas for the different rooms are as follows:• Master bedroom 500 sq. ft. (46.45 m2)• Guest bedroom 358 sq. ft. (33.26 m2)• Kitchen & Dining 500 sq. ft. (46.45 m2)• Living area / yoga studio 650 sq. ft. (60.39 m2)• Studio 250 sq. ft. (23.23 m2)• Garage 250 sq. ft. (23.23 m2)• Foyer 120 sq. ft. (11.15 m2)• Rooftop garden entire roof space

HouseCoyote dwellingFloraCirculation
The planned location for the house is shown on the left. The access is via the existing dirt road which will be paved to allow a car to to travel safely to and from 24th street SW. The entrance to the paved pathway from 24th street will be gated. The same pathway will allow bicycles circulation as well.
The pathway all the way to the house accommodates the flora into the design of the surrounding landscape. This also serves to create a natural barrier between the house inhabitants and the coyotes on site.
The interaction between Connor, Ciara and Hot Dog, on one hand and the coyote’s on the other is limited to the provision of caves on site for the latter to inhabit. Connor and Ciara plan on monitoring and viewing their activities as distant pets.

Program in plan
Shown above is the spatial program as it relates to the amount of circulation to and from a space. This forms the basis for the requirements of the house and the circulation required between the different spaces.

Program model
Following the program in plan, shown to the left is the program spatial layout in section as it relates to the placement of the different areas in the house. The division of floors has been selected to segregate the different activities inside the house.
The roof garden will be a continuation of the outside flora area to be incorporated into the landscape design of the house. The garage, foyer, studio and both bedrooms with their own closets and ensuite washrooms have been placed together. The guest bedroom has a wheelchair friendly washroom and access.
The kitchen & dining area, living room and this floor’s own public washroom or powder room has been placed together. There will be direct access to the foyer from this floor instead of having to go through the other rooms on the 2nd floor.

In this project, we were individually required to interview other students from within our group to identify our clients. Then we created an architectural programme based on the client requirements. This included an architectural narrative as well.
assignment 3house design
This was our final project that was split into a few parts. This involved conceptual stud-ies and form generation, parti studies, plan and section order, tectonic studies including model building, and in the end the final project conclusion.
