Símbolos NacionalesBandera

El triángulo equilátero es una alusióna las ansias de libertad, igualdad y fra-ternidad, y su color rojo presagia lasangre que sería necesario verterpara conquistar la independencia. Laestrella solitaria situada en medio deltriángulo es símbolo de absolutalibertad. Las tres listas azules repre-sentan los departamentos (Occi-dente, Centro y Oriente) en que seencontraba dividida la Isla y las dosfranjas blancas significan la pureza yla virtud del pueblo cubano.

EscudoTiene la configu-ración de unaadarga ojival. Ensu campo supe-rior, una llavedorada simbolizala posición clave de la Isla, a la entradadel Golfo de México y entre las dosAméricas, mientras el sol nacienterepresenta el surgimiento de unanueva nación. Tres listas azules en elcuartel inferior izquierdo aluden a losdepartamentos en que se dividía elpaís en la época colonial. En el cuartelinferior derecho la palma real (símbolode la hidalguía y serena firmeza delcubano), las montañas y el cielo azulrepresentan el típico paisaje de la Isla. Un haz de once varas que simbolizala unidad de los cubanos en su luchapor la libertad sirve de soporte alescudo, coronado por un gorro frigiode color rojo en el cual aparece unaestrella blanca. Orlan el escudo, a la

derecha, una rama de encina y a laizquierda una de laurel, que represen-tan la fortaleza y la victoria.

Himno NacionalSu música y letra fueron compuestaspor el patriota bayamés Pedro(Perucho) Figueredo al inicio de lasgestas independentistas. Como can-ción patriótica y grito de guerra fueentonado, por primera vez, el 20 deoctubre de 1868 por la población de lavilla de San Salvador de Bayamo,región oriental del país.

National SymbolsThe FlagThe equilateral triangle is a clear reference to the yearning for liberty,equality and fraternity. The color red portends the spilling of blood thatwould be required to win independence. The single star located in the middleof the triangle is a symbol of absolute freedom. The three blue stripes represent theeastern, central and western provinces into which the island wasformerly divided. The two white stripssignify the purity and virtue of theCuban people.

ShieldThis is gothic shaped. On the upperparts there is a golden key that symbolizes the key position of theisland, at the entrance to the Gulf ofMexico and between the twoAmericas while the rising sun represents a new nation. Three bluestrips in the bottom left section are areference to the regions into whichthe country was divided during thecolonial period. In the bottom rightsection, the royal palm (symbol of

the nobility and the steadfastness ofCubans), the mountains and the clearblue sky represent a typical Cubanlandscape. A bundle of eleven staff that symbolizes the unity of the Cuban people in the struggle for freedom supports the shield, crowned by aPhrygian cap on which there is a whitestar. Bordering the shield, to the right,there is an oak branch, and to the left,a laurel branch, representing strengthand victory.

National AnthemThe music and lyrics were composedby Pedro (Perucho) Figueredo, fromBayamo, at the start of the independence struggles. As a patrioticsong, it was sung for the first time on October 20, 1868, by the inhabitants of Bayamo.

Pinar del Río, conocida como pro-vincia verde de Cuba, posee 34

áreas protegidas que ocupan el 22% de su superficie, dos sonReservas Mundiales de la Biosfera:Guanahacabibes y Sierra delRosario, y dos son Parques Nacio-nales: Guanahacabibes y Viñales.Este último es además PaisajeCultural de la Humanidad. La ciudad de Pinar del Río seencuentra a 175 km al oeste de LaHabana y es la capital de la terceraprovincia del país por su tamaño. Alnorte está la Cordillera de Guani-guanico, formada por la Sierra delos Órganos y la Sierra del Rosario.En la Sierra de los Órganos seencuentran valles intramontanosde singular belleza como el deViñales. Existen cerca de 800 espe-cies de plantas, 70 de ellas endé-micas de la región. Muchos ríos dela zona son subterráneos y han for-mado grandes cavernas como lade Santo Tomás, MonumentoNacional, con una 45 kilómetrosde galerías interconectadas.En la Sierra del Rosario encontra-mos el Pan de Guajaibón, puntomás alto de la provincia y parajes degran belleza como el parque turísti-co de Soroa y el proyecto de turis-mo sostenible de Las Terrazas.Existen maravillosas playas al norte,como las de Cayo Levisa y CayoJutías, cuyas arenas pueden com-petir con las de Varadero, y dondeademás se puede disfrutar de lascálidas y cristalinas aguas, así comopracticar deportes náuticos. Al suro-este está el Club Internacional deBuceo de María La Gorda, ubicadoen el Parque Nacional deGuanahacabibes.

Pinar del Rio, known as theGreen Province of Cuba, has

34 protected areas taking up 22%of the territory. Two are WorldBiosphere Reserves:Guanahacabibes and Sierra delRosario, 2 are National Parks:Guanahacabibes and Viñales.The latter is also Humanity'sCultural Landscape. Pinar del Riocity is found 175 km west ofHavana and it is the capital ofthe third largest province in thecountry. To the north lies theGuaniguanico mountain range,made up of the Organos andRosario mountain ranges.There are beautiful valleys, suchas the Viñales Valley, in theOrganos mountain range. Thereare more than 800 species ofplants and 70 of them are endemic of the area. Many ofthe region's rivers are underground rivers and have created great caves like the oneof Santo Tomas, a NationalMonument, with interconectedgalleries stretching 45 kilometersin. In the Rosario mountainrange we find the Pan deGuajaibón, the highest point inthe province as well as beautifulspots like the Soroa Tourist Parkand the sustainable tourism project of Las Terrazas. There arewhite sandy beaches to thenorth of the province like theones of Cayo Levisa and CayoJutías, where you can practice dif-ferent types of sports. To thesouth you have the María LaGorda International DivingCenter, located in theGuanahacabibes National Park.

El lunes 5 de noviembre de1492, dos marineros de

Cristóbal Colón que explorabanzonas de la isla de Cuba descu-brieron algo que los sorprendióen extremo y que luego el GranAlmirante hubo de apuntar en suDiario: "...por el camino hallaronmucha gente, los hombres conun tizón en la mano y ciertas yer-bas, que son unas yerbas secasmetidas en una hoja tambiénseca, a manera de mosquete yencendido por una parte de él,por la otra chupaban o sorben oreciben aquel humo con el resue-llo para adentro…"Sin apenas darse cuenta de lamagnitud del relato habían des-cubierto la tierra del tabaco.Rápidamente y con un placer sinigual, la curiosidad europeaaprendió de los indígenas cuba-nos el arte de fumar. Así, JuanNicot, embajador de Francia enLisboa, se lo hace saber a Catalinade Médicis; de ahí que al princi-pio fuera conocido como "la hier-ba de la Reina", hasta que el natu-ralista sueco Linneo asentó elgénero Nicotina, precisamente

en honor a Nicot. Más tarde, elcorsario Francis Drake lo introdujoen Inglaterra. Originario de Cuba, se cultiva ycosecha en varias regiones de laIsla, pero principalmente en lasvegas de Vueltabajo, ubicadas enla provincia de Pinar del Río.La planta del tabaco es muy deli-cada, su cultivo requiere muchatécnica y experiencia del vegueroorgulloso. Las casas de tabaco se destacanen el paisaje de la vega. Son depuntal muy alto, construidas conmadera, guano y hojas de palma,orientadas de este a oeste paraque el sol les dé en horas de lamañana. Las fábricas se encuen-tran, por lo general, en las ciuda-des y pueblos. Los puros o tabacos se ciñen conunas anillas o vitolas, etiquetaslitográficas de una marca determi-nada que constituyen su sello degarantía y verdaderas obras dearte. Existen miles de vitófilos enel mundo que coleccionan conpasión los valiosos ejemplares deeste antiguo arte cubano.

On November 5th, 1492, aMonday, two members of

Christopher Columbus's crewexploring areas in the island ofCuba discovered something thatsurprised them enormously,which the Great Admiral later jotted down in his Diary:"...along the way they foundmany people, the men holding a charred stick in their hands andcertain grasses, which are drygrasses wrapped on a dry leave,like a musket, and they lit oneend of it and sucked or absorbedor received that smoke by holding their breath…"Without realizing the magnitudeof their story, they had discovered the land of tobacco.Quickly, and with great pleasure,European curiosity learned fromthe Cuban natives the art of smoking. Thus Juan Nicot, Frenchambassador to Lisbon, writes toCatherine of Medici; that is whyin the beginning it was known as"the Queen's grass" until Linneo,the Swedish naturalist, namedthe gender Nicotine, in honor ofNicot. Later, Francis Drake the

corsair introduced it in England.Tobacco is native to Cuba, andgrown and picked in severalregions of the Island, but mostlyin the meadows of Vueltabajo, inPinar del Río.The tobacco plant is very delicate; its cultivation requirestechnique and the basic experience of the proud tobaccogrowers. The tobacco drying houses are alandmark in the landscapes ofthe meadows. They are built on avery high prop, made of wood,palm leaves and guano and positioned east to west to receive sunlight in the earlyhours of the morning. The factories are usually found in thecities and towns. Cigars or havanos are boundwith rings or vitolas, lithographiclabels of a specific brand whichconstitute their seal of guaranteeand true woks of art. There are thousands of passionate collectors around theworld of these valuable specimens of an ancient Cuban art.

Ubicado en la península alextremo occidental de la pro-

vincia, constituye la reserva fores-tal más grande del país y estáconectada al resto del territoriopor un istmo donde se hallan lasllanuras de arenas blancas y lazona lacustre mayor de Cuba. Enella se conserva la vegetación ori-ginal, con una fauna muy rica enaves acuáticas, moluscos y repti-les. En un espacio relativamentereducido existen más de un cen-tenar de lagos y los yacimientosde arena sílice más puros -99.8 %de pureza- y mayores del país.Aquí los pinares son endémicos yextensos y el estrato herbáceopresenta la fauna más rica deestos ecosistemas. Guanahacabibes es una llanurabaja con abundancia de cavida-des subterráneas como la Cuevade la Barca, de gran riqueza

bioespeleológica y surgideros deagua dulce en el mar. En estas lla-nuras arenosas se cultivan funda-mentalmente cítricos y tabacorubio, además de otros cultivosvarios. Sorprende la gran variedad depaisajes y de ecosistemas: bos-ques siempre verdes, incluidoslos de mangle, costas de playascon vegetación de Ciénaga, costaalta acantilada y costa arenosacon vegetación de uveral, franjasde almácigos y palmitas. Existeuna gran profusión de orquídeasepifitas y terrestres, en total 16especies, algunas endémicas yotras recientemente descubier-tas. También viven en esta reser-va una gran cantidad de aves,mariposas, moluscos y plantasinsectívoras. Esta península posee un ricopatrimonio arquitectónico del

período prehispánico y de la acti-vidad de piratas y corsarios,envuelto en una atmósfera deleyendas e historias.

Located on the peninsula at the western end of the

province, it constitutes the largest forest reserve in thecountry, separated from the restof the territory by an isthmuswith white sand plains and thelargest lakeside area in Cuba. The original vegetation has beenprotected, with a fauna rich onaquatic birds, mollusks and reptiles. In a relatively small areathere are over a hundred lakesand the purest silica sands deposits -99.8 % purity- the largest in the country. The pineforests are indigenous and vast,and the grassy plains hold therichest fauna in these ecos-ystems. Guanahacabibes is a low plain with an abundance of subterranean caves such as theCueva de la Barca, of great bio

spelunking richness, and freshwaters currents in theocean. Citrus is grown in these sandyplains, and blond tobacco, aswell as other crops.There is a surprising variety oflandscapes and ecosystems:evergreen forests, including mangrove, beach coasts withswampy vegetation, high reefcoasts and sandy coasts with avegetation of sea grapes, palmtrees and mastic. There is a large profusion oforchids, earth and epiphytes, a total of 16 species, some indigenous and some recently discovered.There are also large amounts of birds, butterflies, mollusks and insect trapping plants. This peninsula has a rich architectural patrimony of theprehispanic period and of theactivity of pirates and corsairs,wrapped in an atmosphere oflegends and histories.
