C4. Teaching and Research
C4.1 Teaching:
My teaching strategy and methodology are centered on teaching the dynamic processes of
physics specifically in applied nuclear sciences. My teaching also based on action learning
process based of the use of the real regional and global problems related to different
disciplines of physics and means of problems solving solutions. The action learning is one of
the educational process by which a person studies his or her own action and experience to
improve performance by solving and finding solutions of some problem related to the
subject. Also, I have used examples to actual global problems in reference to our current
knowledge and designed research for undergraduate and graduate projects. I believe that this
philosophy of teaching has enabled me to reach the students in their understanding the value

of the subject. I always try to provide knowledge to the students at an international level and
encourage them to enjoy learning science through critical thinking enabling them to solve
puzzles and problems related to their team with close guidance while conducting experiments
inspiring and guiding them to exploit their knowledge in the use of available resources
whenever possible. Such mode of active learning has always motivated the student to utilize
valuable information for their future careers. The primary challenge in my teaching approach
is devising new and creative ways to design research project. This approach is intended to
create interest among student so that they are eager to find new means and ideas to their
overall understanding of current problems in our region for possible solutions. In addition my
goal is also for continuous improvement of my courses by incorporating the use of
multimedia including on-line web based applications and use of computer software to
enhance the learning experience of the students. This interactive process of teaching is
perhaps the most rewarding part of my work. I was a co-investigator on a project on virtual
tutoring in physics where an online environment for developing students metacognitive
problem solving skills is practiced in collaboration with college of education as state in
C6.10.

over the last twenty years the radiation monitoring has become the hot topic in the
Gulf Region. I have contributed significantly in establishing in the department a
well-equipped laboratory for Low level Gamma radiation using high purity
Germanium (HPGe) detector. The objectives of the laboratory are 1) To train the
young Omani scientists and 2) to measure the level of radiation (if it exist) in water,

C6. Scholarly Achievements
C6.1 Research:
My undergraduate studies was in general physics science involving interdisciplinary areas of
condensed matter, semiconductor and nuclear physics. My work experience in Sudan Atomic
Energy Commission (SAEC) and the international training and fellowships provided by the
International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) have helped me to define my future research
interest. In the laboratory of SAEA, my work included nuclear instrumentations, XRD/XRF
techniques, Mössbauer spectroscopy, and Low level gamma radiation detection for
environmental studies. I did my master by courses in the field of condensed matter in
addition to graduation experimental project using Mössbauer spectroscopy. In the doctoral
research my focus was related the structural analysis of heme proteins using Mössbauer
spectroscopy Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) Magnetic Susceptibility and X-Ray Diffraction
Techniques. As a result, my master, doctoral research and my independent as well as my
collaborative interdisciplinary research have widened the scope of opportunities for
furthering my research interest as stated below and bared the fruits of internationals
recognition by being invited by several international institutions. This is highly encouraged
by the current SQU regulations .
I was a co-investigator in a strategic project on corrosion. The project resulted in generating a
corrosion map of a wide variety of metals and alloys in Muscat municipality. Currently I am
co-investigator in a TRC project together with Dr. S. El-Shafey, chemistry department,
college of science (see C6.10). The project aims to study the hospital wastewater treatment
using modified carbonaceous sorbents from Omani date palm leaflets. My contribution here
is to measure the level of the radioactivity in the wastewater using gamma ray spectroscopy.
Our final year student were engaged in many projects under my supervision and the output
have been published in the local and international journals. I have a wide international circle
of collaborators e.g. Vienna University (Austria), Lubeck University (Germany), Uppsala
University (Sweden), Khartoum University (Sudan) and Al-Zagazig University (Egypt); for
more details see section C6.9.

C6.2 PUBLICATIONS
My research involves characterizing materials with different specialized techniques. This is
why our group publishes multi-authored papers. In addition to being responsible for
performing and analyzing Mössbauer and magnetic measurements, my expertise in the XRD
and SEM techniques has also been utilized in these publications. Based on Google scholar
metrics, my papers have over 400 citations, h index of 11 and i10 index of 13. The impact
factors of the journals in which I published are listed in Appendix A.
