Succulent SpiralsInstructions

Create a sampler of embroidery designs showcasing Succulent Spirals #12543 embroidery collection. There are 23 rich looking spiral leaves, flowers and circles. Three of the designs are square blocks with interesting spiraling objects. The square blocks work around the outer edges of the sampler framing a combination of designs in the center.

Supplies• OESD embroidery collection Succulent Spirals #12543• Medium weight tear away stabilizer• ½ yd. light green fabric (center)• ¼ yd. pink fabric (outer border strips)• 1 yd. white fabric (outer embroidered blocks)• ⅔ yd. fabric (backing and quilt hanger corners)• ¼ yd. fabric (binding)• ⅔ yd. or 24” square cotton batting• Embroidery threads• Temporary spray adhesive• Double sided fabric tape• Curved safety pins• Thread for piecing

Cut• (8) 10" x 14" white fabric (outer embroidered blocks)• (16) 10" x 14" medium weight tear away stabilizer• (1) 18" x 18" piece light green fabric (center)• (8) 4" x 5 ½" pieces pink fabric (outer border strips)• (1) 24" x 24" fabric (backing)• (2) 4" squares fabric (quilt hanger corners)• (3) 2" strips fabric (binding)

Embroider NOTE: The designs used in the sampler are #12453-09, #12543-13, #12453-14, #12543-18 (ungrouped to use 2

of the 3 designs in embroidery software), #12453-21 (twice), #12453-22 (four) and #12453-23 (twice).• Using temporary spray adhesive, spray between two 10" x 14" pieces of tear away stabilizer and adhere to each

other and to the wrong side of 10" x 14" piece white fabric. Hoop the pieces together. Embroider one of the eight outer block designs (#12453-21, #12453-22 and #12453-23). Remove the fabric from the hoop. Repeat for the remaining outer block designs.

• Trim ¼" away from the seam stitch on each of the eight outer embroidered blocks. Set aside. PHOTO 1

• Arrange the remaining designs in a pleasing manner for the center of the sampler. Stitch the larger design first (#12543-09). Mark the center of the 18" x 18" piece light green fabric.

• Using temporary spray adhesive, spray between two pieces of tear away stabilizer and adhere to each other and to the wrong side of the marked center fabric. Place double sided fabric tape on the wrong side of the inner hoop. Using template in inner hoop,

position onto center mark on fabric, and hoop. Place hoop on the embroidery machine and find center point. Embroider the design. PHOTO 2

• Remove from hoop and remove stabilizer. Repeat for the remaining designs. PHOTO 3

Finishing: ¼" seam allowance• Press. Cut the embroidered piece to 12" x 12"

centering the designs. • Lay out the pieces to create the sampler. PHOTO 4• Right sides together and with the outer embroidered block on

top, stitch the pink strip and embroidered block on the seam stitch of the embroidered block of the first row. Continue stitching the pieces creating a first row. PHOTO 5

• For the second row consisting of two pieced sides on either side of the large center, begin with stitching the pink strip, outer embroidered block and pink strip pieces first. Right sides together and with the outer embroidered block on top, stitch the pink strip and embroidered block and pink strip. Repeat for the other pieced side using the same pieces. Right sides together, stitch the pieced sides to either side of the large center. (Second Row) (Refer to Photo 5).

• Stitch the third row using the remaining pieces and like the first row. (Refer to Photo 5).

• Right sides together, stitch the first row and second row. PHOTO 6

• Right sides together, stitch the first/second section to the third row. (sampler top) PHOTO 7

• Layer a quilt sandwich, by placing back wrong side up, cotton batting, and the sampler top right side up. Use curved safety pins to baste the layers together. PHOTO 8

• Quilt as desired. The sample features free motion quilting using the same color thread as the center and the pink, and stitching in the ditch along the outer embroidered blocks in pink thread.

• Square up the quilt, this is trimming the quilt until the sides are equal. This prepares the quilt for stitching on the binding. PHOTO 9

• Wrong sides together, fold each 4" square (quilt hanger corners) to form a triangle. Press. Pin each one to the back top left and right corners. Baste in place. PHOTO 10

• Stitch on the binding as desired. For stitching on the binding the mitered corner technique was used. PHOTO 11
