Note from the Executive Director

Greetings from Turning Point! 2015 was a great year, but there is still so much work to be done with local youth and their families.

The need in our community for our vital programs and services is great, and in fact, continues to grow each and every year. The youth and families represented by the statistics below are clearly in need of the help and support that only Turning Point can provide.

Our high quality mental health, substance abuse, and educational programs are second to none and have been designed to support the children and families illustrated in the following information:

• 18.3% of families in Larimer County live below the Federal Poverty Level (2014 American Community Survey)

• 13% of children in Larimer County are living in poverty (Colorado Children’s Campaign 3/2015)• 3 in 10 Coloradoans need treatment for mental health or substance abuse disorders• 1 in 5 children have an emotional or mental disorder• In Colorado, suicide is the leading cause of death for young people ages 15-24 (Alliance for

Suicide Prevention of Larimer County 2015)• Use of marijuana by teens, ages 12-17 in Colorado is the 4th highest rate in the nation

The youth and families depicted in these statistics are in need of help and Turning Point’s high quality mental health, substance abuse and educational programs are here to do just that.

Our combined programs have served upwards of 2000 youth, families, and individuals throughout this past year. Turning Point’s dedicated staff of clinicians, therapists, educators and counselors continually challenge themselves to “Turn Lives Around.”

This work would not be possible without your help. Thank you volunteering with us, thank you for participating in our events. Thank you for making both inkind and cash donations to our agency. Most of all, thank you for making a true difference in the lives of local youth. Thank you for caring so much about your community.

On the behalf of our Board of Directors, I thank you for your continued support.

Sincerely,Stephanie Brown, LCSWExecutive Director

PROGRAMS & SERVICES

Gender-Specific Residential TreatmentGender-specific residential treatment programs provide round-the-clock care in home-like environments. We operate a 20-bed boys’ residential home and a separate 14-bed girls’ residential home for youth ages 12-21. Our homes provide a comfortable, home-like atmosphere with ample living spaces and numerous areas for therapy, groups, family visitation, and recreational and leisure activities. Programs utilize evidence-based practices with core components of Behavioral Health, Mental Health & Substance Abuse Treatment, Education and School Credit Recovery, Community Service Projects, and extensive Transition Services.

RECLAIM Short-Term Residential ProgramThis 30-60 day intensive residential drug and alcohol treatment program for adolescents offers treatment plans that focus on stabilization, substance abuse education, recovery, and relapse prevention, as well as mental health issues. The program emphasizes overall health and wellness of the individual and incorporates healthy lifestyle strategies designed to support recovery.

Day Treatment ProgramDay Treatment is designed to provide therapeutic support to clients and their families in the least restrictive, most appropriate setting to ensure that children are secure and protected from harm, that youth progress toward stable, nurturing, and permanent living environments, to minimize out-of-home placements, and to execute successful transitions back into the public school setting. Day Treatment addresses both the educational and therapeutic needs of clients and reduces recidivism or the likelihood of future placement.

Outpatient TherapiesTurning Point offers supportive individual and family therapy and counseling on an outpatient basis. Our experienced therapists specialize in working with youth and family issues including substance abuse, mental health and behavior concerns, and family conflict.

Coaching/MentoringTurning Point offers a goal-directed mentoring program for elementary, middle, and high school students in need of guidance and positive role models. Services may include pro-social

DUI Classes & CounselingTurning Point offers DUI/DWAI classes that use the highly effective Colorado Impaired Driver Education Program (IDEP) curriculum. IDEP is accepted statewide by probation and the courts for all DUI/DWAI offenses.

UA/BA Drug Testing ServicesTurning Point offers drug testing services to the general public as an integral part of our goal to improve the lives of youth and adults in the community. These services play an important role in our continuum of care. Turning Point’s testing center is conveniently located in Fort Collins. We provide affordable and convenient services to businesses, individual, and court ordered clients. All Non-DOT drug screens are lab tested and fast, with results appearing in only 2-3 business days.

and rebuilds futures for youth & their families

when they need it most.

Alicia’s Story**Name has been changed to protect client confidentiality Alicia arrived at Turning Point at the age of 17. She spent three months in our residential treatment program in Fort Collins, Colorado. Despite an extremely supportive family unit, she had struggled with drug use and unsafe relation-ships. At school she had an exorbitant amount of unexcused absences and had been suspended on more than one occasion due to behavior and truancy. During her first week, it seemed as though Alicia went out of her way to break the rules…smoking on campus and shrugging it off with a sense of disdain for the authority figures in the house. She made it clear that she had no intention of working the program. By the end of her second week, however, Alicia’s attitude completely turned around. Her family had visited for a family therapy session, and she made the decision to work FOR the program rather than against it. She dropped the nega-tivity and played a more active role in group therapy and within the milieu. She developed strong working relationships with her treatment team, and as one of the more mature girls in the program, Alicia naturally fell into a position of lead-ership with her peers. She helped to coach and re-direct her peers in situations of thinking errors and problematic behavior. She was also extremely focused on her own treatment and did not hesitate to complete treatment-related work-sheets on a regular basis. Due to her building and eventual consistent positive behavior, Alicia was able to have regularly occurring home passes. While on home passes, she secured two jobs, which she worked while on every pass. In addition, Alicia took the neces-sary steps to get signed up for college classes so that she could begin school after her discharge from Turning Point. Alicia led by example; respected herself, her peers and staff; prioritized her treatment; finalized her high school course requirements at Waverly School; and actively planned for life after Turning Point. Each of these initiatives con-tributed to Alicia’s success. Today Alicia is living at home with her family, enrolled in a local community college, and working part time to support her education. We wish her the best of luck in her future endeavors.
