QUESTION 5 16 MARKS

Your latest obsession is the Maverick Pro Drone – a drone that can fly up to 60km/hr while transmitting fully stabilized, high quality footage. The Maverick Pro Drone can be purchased online today for R20 000.

a) You decide to begin saving for your drone today in order to buy it in 5 years time. You

deposit R12 000 into a savings account today and 3 years later you add R2 000 to your

savings account. The interest rate for the first 3 years is 12% p.a. compounded quarterly

after which it changes 11% p.a. compounded monthly for the remaining 2 years.

1) Calculate the value of your savings 5 years after opening the account by drawing a

timeline. (5)

2) Calculate the effective interest rate during the first 2 years. (3)

3) If the price of the drone increases at the same rate as inflation (8% p.a.), calculate

the price of the drone in 5 years’ time. (3)

4) Will you be able to afford the drone in 5 years’ time with your savings alone?

Calculate the value you will have in excess or that you will still need. (2)

b) Your parents spoil you and buy you the drone for your birthday. What will the value of the

drone be in 5 years’ time if it is purchased today and the rate of straight-line depreciation

is 6,5% p.a. (3)

QUESTION 6 9 MARKS
