STARTING A SMALL BUSINESS IN ELK GROVE VILLAGE, IL

Page 2: Subject guide

While Elk Grove Village is home to an industrial park that

houses 3,600 businesses (the largest in the United States),

patrons come to the library looking for resources on

starting a small business of their own. Many of them have

an associate’s degree or less in terms of education, and are

not interested in reading books published by the Harvard

Business School or the American Management Association.

Others are relatively recent immigrants and seeking

information on how to start a business.

Page 3: Subject guide

these patrons are searching for a handful of

titles to get them started, and that are easy to

read. This list is only intended to pique their

interest, and as they ask questions and gain

experience, we as librarians can guide them to

additional resources.

Consequently,

Lead With a Story: a Guide to Crafting Business Narratives that Captivate, Convince, and Inspire

By: Paul Smith

Stories are valuable tools; they have the

capacity to inspire and make a difference.

Stories are effective because they engage

others at an emotional level. If you can change a

person’s heart, you can change his/her opinion.

Storytelling in the workplace has been

successful for many businesses. Paul Smith

provides over 100 thought provoking examples,

along with exercises and advice to help you craft

a story that conveys your ideas.

in their reference collection. Online databases offer

interactivity, access outside the library building, and are

constantly being updated. The subscription databases listed in

this guide are only a small selection of what is available.

While there are countless websites, subscription databases

contain information that is maintained by the company, and
