    SUBGENUS XII. PLAT Y-LEJEUNEA, S.Elata, arborum ramulis foliisque repens, dein pendula, saturate badia v.

    rufo-badia. Caules 1-6-pollicares et longiores, serpentini flaccidiimequaliter pinnati, vel pinnatim divisi, apice stepe longe sim-plices.

    Folia magna (1.3-2 . 6mm) parum (raro dense) imbricata, siccando fere im-mutata, horizontaliter patula, apice tamen margineque antic() supeincurva, postico plus minus recurvula, unde ex ovato-oblongo ligu-lata videntur, rotundata obtusave, rarius apiculata, integerrima,basi sinuato-complicata ; lobulus parvus turgidus swpe cucullatus ;cellulte majuscules mediocresve subpellucidw pariete incrassato.

    Foliola foliis sat breviora, sepe autem latiora, obovato-orbiculata v.reniformia, rotundata retusulave integerrima. Haustoria e radicellisvalde numerosis fastigiatissaTe ex parte colligatisscopwformia.

    Fl. dioici, raro monoici: ramo brevissimo, foliis minutis 1- (raro pauci-)jugis infra bracteas stipato, insidentes, innovatione brevi parvi-paucifolia semper suffulti. Bracteve minute, foliis 2-4-plo minores,obcordato-bilob ce, complicate, lobis exacte (v. fere) wquiniagnis;bracteola angusta, apice retusa v. tridentata, raro bifidula.

    Perianthia ultra bracteas emersa, f. caulinis tamen semper sat breviora,oblonga obovatave, apice rotundata, retusa, obeordatave, rostellata,valde compressa, margine toto, v. saltem supero, inciso-timbriata-ciliatave, facie postica apicem versus valde huntiliter 1- 2- v. 3-carinulata, carinis spinoso-alatis inermibusve, interdunt papillispilisve sparsa, vel omnino nuda, antice subplana inermia raro sub-spinul osa.

    Androecia v. terminalia, v. ramulo proprio constantia, leptostachya,polyphylla.

    Hab. In arborum truncis ramulisque, imo in foliis vivis, persape aliishepatitis at niuscis irrepentes, sylvas planitiei et montium humiliorumdensas humidas diligentes.

    Distr. Species 8 vel 10 adhuc cognitae mimes Americas tropicse incolas,earum unica (Pl. L. transversalis) etiam in Australia et ins. Hawaiiinventa est, nulla tamen Asiatica. 5 species a meipso lectue per sylvamAmazonicam at Andes inferiores (tam occidentales quam orientales)solum ad alt. 1200m usque, habitant.

    2. P. L. tceniopsis. F. parum imbricata preelonga semicordato-ovato-oblonga, margine antico incurvula, postico valide recurva; lobulus6-plo brevior cucullatus. Foliola subimbricata reniformia longedecurrentia apice retuso recurvula, medio unisulca. Br. lobo anticosubminore. Per. obovato-cuneata, margine supra medium inciso-ciliata, dorso obsolete bicarinata pauciciliataque.

    Badia late dense implexo-cespitosa. Caules 1-2-pollicares, scope totalongitudine matrici arcte adhnrentes, vage subramosi, ramique scopevalde rarnulosi, ramulo perbrevi, paucifolio, y v. neutro, e folii ferecujusque axilla egrediente, eidemque subiequilongo.

    Folia confertissime imbricata late oblique semicordato-ovata, apice validedecurvo rotundata, margine supero incurvulo appressa, infero leniterrecurvulo ante lobulum profunde sinuata; lobulus fere 4-plo breviorovalis subbifidus, segmento inferiore majoreque subrotundo apicecucullato, superiore parvo rhombeo subplano; cellulae parvulce pel-

    ambitu opacn, rotundo-hexagonae, pariete incrassato.Foliola late imbricata foliis fere Eequimagna, sed fere duplo latiora plain

    longa, a basi breviter cuneato-decurrente reniformia, apice lateretusa, margine toto recurvula cellulisque parvis uniseriatis subopacismarginata, basin versus facie interns foveolata, externa umbonata,et ex umbone radicellas fasciatas, apice parrun divergentes pro-ferentia.

    Flores dioici: ramulis brevissimis insidentes quasi-laterales innovationeparva suflulti. Bractem foliis subduplo breviores, obcordato-bilobm,complicatae, lobis submqualibus, v. antico paulo minore, obovato-trapezoideis; bracteola minor oblonga apice bifida bidentatave.

    Obs. The short ramuli are usually female, rarely neuter. In some stemsthey spring from nearly every leaf-axil, and each bears a flower, withonly 1 or 2 (rarely more) pairs of minute leaves beneath it. Adnate tothe outer bract, springs an innovation, at a very acute angle, bearing fewsmallish (but not minute) leaves. The bracts are complicate and soshortly bifid that they are best described as obcordate, with a deep sharpemargination. In the outer bract (which widely imbricates the inner) theupper (antical) lobe is very slightly the smaller, leaving a narrow rim ofthe lower lobe visible all around the free edge, when the two are pressed

    together ; whereas in all other Lejeunem the upper lobe of the bract isalways larger than the lower. The inner bract is either quite symmetrical,having the two lobes exactly equal, or the upper lobe is smaller, as in theouter bract.
