Course of Studies - Contents and Objectives

The course specification for the Bachelor programme in Political and Social Studies provides for aninterdisciplinary and multifunctional course in Social Sciences combining fundamental qualificationsin scientific research with further competences in analysis and special methods. Students acquirea knowledge of Political Theory and Political Philosophy, Comparative Politics and Governance,International Relations, Security, Peace and Conflict Studies, Social Theory and Social Stratification/Social Inequality. Further competences include methodological knowledge (statistical literacy) andpractical skills of empirical social research, statistics, data collection and data analysis in the SocialSciences.

The course objective of the Bachelor programme in Political and Social Studies is to enable students tobe successful in meeting political, social and career-orientated challenges.

Techniques of ordinary least squares regression using statistical software like SPSS, SAS, R, or STATA: deducti-on of hypotheses from theories in social stratification and social inequality; construction of hierarchical models;calculation and interpretation of f-tests and increment f-tests; R2 as a measure of explained variance; t-tests forlinear effects, effects of categorial factors, nonlinear effects, and interaction effects; calculation of conditionalpredicted values; prerequisites of ols regression models; oral and written discussion and presentation of ols-re-gression models


Participants aquire the competency to use techniques of OLS regression modelling in statistical software in orderto test hypotheses deducted from scientific theories and to present findings both in oral and written form in thescientific community.
