The Subaru 4WD Club of Victoria Inc. was originally formed over 30 years ago by an enthusiastic group of Subaru owners. Today the club has expanded to include all Subaru 4WD and AWD vehicles, as well as all other makes of AWD, light 4WD and crossover/soft-roader type vehicles. The club aims to participate in exploration of the Australian countryside without damage to the environment, vehicle or individual. Visitors are most welcome to attend the club’s General Meetings and contact committee members regarding participation in club activities.

The club relies on membership fees to offset its running costs, including insurance. Membership fees are payable each financial year, due after the yearly AGM. Fees for the 2010/2011 year are currently:

Interstate: $90 (Seniors card - $85) ● Single: $100 (Seniors card - $90) Joint/family: $105 - (Seniors card - $90)

(All fees includes affiliation and Insurance: $40) A trip fee of $10 per adult non-member applies (for insurance purposes)

Please contact the membership officer for further information regarding membership, including pro-rata and monthly rates.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Welcome to the September club magazine and another president’s report. It’s looking good for the most part at the moment so let’s hope that the weather is going to be nice to us for the next couple of months. There is plenty in the calendar and much of it will be outdoors so a little bit of fine October weather will be most welcome.

I am sitting here at the farm tonight after making a rushed trip down this afternoon. After suffering through carpal tunnel syndrome for a number of years, thanks to spending too much time at the keyboard, I have finally booked in for surgery, in a few days time. I figured that before I went under the knife I should get down here to do a little more preparation for the 35

th birthday

event. After being at the farm three weekends in a row the Forester can almost find its own way there.

Anyway, as I mentioned earlier, there is plenty happening in the next few weeks and I am hoping to see many of you at the various events coming up. I am hoping to get to the September general meeting and might even give a bit of a presentation of 40 and 80 channel CB radios. I will have with me a couple of units that have been configured to support both channel sets simultaneously, something that is unique in commercial CB radios. We have purchased a couple of these for the club, possibly to be used as loan units.

At the meeting I will try to explain how the new 80 channel radios interoperate with the current 40 channel units and what issues might be seen in convoys containing both types. Come along if you are interested in this subject or if you just want to see me with my hands all strapped up.

Early in October we have the Leisurefest show and we will be participating again with the association. I would normally be heavily involved in the show however this year may be difficult. A number of members have offered their time to be on the stand however a few more would be great, especially for stand setup and pull down. The show runs from Thursday the 6

th to Sunday

the 9th of October with setup on Wednesday or Thursday morning. If you

believe that you can help please let me know as soon as possible. Those attending will get free admission and should have time to have a look around.

The 35th birthday celebration follows Leisurefest on the weekend of October

15th, if you hadn’t heard. Full details are in the trip and social section of this

month’s magazine, including accommodation options at the farm and in the local area. We have aimed to keep the cost to a minimum so hope for a big

Page: 5

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

turnout. Please make sure that you register and pay at the September general meeting or, at latest, before October 1

st so that catering can be organized. For

those of you who have an open fire, a chainsaw and a trailer, you are welcome to collect a load of firewood while you are there. Some freshly fallen trees that will make good firewood for those interested. There is also plenty of smaller material around as well so there should be plenty for everyone.

Last weekend I went to the association’s combined president’s and special general meeting. The required vote to move the association’s AGM to November was taken and passed. The meeting covered the usual association business including reports from the CEO and various board members. Emphasis was placed on a couple of important issues. Overall the association is in good state thanks to recently acquired funding from the state government via DSE. This will allow them to continue with a number of programs such as camp host, MVO tracks and others.

There was a timely warning about the use of snatch straps and the use of them in the bush following a few recent deaths. It has been recommended to only use these as a last resort, especially if there is any concern about appropriate mounting points on both vehicles.

Dob in a hoon is alive and well in the bush with a number of drivers being prosecuted and their cars impounded recently. Interestingly, there is a member of the police traffic unit at Mansfield who is taking great pleasure in booking anyone who comes out of the bush in a muddy vehicle. There are also DSE placed cameras in the bush to record vehicles driving on closed roads or behaving irresponsibly. Don’t forget that hoon behavior in the bush is not in our best interests so be aware of how to report anything you see. Do not approach the offenders but gather whatever information you can get.

The association has resurrected the co-branded membership card and there is hope that an extensive program, including fuel discounts, will be available for the 2012 membership year. In the meantime I have offered our club for a trial of this card so look out for one of these coming your way shortly. These cards can be produced fairly quickly and cheaply, saving a lot of work for Andrew. This will provide significant benefits to all members.

Anyway that’s enough from me for this month. Take care of yourself out there, on the road or in the bush, and I look forward to seeing you all soon.

Damian

LAKE EYRE TRIP:

Saturday 22nd October –Tuesday 1st November (Cup Day)

Trip Leader: Jessica Walsh, [email protected]

I am planning to head to Australia's inland sea this October. It would be great if you could come along. See page 9 for the itinerary.

The trip is dependant on the road conditions and the weather (it has already been put off once). The standard trip requirements as listed on page 10 are the minimum needed, including a full-size spare wheel/tyre, and plenty of drinking water. The plan is to stay in caravan parks for the most part, but we need to be totally self-sufficient just in case. The longest distance between fuel stops is about 400km, but the prices will vary enormously, so you may wish to bring an extra 'jerry'.

If you are thinking of coming and don't have everything on the list, please talk to me.

Please give me an indication at the August meeting if you are thinking of coming along, so I can plan appropriately.

Bear in mind that this trip has been adjusted to meet the Border Track trip, and if you wish to join it in Pinnaroo you will have to check with Peter Bellis as numbers are limited. For those not going on the Border Track, we will be heading home to Melbourne to be there in time for the Cup.

The itinerary is as follows:

CHRISTMAS TRIP

Wednesday 28 – Saturday 31 December

Wonangatta, Victorian High Country Trip Leader: David Wilson

The Wonangatta Valley is one the iconic “must do” 4wd trips. The valley is tranquil with wide open camping areas and a cool stream running along the base of the hills. Patient observers can be rewarded with the sight of a platypus at dusk. The sides of the valley present plenty of challenges for your vehicle, as can the drive in to the valley itself.

Any vehicles on this trip need to be well prepared for some rugged driving.

TRIP & SOCIAL REPORT

GENERAL

Trip Leaders

The club is always on the lookout for trip ideas. If there is somewhere you would like to go and would like to lead a trip there, come and talk to me or a member of the committee.

Any trip suggestions go to the committee to be approved, before being printed in the magazine. The trip needs to be in the magazine for at least two issues, to allow plenty of notice to members. Try to put together a proposal on paper that gives members an idea of what to expect, such as difficulty, distances and any special vehicle preparation required.

Trip leading is a very rewarding way of putting something back into the club, particularly if you have a favourite area you would like to share.

Note: The club has a requirement for prospective trip leaders to have attended at least 4 trips as a member before they can lead a trip themselves.

First Aid Kits

The club has bought two new first aid kits as the old ones were found to be unserviceable. The new kits are available to members to take on club trips.

There is an inventory in each kit in order to keep it up to date. If you use anything from them, no matter how small, please make a note of it so it can be replaced. Whilst these kits are fairly comprehensive, they don't detract from the requirement for all trip participants to have their own personal first aid kit. There are some things that are not in the club kits such as aspirin or paracetamol which you should carry yourself if required.

Training

Whilst I am a qualified driving instructor with work, I am still in the process of being accredited with 4WDVic. Until that occurs any instruction I do is informal, with the proviso that there is no recognition of the training apart from the “getting of wisdom”. That is, I can't issue any certificates.

Regardless of that, if you have any thoughts about training you would like to do to improve your skills, don't hesitate to make a suggestion! You might not be the only one thinking the same thing. If it is not something I am familiar with, hopefully I can find someone who is.

SUBARU NEWS

SUBARU XV CROSSOVER DEBUTS IN FRANKFURT

AUSTRALIAN LAUNCH LIKELY

Source: themotorreport.com.au 14 Sept 11

Subaru's high-riding XV crossover has made its production debut at Frankfurt this week, following its unveiling in con-cept form at April's Shanghai Auto Show.

Based on the new 2012 Impreza, the new jacked-up small Subaru has yet to be confirmed for Australia - although a local launch appears likely.

"XV offers a clear indication of Subaru’s design direction from now on. There’s lots of great new Subaru technology in this sub compact SUV, making it a real fun machine," Subaru Australia MD Nick Senior said.

“We’ll look forward to bringing more XV news to Australia very soon.”

Among the XV-specific features are an unpainted black lower bumper and black wheel arch guards - but the concept's chrome roof rails look to have fallen off.

A new third-generation 2.0 litre boxer-engine sits under the bonnet of the XV, sending 110kW and 196Nm of torque through Subaru's 'symmetrical' all-wheel-drive sys-tem.

Internationally, the XV will be of-fered with either a CVT automatic

transmission with paddle shifts, or a traditional six-speed manual.

Fuel consumption with the manual transmission is listed at 6.9 l/100km for the manual, and 6.6 l/100km for the CVT.

Watch for news on an Australian debut to come in the following months.
