The Subaru 4WD Club of Victoria Inc. was originally formed over 30 years ago by an enthusiastic group of Subaru owners. Today the club has expanded to include all Subaru 4WD and AWD vehicles, as well as all other makes of AWD, light 4WD and crossover/soft-roader type vehicles. The club aims to participate in exploration of the Australian countryside without damage to the environment, vehicle or individual. Visitors are most welcome to attend the club’s General Meetings and contact committee members regarding participation in club activities.

The club relies on membership fees to offset its running costs, including insurance. Membership fees are payable each year, due on 31 May. Fees for the 2014/15 year were agreed at the general meeting in April 2014 and are as follows:

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Welcome to the March Subaru 4WD Club magazine.

I’m writing my report as the Spirit of Tasmania departs Melbourne and heads across Port Philip Bay for Devonport. Jessica’s Tassie Trek is on. Just over two years ago, Jessica, Michael H and I completed a circumnavigation of Tassie. Mostly a touring trip, we completed a circumnavigation exploring a little of the west coast. This time, we’re focusing just on the infamous west coast. Jessica & Sharon, Dale & Jan, Jamie, Bev & I will explore the Arthur Pieman Conservation Area, head south towards Sandy Cape, tackle the challenging Climes Track and then visit Granville Harbour, Strahan and Queenstown, mostly via 4WD tracks. Should be a great trip. We’ll be back for the March meeting to relay stories, so be sure to come along to hear all about our adventure.

This month has been busy for the club with a wide variety of trips and events occurring. Dale and Jan’s Meal and Movie Night was held at the Cameo Cinema (an outdoor cinema) in Belgrave. We all enjoyed a wonderful social evening with dinner at the Reel Café, next door to the cinema. The weather was kind to us and the evening was not too cool either, despite being at the foothill of the Dandenongs. Well done to Dale and Jan for organising a very enjoyable evening.

Also occurring this month was Jamie’s Labor Day Long Weekend Trip down at his great place in Hazelwood South. By all accounts, there was plenty of mud, challenging sections and fun had. I visited just for the Sunday evening in time to hear everyone’s stories and enjoy the night around the campfire. Well done for organising a great weekend for all involved, Jamie.

The other event this month (while the Tassie Trek goes ahead) is Graham & Kerry’s Toolangi Day Trip. I’m sure this turned out to be an excellent adventure for the day. There certainly were good numbers expected to attend, so it will be good to hear how the day went at the March General Meeting. From my perspective, it’s great to see new trip leaders stepping up and taking on the running of a trip.

Just a brief update with regard to the Explore Australia Expo, I have had further discussions with the expo organisers and will have more information to share at the March General Meeting. Your assistance at this event would be greatly appreciated. So, if you could spare a day or a half day to talk with prospective members about how brilliant our club is and the types of activities we undertake, please talk with me directly. PRESIDENT’S REPORT

I’d like to make special mention of Dale and his efforts in purchasing and installing a new, secure cabinet at our meeting room. Dale liaised with the SCTC management to request a small amount of space in the storage room on their premises. This acquisition will work perfectly for our club with pressure taken off committee members to bring in and take home equipment at each meeting. While I think Dale is quite likely the happiest of all members given the amount of stuff he was previously carting to the meeting each month, we are all very grateful, Dale, so thank you.

VICE PRESIDENT REPORT

Chocolates I hope you are managing to sell plenty of chocolates. Or enjoy them! If you have managed to get rid of them, please bring the chocolate money to the next meeting. There are also a few boxes left if you haven’t managed to quell that craving just yet. I will make sure they are at the next meeting so you can be tempted. Multiple memberships I am part of a 4WD Victoria sub-committee looking at how to manage those members who choose to join more than one affiliated club. This is in an effort to eliminate paying the affiliation fee more than once. Can you please let me know if you are in fact a member of more than one club? Or have chosen not to join another, due to the extra cost. I can’t say if there can be a way around paying duplicate fees, but at least it is worth investigating.

Driver Training

Hopefully there will be a good turnout at the working bee later in April to help put the training areas together. Depending how the work goes, there might even be an opportunity to practice a little. Once the work has been done, we will be able to finalise some dates for the training course.

Speaking of training, I will be taking the next step to become a Public instructor, from Club level. The training will occur over the next few months or so. This is part of the Association’s review of the ETU in an effort to get more instructors qualified at a higher level.

Easter Trip - Mansfield Woods Point Road

The Easter Long Weekend Trip will be based from a standing camp at one of the many camp sites along the Mansfield-Woods Point Road. This picturesque area located not too far from Melbourne has some very special places to visit and some excellent four wheel driving.

There’s plenty to see and do across the weekend and how much you do is up to you! Choose an easy drive, a difficult drive, something in between, the lot… or… just sit by the river at camp and relax. There’ll be a little of everything for everyone.

Possible day trips include Mt Terrible, Woods Point, The old slate mine, Granny’s Flat, Big River area, Enoch Point and Gaffney’s Creek.

Working Bee at Woodside

Date:- Saturday 25 – Sunday 26 April 2015

The purpose of this weekend is to be a Working Bee to set up some areas that we will be able to use for Driver Training.

The aim will be to start work early Saturday afternoon to allow people to attend Anzac Day Services before they come.

BYO all food and drinks. The BBQ will be available to use for Saturday Dinner and Sunday Breakfast.

Camping will be available on the property.

Bring :- Shovels, crowbars, rakes and gardening gloves.

Midweek Mungo Meander

I am off to Mungo for a few days at the end of July. Mungo National Park is located in NSW in the Willandra Lakes World Heritage Area. This is a midweek trip to allow for those who work weekends to come along. Some information on the park is here: www.visitmungo.com.au

We will be staying in a Mildura caravan park on Tuesday night, to allow people to arrive at their own leisure. Mildura is 5-6 hours north of Melbourne.

Wednesday will see us heading to Mungo, which is a further two hours north. There is an excellent camping area with toilets and shaded campsites (see fees, above). They have a great interpretive centre to spend the afternoon learning about some of Australia’s oldest inhabitants. From here there is a 70km loop track that passes much the park has to offer, which I plan to do on Thursday. A leisurely pack-up and then head home on Friday.

A walk to watch the sunset on the Walls of China is also not to be missed, which we will do either or both nights depending on the weather.

water and food. Extra fuel won’t be necessary if you fill up in Mildura. Pack some warm clothes, as this is desert country and it can get very cold at night. (If the nights are clear, it is a star gazers paradise).

This year Four Wheel Drive Victoria celebrates its 40th anniversary.

To celebrate we are staging a weekend of celebration, fun and friendship.

WHERE: Mansfield in the Victoria High Country.

WHEN: Queen’s Birthday weekend - Friday 5 - Monday 8 June 2015.

Limited camp sites are available at the Mansfield Showgrounds.

TRIP REPORTS

Meal and Movie Night, Belgrave, 27th

February 2015 Like last year at the Cameo the weather was kind to us – not too hot, a little chilly, nice and dry – but with a threatening thunderstorm that fortunately never eventuated.

The Reel Cafe is pleasantly located right beside the original Cameo Cinema, partially occupying part of the original cinema foyer. The main dining area occupies the original lane way beside the cinema; cosy but not too much so. The meals, as usual, for the cafe were up to their high standard and enjoyed by all 15 of us who could make it that early.

The night was cooling as we collected our deck chairs and headphones and set ourselves up in front of the screen. As it was a cool night and we were expecting the cinema not to be too busy, but the movie was popular and so it was good to see plenty of patronage. Many of us wrapped ourselves in blankets and settled in to enjoy “The Second Best Marigold Hotel” starring Maggie Smith and Judi Dench amongst some other notables.

Jamie, and Charles and Paula could not make it in time for the dinner but nevertheless were there in time for the beginning of the movie. The movie was enjoyed by all and lived up to its predecessor in quality and entertainment.

TRIP REPORTS

An interesting and unusual experience was to periodically see, below the screen and through the bushes, the Belgrave train passing one way or the other. This is because the outdoor cinema backs up against the railway reserve.

However all good things come to an end so after packing up our blankets and pillows and returning our chairs and headphones, we all said our goodbyes and went our separate ways.

SUV pioneer Subaru has plugged a gap in the line-up of its popular Forester with an automatic diesel variant. The Japanese brand has also taken the knife to its best-selling model, slashing prices by up to $3500 as it aims to consolidate the Forester’s position in an increasingly crowded market. It has had a manual diesel variant for some time, but Subaru believes an auto diesel could add up to 200 sales a month, inching it closer to the second-placed Toyota RAV4 in the sales race. The auto is a continuously variable transmission (CVT) which differs from conventional autos in that it doesn’t actually shift gears. Unlike other CVT’s which can sound thrashy and feel sloppy, the Subaru version is one of the best available. It feels more like a conventional auto because it has seven “steps” that feel like gearshifts. If you’re light on the throttle it feels like a normal CVT, but if you apply more than 65 per cent throttle it will “shift” to another step. Engineers have also revised the 2.0-litre diesel, bringing it in line with strict Euro6 emissions regulations.

VALUE

All models add features and drop in price by up to $3500. That’s bad new if you’ve just bought a Forester, but enticing for prospective buyers. The base petrol manual 2.0i Forester is now $29,990 (down $2500) and the range-topping turbo XT Premium is $47,990 (down $1500). Pay $33,490 for the diesel manual, the 2.0DL, with the CVT adding $2000. Opt for the 2.0DS model with leather and plenty of other goodies and the prices are $39,490 (down $3500) and $41,490 respectively. But - and this is a big issue - neither diesel is available with Subaru’s potentially lifesaving EyeSight setup, which uses cameras at the front of the car to detect obstacles and apply the brakes if it senses an imminent collision. The diesels also don’t get fuel-saving stop-start technology, which shuts off the engine when the car is stationary at traffic lights, for example. A sore point with Forester in the past - its cheap interior - is addressed with a premium look, more soft-feel surfaces, smoother operating and better looking switches and prettier fascia materials and instruments. Capping it all is an excellent seven-inch infotainment touchscreen with connections to apps such as Pandora radio. All Foresters now have one-touch blinkers, daytime running lights and alloy wheels, including a full-size spare.

DRIVING

We had a good crack at both grades of the CVT diesel on Tasmanian C-roads including dirt and gravel - an environment perfectly suited to the engine and transmission. Paddle shifters enable sportier shifting but are superfluous because the engine has so much grunt low down - 350Nm at just 1600rpm.

Unlike most diesels, the engine spins freely, Subaru has also done a good job of minimising noise or vibration in the cabin. We didn’t worry about the transmission at all - because of it unobtrusive operation. This vehicle is a “push-and-go” proposition. Come to a hill, push the throttle a bit more, come to some corners, back off, then plant it on the run-out. Better yet is the ride quality. Foresters have always been strong in this area, and subtle tweaks mean the car is even better at isolating occupants from rough roads while keeping planted though corners. The Forester can be driven in pretty much any mode you choose from cruising on the freeway to tackling winding bitumen and scooting over corrugated gravel roads. The breaks and steering also inspire confidence, as do the five-start safety package and the full-time-all-wheel drive. But we don’t like the look of it much. When is Subaru going to bite the bullet and hire a talented designer - as Kia did a few years ago? The luggage area is a decent size, the seats are comfortable and the driving position has ample adjustment.

VERDICT

This is a car you could confidently buy now and still be driving in a decade after using it every day - it has that rock-solid reliable feel. The ride abets long days of touring and the economical engine should top 1000km on one tank. The diesel is a cracker - and the better with CVT. We’d have one in a blink as a practical, knockabout, reliable, Japanese-built car.

STANDARD TRIP EQUIPMENT & RECOVERY GEAR

The aim of all Subaru 4WD Club of Victoria Inc. trips is to have an enjoyable experience in the bush, increasing 4WDing skills and experience, whilst maintaining the highest regard for the safety of individuals, the vehicle and the environment. As a driver you have ultimate responsibility for the safety of your passengers and vehicle. It is the responsibility of any participating driver to contact individual trip leaders for clarification of individual trip requirements and standards.

Financial members are encouraged to participate in as many trips as possible to increase confidence and experience. Visitors are welcome subject to the payment of the appropriate levy to cover insurance, but after two visits, should consider membership. Non-financial members are not covered by insurance and may not

participate until payment is received.

Individual drivers with concerns or queries regarding their vehicle and the trip standard should contact relevant trip leaders. The Subaru 4WD Club of Victoria Inc. recommends that each vehicle carry the following items of equipment on every trip:

a) Personal details form as specified by FWDV, copy to Trip Leader

b) Two Rated D- Shackles (minimum 3.2t);

c) Rated “Snatch’em” Strap;

d) Recovery Points, Front & Rear; plus optional bridle strap, according to

vehicle design;

e) AM (27Mhz) Channel 5 or UHF (477Mhz) Channel 16 CB Radio;

f) Fire Extinguisher, accessible to the driver;

g) Spare Tyre (full size);

h) Jack and Wheel Brace, or equivalent;

i) Emergency Supplies (matches, food, water and clothing);

j) Sufficient Fuel, Oil and Water for the trip and delays;

k) A Tyre Pressure Gauge; Compressor (according to the trip)

l) An Axe, Bow or Chain saw;

m) A Sturdy Shovel (collapsible shovels are no good);

n) Spare Parts (appropriate to the nature of the Trip);

o) A Tool Kit;

p) Personal First Aid Kit;

q) The Vehicle Manual.

Any vehicle not carrying at least the first five (5) items of equipment should contact the individual Trip Leader before leaving. Any Club member unsure about any of the items of equipment listed above are advised to contact the Trip and Social Co-ordinator or the Trip Leader concerned.

All Trip Leaders carry a complete First Aid Kit in case of emergency. All non-emergency medical needs are expected to be meet by individuals own medical supplies.

around the Woodside area. A working bee will be required to do some setup work.

7.9 President ● The club has confirmed with 4WD-TV as to the club’s interest to

have a stand at the up-coming 4WD show at the Melbourne showgrounds.

8.1 It is Edith’s birthday today. 8.2 Need some volunteers to help with tonight’s supper. 8.3 4WD signage erected at Licola – feedback from the locals is that it is

a great success, with many people stopping to take a photograph of them. The club is always welcomed back at Licola.

8.4 Rick mentioned that when recently checking the radiator in his wife’s car, he took the radiator cap off and it came off in many pieces. Moral of the story – take of the radiator cap when checking the radiator.

the current policy of the trip leader assessing visitors and their vehi-cles prior to the trip remains in place. It would be up to the trip leader to contact visitors prior to a trip to get an understanding of the visitor’s 4wd experience and vehicle’s capability.

handbook, recovery of cost of snatch strap, other incidental costs, etc.

RESOLUTION The committee resolved that the price of the four wheel driver driving course being run by the club for members of the club be in the vicinity of $50.

RESOLUTION The committee resolved to negotiate an agreement with the Stock Superannuation Fund with regards to access to the farm property of the Fund.

● Responding to mechanical queries regarding Subarus – the club needs to develop a policy regarding giving advice regarding me-chanical modifications, etc, to Subarus.

● The club’s website needs to be updated in terms of content. It is currently a “work in progress”.

7.2 Community Involvement ● Nothing to report.

7.3 Constitution Review ● Nothing to report.

8. Committee Succession Planning

● Indication was sought from committee members as to what their inten-tions are regarding to being on the committee after the next AGm.

9. General Business

● Chair of committee meetings – should it remain with the host of the meeting or should it swap to someone else – eg. club president or the person who has come the furthers distance? It was agreed that the chairing of the committee meeting revert to the club president.

● Multiple Club memberships – a working group is looking at the issue of 4WD club members belonging to multiple clubs having to pay multiple 4WD Victoria affiliation fees.

● 4WD Track Classification Training Course – no-one from the club at-tended the recent course (even though three were registered to attend) due to the late notice of the course location.

● Old club website – an old website created by Chris Redden is still ac-cessible/discoverable via Google. Jean will contact Robyn, his wife.

● Photographic competition – the number of entries were a bit limited this year. Does the club pursue with the competition? Should there be a first and second prize for each category? Should it be restricted to only the past 12 months? To be discussed further at the next committee meeting.
