A competition held by Institut Teknologi SepuluhNovember in 14-16 November 2011

The aim of this competition is the accurate design of

the reaction to achieve a certain distance, forexample by adjustment of a specific reactant.

To design and construct a car that is powered with achemical energy source that will carry a certain loadto a given distance and stop. The car will be judged

based on the combination of completion of a definedtask, design creativity, and issues related to safety, environment and health as the model car handleschemical fuel.

All undergraduates is open forIndonesian (public universities and private

universities) and international universitiesstudents of chemical and processengineering, chemistry, and further studycourses are invited to contribute their

know-how, creativity and ability to work ina team to succeed the provided task.

The Chem-E-Carcompetition consists oftwo parts, the poster presentation and the

race. This set of rules describes theprocedure of the competition as well as thedetermination of the winning team.

Subali is a car with pressured gas as the energy source. The design of this car made as light as possible toaccommodate the acceleration to be fast and doesnt needa large number of energy without leave the safetyrequirement.

Subali accelerates with energy from gas-producing

reaction that will enter the pneumatic-system and then thepneumatic-system will rotate the wheel. We use reactionfrom acetic acid 20% and excess sodium bicarbonate, thisreaction will produce CO2 gas. The amount of CO2 in thereaction tank make the pressure inside the reactor becamehigher than pressure around the pneumatic-system then

the gas will flow into the pneumatic-system. The car stopsif the pressure inside reactor same as the pressure aroundthe pneumatic-system or in the other words the carautomatically stops if there no more reactants.

ar DesignThe Subali car is a unique car that has

futuristic model. This car has cool design, moreover this car designed with toughmaterial in order to make this car safe fromany possible hazard.

List of used chemicalsAcetic acid 20 %

    Amount needed: 600 mlSodium bicarbonate.

Vessel 1 filled with solid sodium bicarbonate and vessel 2filled with acetic acid 20%. Simultaneously with opening ofthe valve 3, acetic acid and sodium bicarbonate react andbuild pressure in vessel 1 and vessel 2. When the carwill be run, the valve 4 is opened. Then the CO2 thatproduced from the reaction will flow from vessel 2 to

pneumatic-system through a pipe because the pressuredifference is large enough, then the gas will rotatethe pneumatic-system where the pneumatic-systemconnected to the wheel-axle and then will rotatethe wheel. The wheel will rotate since there flowing gasthrough the pneumatic-system. In this case the car will

stop when there are no more reactants. So the variables to meet the requirements (distance andload) are the amount of reactants to be inserted.

Possible emissionsThis car is relatively a safe and green car. The emission isonly CO2 gas, whereas as we know that CO2 is notdangerous at low amount. Acetic acid with

the concentrations below 25% does not form a vapor sothat the exit gas is not contaminated with acids.

Hazardous hemicalChemical substances in this car are acetic acid and sodiumbicarbonate. Hazardous chemical in this car is acetic acidthat classified corrosive and flammable. Sodiumbicarbonate is not classified as hazardous chemical.

Disposal of used materialsBoth acetic acid and sodium bicarbonate are disposed into

labeled container that has been prepared before furtherhandling
