create both a top and bot-tom for recreations of Jennifer Lawrence's Dior gown, as well as the amaz-ing red cape-dress Lu-pita Nyong'O wore to the Golden Globes. Fierce. (Just to offer a point for comparison, when I was four I would have prob-ably eaten the paper in-stead of making it into an outfit; I was especially fond of the taste of heavy construction paper.)According to Angie, she's not the one doing all the work:The ideas are pretty much a 50/50 split, but May-hem constructs a lot more than most people would probably believe. That's one of the best things about this project, I see her learn-

ing new skills every sin-gle day. At this point, she knows exactly how many sheets of construction paper she needs to make herself a top and a bottom. She can lay the entire thing out and tape it together all by her-self. Definitely, the more complex designs have more of my time invested, but she's literally always beside me learning something new if she's not tearing or tap-ing or gluing while I am.

The design duo post the finished products to Ins-tagram, where Mayhem's gowns are displayed next to the original dresses and celebrities who wore

Things You Did Not Know About WaxingBeauty & Health Priyanka GhuraBeauty Editor, POPxo A waxing session is definitely not on our list of favourite activities. But how else can we rock those cute tank tops and little dresses? You’ve been making those monthly appointments to get smooth, hairless arms and legs for years, but there are so many things you still don’t know about waxing. Don’t believe us? Here are our 7 essential waxing facts!

1. Don’t Exfoliate Post-Wax Waxing is a form of exfoliation for your skin and leaves it extra sensitive than usual. You should definitely avoid using scrubs and drying products after a waxing session, or else it can lead to burning and redness.

2. “That” Time of The Month Isn’t The Best Time

Your premenstrual and menstrual phase are not the time to go for a wax. This is the time when your body is most sensitive, which means waxing will be more painful than ever before. Schedule your appointments before your PMS or after you finish your periods for a less-unpleasant situation.

3. No Hot ShowersYour freshly waxed skin is super sensitive and more prone to bacterial infections. Make sure to avoid hot baths as well as tight clothes for at least 24 hours after your appointment. It’s important to let your skin breathe and recover from all the yanking and pulling of hair.

Page 33: Stylish world

STYLISH WORLD

March 2015 33

4. Razors Aren’t A Good Idea

Besides getting in the way of giving you super smooth skin (more like prickly stubble), shaving also causes even more pain at your next waxing appointment. That’s because shaving makes your hair blunt and grow back thicker and coarser. And we all know that thicker hair means more painful waxing sessions. Try and avoid shaving as much as you can and wait for 2 weeks afterwards to get waxed so your hair has grown enough to come off easily

5. Don’t Skip The SPF We just told you that waxing is a form of exfoliation, which means it helps peel away dead skin, leaving your skin pretty raw. Don’t ever make the mistake of leaving the salon without slathering on some sun-screen after your wax since your skin is even more prone to sun damage after your appointment. Please!

6. Regular Waxing Means Less Pain

Page 34: Stylish world

March 2015

STYLISH WORLD

34

The longer you wait in between appointments, the more painful it will be. Your hair thins over time, thanks to waxing regularly, which will result in less pain. If you wait for your hair to grow super-long, you’re just setting yourself up for a hellish experience. Trust us, it’s smarter to make your waxing appointment every 3-4 weeks religiously if you want to experience the least amount of pain possible.

7. Give That Workout A Miss Skip that gym sesh, or zumba class post your waxing appointment as sweating increases the risk of bacte-ria spreading on your now-smooth, extra sensitive skin. Also forget about wearing tight clothes and spandex after your wax, since your skin needs to breathe – it’s time for your baggiest pair of track-pants.

your palm with a drop of a gel bronzer.• Yourfoundationistoodark: This issue is trickier to fix and in the end may be unsolvable. You can try to dilute the colour by mixing it with an untinted mois-turiser in your hand before apply-ing. Unfortunately, if that doesn’t work, you’ll just have to save that base for the summer or cut your losses and toss it.• Yourblushistoobright:Layering is key here. I would first apply a blush that’s more neutral and then add the brighter colour on top to give yourself just a little pop of colour.• Yourblushistoodull:Doexactly what you would do if your blush were too bright; apply the less lively shade first and then hit your cheeks again with a hint of the more vibrant one.• Yourlipstickistoobright:One of the most important make-up lessons I’ve ever learned is that beige lipstick needs to be a main-stay in everyone’s makeup bag. You can apply it under any overly vivid lip colour to instantly tone it down. The recipe is up to you. The more beige you apply, the more understated the colour becomes.• Youreyeshadowistoointense: You can first try to tone it down by wearing a taupe-toned shadow underneath. But if that doesn’t work, I recommend break-ing out your flat eyeliner brush and using it as a liner.

You’re going from day-to-night: • Youreverydayeyeshadow

W hen I was first starting out as a makeup artist, I had to put together

a complete kit of products that would work for anyone I made up. I went to the most expensive department store in town and bought the most expensive make-up I could find – assuming that a high a price would guarantee an amazing product.

I couldn’t have been more wrong. So much of what I bought was completely un-wearable. Since every penny counted, I had to learn how to layer and mix and match to create products that would enhance all skin tones. In fact, that’s what most makeup art-ists do to cut down on the amount of products they have to keep in their cases. So before you toss out your disappointments, pass them on to a friend, or resign yourself to only sticking with a few tried and true favourites. Here are my secrets to turning your not so perfect products into bone fide success stories.

If you bought the wrong shade: • Yourfoundationistoolight: Whether your shade is too light for your complexion or too pink for your skin tone, you can make it warmer and deeper with bronzing powder or gel. If the shade is just slightly off, simply dust powder bronzer onto your cheeks, forehead, nose, and chin, then blend well. If you need to make it even deeper, mix a small amount of the foundation into

needs to be more dramatic: Go black – as in eyeliner. Whether you use a gel, liquid, pencil, or powder, lining your eyes close to the lashes with a black liner will instantly up your glamour quo-tient. I like to use a brown liner on my lower lids, though; it’s less severe and really helps to open up your eyes• Yourblushistoobasic:Now’s the time to shine. Top your blush with a dab of a shimmer cream, powder, or lotion in the same colour family.• Yourlipstickistoosub-tle: You can either line and fill in lips with a lip liner that’s slightly darker, or layer on a deeper ver-sion of gloss.

Winter’s Coming: • Yourfoundationistoodrying: To add moisture to your skin without diluting the pigment and coverage of your foundation, it’s best to simply wear a richer cream or lotion than the one you used in the summer, instead of mixing the two together.• Yourbronzerhastoomuch shimmer: While you may have been sweeping it all over your face in the sunny weather, when your skin gets paler, it’s more flattering to wear an iri-descent bronzer just the way you would your blush – only on the apples of your cheeks.• Youreyeshadowistoocandy coloured: Pastels can look great on skin with a summer glow but come the winter they just look “off ” somehow. To turn a baby

blue into a more winter-friendly slate, first sweep on either a bone or a white eye shadow. To add moisture to your skin without diluting the pigment and coverage of your foundation, it’s best to simply wear a richer cream or lotion than the one you used in the summer, instead of mixing the two together

The Beauty of Cream Blush

Cream blush is a great alternative to powder for the transition into winter. It can easily be applied with the fingers and leaves you looking dewy and flushed, as if the cold weather naturally brought the color to your cheeks. The prospect of actu-ally using one can be a little daunting—their color can look so concentrated in the packag-ing, but once blended on the skin, they tend to take on a beautiful tone. Most cream blushes also do double duty and can serve as a lip color. Here are some great cream blush picks to ensure you never get it wrong.

Most asked Beauty question

Q: What is the best way to cover fine lines?

A: Don’t think of your lines as a negative. I think they’re beauti-ful and we get them from living, laughing, expressing ourselves. You can’t really cover lines, so focus on making your skin look smooth and even. The best way to do this is with a rich face moisturiser, which will help plump up skin and make lines look less obvious. Use cream formulas of concealer, founda-tion, and blush; they’ll glide over your skin instead of settling and collecting in the lines. If you’ve got fine lines around your eyes, draw attention away from them by lining your eyes to make your eyes stand out. A touch of blush on cheeks makes you look fresh and pretty. Use a rich lip balm (or even your eye cream) to hydrate lines around the lips. To keep lip-stick from feathering, line your lips after applying your lipstick.

Q: What can I do to make my eyeshadow last longer than lunchtime?

A: Don’t apply eye cream on your lids in the morning – the added emollients in the cream will cause any makeup you ap-ply afterwards to slip right off. Before applying shadow, prime

your lids by pressing on face powder. This creates a base for the shadow to stick to. And go for powder shadow formulas, which are longer-lasting than oil-based cream shadows.

Q: I like my makeup very natural and have never used foundation. Is it really “a must” to use and what other makeup items are key to looking great without having to do too much?

A: If I could only own one piece of makeup, it would be concealer. A yellow-toned concealer (one shade lighter than your founda-tion) works wonders on dark circles and instantly brightens and lifts your face. Foundation seems too fussy for you, so try tinted moisturiser instead. It’s super sheer and has just enough colour to even out any redness. I think everyone looks prettier with blush on, so try a shade that looks like your cheeks after a workout.

Q: How do you pick the right blush for your skin tone? I think I look better in pinks but people tell me the coral/orange colours look better on me. Since I co-ordinate my lipstick with this, it affects that choice too.

A: If you have porcelain skin, use pale pink or pastel apricot blush.

Fair skin looks good in sandy pink tones. Go for tawny brownish pinks if you have medium skin. Dark skin looks good in plum, golden brown, and deep rose. Use deep red or bronzer on very dark skin.

Q: I use a lip pencil since I have thin lips and lipstick just doesn’t show without it. But I can never seem to get the outline right. My lips are a little lopsided and unless I “widen” certain parts with the pencil, I look ridiculous. Should I follow my own lip line or just how do you apply a lip pencil?

A: Start by making sure that your lip pencil is the same shade as your lips. When you line, your best bet is always to follow your natural lip line. Resist the urge to draw in bigger lips – it’ll look fake
