BEHINDTHESCENECOVER GIRL KACI AITCHISON

by Darcy CamdenOur cover shoot at Rosemary Wagner’s photography studio started at high noon on a Tuesday, but cover girl Kaci Aitchison arrived an hour early for hair and make-up with Beauty Editor Tiffany Lowry. While most of the style team was pounding double lattes, Kaci was chipper and lively—in fact, you’d never guess she had already worked a full day, having been on Q-13 FOX News This Morning since 6am (and

her alarm went off earlier than we could even comprehend). Thankfully, Kaci’s energy is contagious. Even though this was Kaci’s first editorial photo shoot, she was a total pro in front of the lens. She also generously and honestly answered all of Editorial Director Carol Lin’s questions, offering personal advice and philosophies about style. We also learned that, in addition to her television broadcasting skills, Kaci is an improv comedian, a yogi and the lead singer of a rock band—impressive! We think you’ll enjoy getting know her better (Style Spotlight, page 15), we sure did!

FROM YOUR STYLISTEDITOR-IN-CHIEF DARCY CAMDEN Don’t get me wrong, I love the holidays--I’m actually a crazy Christmas enthusiast who starts playing Bing Crosby carols before (yes, before) Thanksgiving, and I literally cannot put up enough white twinkly lights--but I know the holiday months can be a stressful blur of shopping lists, crowded malls and jammed-packed parking lots. As stylists, it’s our job to go shopping almost every day of the year. Not to brag, but we’re pretty stealth shoppers; we know the quickest route from Northgate to Ballard, we know exactly how long it should take to drive from Alderwood to The Bravern, and we are often waiting with a Starbucks and a smile when the manager of Banana

Republic unlocks the doors in the morning so we can make our purchases quickly without standing in line. And even though we know all the tricks, our job gets a lot harder in November and December. Every “quick” shopping errand is a multi-hour affair that ends in exhausted frustration and/or a very tall glass of wine. The point is: we feel your pain. Shopping this time of year is hard. Nevertheless, here are some of our tips to help you be successful in the stores this season:1. Go shopping in the middle of the

week. Wednesday and Thursday are the best days of the week to find sales (and you’ll avoid the weekend rush).

2. Make a list before you go to the store. This seems obvious, but most of our clients admit they don’t actually take the time to write out everything they want to buy (and they end up needing to make a second trip).

3. Go alone whenever possible. 4. Call ahead to see if the store has

what you’re looking for, ask them to hold it for you.

5. Remember to be kind and show appreciation to salespeople. The holidays are hard for them, too!

Wishing everyone a safe and stylish holiday season! Darcy Camden @darcycamden

Your bra is the first thing you put on in the morning, so it is truly the foundation of good style. The right bra will help your clothes fit better and make you look 10-15 pounds slimmer, while the wrong bra will can cause back problems, breast sagging and bad posture (not to mention the annoyance factor). We recently found out eight out of 10 women are wearing the wrong bra, so here are the most common questions (and stylist-approved answers) related to bra wear and care.

When it comes to bras, what is considered a good fit? The bra cup should be smooth against your breast and the bottom band should be parallel in the front and back (i.e. the bottom band of your bra should not be curved up or down on your back). To ensure the fit is not too tight, make sure you can run one finger along the front band. Overall, it should feel like it is providing good support and is comfortable. If your bra is uncomfortable, you’re probably wearing the wrong size.

How many bras should I own and how often should I rotate wearing them? Try not to wear the same bra two days in a row, because it wears out the

elasticity and lessens the support. It is a good idea to own about six bras (but you don’t need many more) so you can rotate and allow each bra to rest periodically.

How often should I wash my bras? A bra should be worn no more than twice between each wash.

What is the best way to wash my bras? Your bras will last twice as long if you wash them by hand rather than in the washing machine. If you insist on machine wash, use cold water and the delicate cycle, and put your bras in a lingerie bag ($12, amazon.com). Use Woolite, and never put a bra in the dryer as it will destroy the wiring, shape and elasticity.

How long should I keep my bra? A well-cared-for bra well can last several years. Get rid of bras that are more than four years old.

How do I know when to throw out a bra? When your bra discolors, loses its shape or shows any signs of torn fabric, you should throw it out. If you have gained or lost weight and the tightest hook is not tight enough, that would also be a good indicator to retire the bra.

BESTDRESSEDHOW TO LOOK AND FEEL YOUR BEST ON A “BLAH” DAY

By Carol Lin and Darcy Camden

We’ve all been there: the morning alarm clock goes off and the sky is dark, the temperature is freezing and your mood is gloomy. You don’t want to face the day, and getting dressed seems impossible. While you can’t control the weather outside, you can control what you wear; and the outfit you select can have a huge impact on your overall mood. Here are five tips to help you dress with style and confidence to conquer your workday.

TIP #1: Step into a pair of heels. On dreary mornings, it’s tempting to wear flats. However, a 2-3” heel help you stand up straighter, making you appear more confident, and the boost from a heel will make you look about 10 pounds slimmer. If the idea of running around in high stilettos makes you cringe, opt for a wedge heel. Many of our clients tell us t h e y a r e a b l e t o w e a r w e d g e s comfortably for up to 10 hours.

TIP #2: Cover up with a blazer – When the air is chilly, it’s tempting to reach for your favorite oversized cozy sweater (the closest thing to a Snuggie you can wear at work). Instead, reach for a blazer. A fitted blazer not only provides warmth and coverage, it makes you look polished and put-together. We think everyone should have a great go-to black blazer to wear with slacks, skirts, dresses and jeans.

TIP #3: Don a pony tail. The chicest solution for a bad hair day is a simple ponytail. Spend a moment teasing the crown of your hair to add lift, then pull your hair back and secure with an elastic that matches your hair color. Divide your ponytail into three sections and wrap each section around the barrel of your curling iron; hold for 10 seconds (should take less than a minute in total). Pulling your hair back in this way will elongate your neck and face and make your cheekbones look more pronounced (bonus: your hair will be secured in the wind and rain).

TIP #4: Add one piece of statement jewelry. Keep your favorite jewelry in a visible and easy-to-reach place. We tell our clients never to leave home without a piece of jewelry (note: it’s always better to have one strong statement piece than several smaller pieces). A great piece of jewelry will make your outfit seem “finished” and draw lots of compliments.

TIP #5: Paint your lips red. A bright lip communicates power and confidence. It also brightens your complexion, draws attention away from any blemish or imperfection (ahem, tired eyes and dark circles) and makes your teeth look whiter. It’s an instant pick-me-up.

HOTHAIRTRENDSSEATTLE STYLIST NANEALANI SHARES THE TOP TRENDS FROM NY FASHION WEEK

Nanealani, a top stylist at Bocz Salon in downtown Seattle, was granted the opportunity to attend 2012 New York Fashion Week and work alongside celebrity hairstylist Oribe and his stellar team. Together, they created beautiful runway hair for top designers like Skaist Taylor, Rad Hourani and Perry Ellis. The pace of NY Fashion Week was dizzying, but Nanealani managed to extract a few key hair trends based upon her own work and observations at the Spring/Summer 2013 shows. While straight-off-the-runway hair doesn’t always translate to the real world, Nanealani shares a few manageable style interpretations that any Seattleite can pull off. Here she describes the top trends in her own words:

TREND #1 Natural Texture

“The Skaist Tailor show featured big, beautiful frizzy hair reminiscent of a proper 70’s afro. This might be a bit extreme for us here in Seattle, but the message was clear. It’s all about hair that is free, showcasing

natural texture--something that isn’t too polished. It’s time to become comfortable with your hair and its texture once again. Scrunch it, air dry it, make it less ‘perfect,’ work with it in its natural state and allow it to be what it is. This is a great trend for Seattle, given our relaxed outlook and plentiful drizzle. No more flat ironing or trying to create the perfect curl; this fall, wear it wavy, a little frizzy and work with what you have.”

TREND #2 Sleek Low Pony

“On the opposite end of the spectrum, the hair we created at the Rad Hourani show was a super sleek, low ponytail with a very blunt end. Ponytails have been in the middle or very high in recent years, but the low pony is back. While a blunt edge might be a bit much, most of us can achieve a super sleek look by drying and slicking back our hair section by section to ensure each portion lies flat on the next.

“Is there a ‘right’ way to pop a pimple?” --M.G., age 28

Absolutely. Many estheticians believe that only skin care professionals should do extractions (aka pimple popping), but I feel that it is important for individuals to do at-home extractions, because extracting blemishes can actually help begin the healing process and discourage engorged pores.

The best time to perform extractions is after a warm, steamy shower. The steam will open the pores and prepare them for the extraction process. Thoroughly cleanse and exfoliate your hands paying special attention to washing out any bacteria that may be trapped under your nails. After the shower pat your face dry. Wrap a clean tissue around each index finger. Apply gentle but assertive pressure to the sides of the blemish. If the pimple is ready, it will extract easily; if not, leave it alone. Too much pressure can cause skin trauma and scarring. Follow the extraction session by using a pore-refining toner. My personal favorite is the Skinceuticals Equalizing Toner. Apply sparingly before using serum or moisturizer.

It is crucial to only extract blackheads or white heads. Never attempt to extract cystic or nodular acne (you know, the ones that feel like a bruise and seem to have their own heartbeat). Squeezing these blemishes will cause a deeper and more painful infection. The best way to treat this type of breakout is to spot treat with a clay mask, like the Clarifying Facial Mask from Cell Renewal Systems. Use a Q-Tip to dab a modest amount on to the inflamed area and go to sleep with the product on. The drawing power of the clay will help dry out the blemish and expedite healing.

“Sometimes I go sleep without washing my face. How bad is that?”--T.S., age 37

The world isn’t going to end if you fall asleep without removing your makeup. However, wearing foundation, powder and blush clogs the pores on our faces trapping sweat and skin oil in our follicles. In addition, when you sleep with your makeup on, the film from your cosmetics can result in surface dehydration and irritation. Not to mention you look like a hot mess in the morning. (Bottom line: you should always try to wash your face before going to bed).

“Can you recommend a great at-home facial mask? And how often should I use it? I don't have time to get to the spa, but I want to pamper my skin at home”--C.G., age 43

Not everyone has time to come to the spa, so a good home care regimen is crucial to maintaining a healthy, glowing complexion. An excellent at-home treatment is the Multivitamin Power Recovery Masque from Dermalogica. For best results, use weekly after cleansing. Make sure to apply the masque to your neck and décolletage area as well as your face, this will support these delicate areas through the aging process and prevent the skin from prematurely sagging.

Story by Carol LinPhotos by Rosemary Wagner

It sounds more like a cocktail party than a photo shoot: the giggles and sounds of animated story-telling echoing from Rosemary Wagner’s studio in Seattle’s historic Pioneer Square prove that Kaci Aitchison knows how to have a good time in any situation. She claims that she feels self-conscious and awkward in front of the camera (then again, who wouldn’t with a team of stylists, interviewers and photographers around her as she poses in front of bright lights), but her good humor and natural enthusiasm make her look like a natural. Kaci is calm and cheery under pressure, a quality that viewers of Q-13 FOX News This Morning have come to know well. She greets us every morning with her positive attitude, and her seemingly endless energy is as essential to some as a strong cup of coffee.

Even though Kaci works hard to look polished on TV every morning, she often experiences the same challenges and frustrations that other women face (those feelings of “I have nothing to wear!”). The only difference is that Kaci has to get dressed at 3am, when most of us are still sound asleep, and she has to go to work in front of thousands of viewers--who, by the way, are not shy about commenting on her clothing. We figured: if Kaci can conquer her closet and get herself dressed for success everyday, so can we all! We asked her to share more about her routine, her style and how she manages on those early mornings:

Styled Right: How has being on TV changed your sense of style?Kaci Aitchison: I would say my sense of style had to begin because of my career. Now I have to think about how I present myself and what looks good on camera, which is something I wasn’t used to doing (before I was on TV). I take my job seriously, but I don’t take myself too seriously. I don’t want to dress like a stuffy news woman, instead I really want people to feel like they are watching their friend reporting the news.

SR: You get dressed really early in the morning! How do you do it?KA: I get up and start getting ready for work at 2:45am. The night before, I choose an outfit based on how I’m feeling.

KACI AITCHISONSTYLESPOTLIGHT

Page 17: Styled Right E-Zine (fall/winter 2012)

KACI’SOUTFITESSENTIALS• Black blazer

• Jeans she can dress up or down

• Black pencil skirt

• Gold statement necklace

• Something red (her favorite color to wear)

Also, I wait to do my hair and makeup until I get to work. If I do it before, it always falls flat by the time I get to the station.

SR: What is your favorite thing to wear?KA: Oh, good question! You know how you have a closet of things you like, and then you have a have a couple of things you just love, because you always feel good in them? Well, I love dresses. I always feel good in a dress.

SR: So what happens if you have a bad hair day? KA: Bad hair days are the worst because I can see it in the monitor the whole day. The more I look at it, the more I think about it! I’ve never really figured out how to pull my hair back, so if I’m having a bad hair day I just tease it to give more volume.

SR: How often do you repeat an outfit?KA: I try to go three weeks without repeating an outfit; but if I can’t remember the last time I wore something, I figure it’s ok to wear. Also, I love necklaces because they can really dress up an outfit or make something look entirely different. I have a lot of necklaces. That’s my way of getting a lot of use out of one outfit.(Stylist says: Kaci has a very edited closet, and she likes versatile items that she can get a lot of use from. She will often wear the same blouse twice in a three-week

period paired with different blazers or accessories, so the overall look is totally different).

SR: How do you dress for field reporting?KA: I dress for the weather and the situation. I try and insert myself in to the story. I can’t just stand there, I need to experience it like I’m a part of it. In the field I’ve worn everything from a beanie to jeans to sweatpants (Stylist says: “Sweatpants!”). If I have to wear sweats, I make it funny. Honestly, I just try to be the best version of myself and let my personality shine wherever I am. I don’t want to look perfect, I just want to look like the best version of myself.

SR: You mentioned that you were not into fashion...KA: I’m not a fashion person at all. I love fashion in the sense that I appreciate it, and I think that what you wear can help you feel more confident, but I knew nothing about it; so being able to work with stylists like Darcy Camden and Tiffany Lowry, who can say, ‘based on what you told me about yourself and your needs, here are the things that would look good,’ is really helpful. I need someone to tell me what I can and can’t wear, otherwise I stand in the wardrobe and feel confused.

PROMOTIONAL ARTICLE

Your Expert Fitness GuideBy Ryan Riley of Riley Athleticsrileyathletics.com

The following fact is obvious but its deep significance eludes us most of the time: we only have one body, and our bodies are breathtakingly remarkable systems. If you treat your body with the respect it deserves and give it what it wants, the results will startle you. This isn't hyperbole or empty motivation. I've trained hundreds of people and witnessed staggering transformations. Here are several guidelines to achieving a fitness makeover. Follow these tips and you will look, feel and move better, while laying the foundation for your highest performing lifestyle.  1. Think of fitness as the first principle of happiness and well-being. This doesn't mean that you must live and breathe fitness. I recommend three 40-minute metabolic strength workouts per week with consistency. That adds up to a total of two hours a week. That's it. Ink these workouts on your calendar and treat them like an important work meeting or a doctor's appointment.       2.  Respond to your body’s basic wants and needs. Your body wants to move; it wants to lift things; it WANTS to work hard. That's what it is made to do.  If you deny your body vigorous movement and exertion,

then contentment will probably elude you. Your body doesn't need fancy elliptical machines, gym bling or the fitness movement du jour. It just needs athletic and natural movements and resistance work (such as moderate weight training), and it should be pushed outside its comfort zone.   3.  Work out using a circuit format and quick intervals. Perform a series of exercises in sequence with 40 seconds of work and 15 seconds of rest after each exercise. Training this way is fun, challenging and significantly more beneficial than simply working out on a single machine. 4.  Seek out a professional coach and dedicate yourself to perfecting form & technique.  Kettlebell swings, deadlifts, squats, & presses may sound like fancy and daunting exercises. They are not, but they do require time and practice to perform safely.  Work with a reputable coach to learn and perfect your form. This investment of time and money will reap years and years of health & fitness benefits.        5.  Eat intelligently. You can't out-train a terrible diet. Keep these general guidelines in mind: 1) choose the least processed forms of food; 2) eat fruits and vegetables in a wide variety of colors at every meal; 3) eat a lean protein source with every meal, 4) eat healthy fats like avocados, nuts, seeds, olive oil, and flaxseeds; 5) eat breakfast every day and aim for 5-6 small meals throughout the day.

We all want to look our best, which may mean squeezing into a fancy little dress or favorite pair of skinny jeans for a night. Nutrition expert Deborah Enos shares her top five tips to help you look and feel lean. by Darcy Camden

Flat Belly Tip #1: Beware of carbonated drinksThe fizz in carbonated drinks (even diet sodas or carbonated water) can cause gas to get trapped in your belly and intestines. Instead, drink flat water with some citrus added, squeeze of lemon or lime. Flat Belly Tip #2: Skip the gumOften, while chewing on a stick of gum, you can swallow a lot of air, and extra air in your intestines can cause bloating. Flat Belly Tip #3: Put down the salt shakerExcess sodium can cause water retention. The more processed the food, the bigger the chance  that the food will be high in sodium. Read your labels! Most physicians recommend that you limit your daily sodium consumption to 1,500 to 2,300 mg (or 1/2 to 1 tsp) of sodium per day.

Flat Belly Tip #4:  (Temporarily) Go easy with beans and gassy vegetables If you're not used to eating beans, they can cause that gassy feeling-as can cruciferous family of vegetables, such as broccoli, brussels sprouts and cauliflower.

LISTEN UP! Don’t give up on these super-nutritious, high-fiber vegetables entirely. If you have to fit into your skinny jeans, skip them for one day. Most physicians, nutritionists and other health care professionals will want you to include at least a couple of servings of these foods daily.

Flat Belly Tip #5: Include a few anti-bloating foods and drinks. If you feel a little heavy, try any of the following to reduce bloating: peppermint tea, ginger, pineapple, parsley and yogurt (due to the good kind of bacteria in yogurt). And a simple-yet-delicious anti-bloat drink is flat water with fresh lemon and pomegranate juice.

When the winter chill sets in, our heavy coats and thick sweaters come out. Sure, it’s fun at first, wearing cozy knits and pretty outerwear--but considering wintertime in the Pacific Northwest will last well into the new year, we need to take care to protect our favorite items in order to get the most wear.

Your stylists have compiled this handy guide to help you get the most wear out of your winter favorites:

Suede Coats

Try to store your suede items away from direct sunlight as it can lead to permanent discoloration of the leather.

If your jacket gets wet, dry off with a towel and allow to air dry. Always let your suede dry completely before you try to remove dirt.

Use a microfiber cloth or suede brush to remove dirt and groom the suede. A clean bath towel will also work to bring up the nap.

Stains may also be rubbed off with a damp towel and some white vinegar.

Heavy stains require professional cleaning. Be sure to only use a cleaner that specializes in leather and suede cleaning (not all dry cleaners can properly handle suede garments).

Wool Items

Always fold your sweaters for storage, do not use hangers.

Hand wash in cool water using a mild detergent such as Woolite/Woolite Dark, with NO bleach (bleach will dissolve the wool fibers).

If your wool item is machine-washable (the tag should say “superwash” which is the

industry term for machine-washable wool), use the delicate setting on your washer.

NEVER dry wool in the dryer as the heat will cause it to shrink

Don’t over-wash: wool sweaters may only need to be cleaned once or twice a season.

Cashmere Items

Try not to wear cashmere sweaters more than once in a five day period. Over-wearing can stretch out your cashmere.

Keep your sweaters folded in a drawer away from anything sharp that can scratch or snag the garment.

Always hand wash in cold water. When washing, do not twist.

When hand washing use lukewarm water and a very mild soap or shampoo, such as baby shampoo.

IMPORTANT: When drying cashmere, gently press excess water (again, do not wring or twist). Lay the item out on a clean towel in its original shape, and roll the towel up like a jelly roll with the cashmere item in the middle. Apply pressure to the towel, and unroll, laying the item flat again on another clean dry towel to finish air-drying

Mixed blend sweaters

Rule of thumb for blended fabric content is to wash according to the highest percentage on the label. i.e. if your sweater is 60% cashmere and 40% silk, wash with appropriate cashmere instructions.

MIXOLOGYChief Mixologist Mi-Suk Ahn of BOKA restaurant+bar in Seattle has been infusing various kinds of spirits for years and has become a master of the craft. As one of Seattle’s most celebrated bartenders, her passion for infusions began in the late 90’s when liquor companies were just coming out with flavored vodkas. Mi-Suk realized she could infuse her own vodka along with many other spirits in order to achieve the exact flavor she knew her guests would enjoy. While working for legendary Chef Tamara Murphy at Seattle’s Brasa, Mi-Suk was encouraged to use what was available and in-season, which she would incorporate into her infusions to enhance the flavor of a classic cocktail or to create a brand new one. Since then, Mi-Suk has brought her passion and expertise to BOKA, where she offers an ever-changing selection of around ten unique infusions on her bar menu at any given time.

While it takes time, patience and an innate desire for experimentation, infusing spirits is something anyone can do at home. Here are three festive holiday cocktail recipes courtesy of Mi-Suk inspired by her favorite infused spirits:

Pressed Kumquat2oz  kumquat infused whisky½ oz simple syrup2 drops cherry bittersstir into martini glassgarnish with bourbon cherries Huckleberry Finn2 oz huckleberry infused gin1/2 oz Campari1/4 oz orange juice4 leaves of basil- lightly muddledshake + strain into martini glassgarnish with orange peel Ms. Figgy1 1/2 oz fig infused calvados1/4 oz briottet creme de cassisstir into martini glasstop with champagnegarnish with bourbon cherries

Mi-Suk will teach a special HolidayInfusions Class as part of Holiday Throwback at Hotel 1000 on Monday, December 10th for those who would like to learn. Admission includes the class led by Mi-Suk, bites from BOKA and one personalized infusion for each guest to take home bokaseattle.com

STYLED RIGHT ANSWERS YOUR MOST PRESSING STYLE QUESTIONS

“I bought some beautiful shoes to wear with my holiday party dresses. They are gorgeous, but extremely impractical in the winter weather. Is there anything I can do to protect my heels from getting wrecked in the cold, wet weather? I want to wear them, but I’m afraid to ruin a good pair of shoes, because they were really, really expensive.” —R.S., Tacoma, WA

“I hear you. I bought a stunning pair of heels last fall in anticipation of holiday parties. Of course, on the night I actually wore them, it was freezing cold, icy and wet. But shoes are meant to be worn (it’s the fashion equivalent of using your ‘good’ china). Fortunately, there are several things you can do to protect and clean your favorite shoes. First and foremost, you should take your shoes to a reputable shoe repair place (we love Emerald City Shoe Repair in Seattle) and ask to have rubber zip-stop adhered to the bottom. This will protect the bottom of your shoes, prevent them from stretching out—BONUS: it also makes them more comfortable and they will look newer for longer. It usually costs about $18 per pair, but it’s a worthwhile investment. If your shoes are suede, you should treat them with a water-resistant coating (you can follow the same cleaning steps we reported on page 21). If your shoes are patent leather, you can polish them with Windex and fill in any scuffs with a Sharpie marker. We also love Dr. Scholl’s foldable flats, which you can wear to and from a party and store safely in your clutch.” Darcy Camden

Q&A with Darcy Camden, a recording of

“Be Beautifully Informed” online radio

“I need a new winter coat. Can you recommend a great place to buy a warm, durable coat that isn’t ultra expensive? I worried that if I buy a cheap coat, it won’t be warm enough or last all season, but I also don’t want to spend more than I budgeted, which is about $200.” P.G., Seattle, WA

“You’re in luck! There are so many great coats available in your budget. You are also very smart to set your budget before you embark on shopping, because it’s easy to get confused or spend too much on outerwear, because there are so many options. If you are shopping for a warm dress coat—something you can wear to work and also over a party dress—I suggest you visit H&M. They have a really great selection of warm coats in the $69-$89 dollar range. Some clothing at H&M can fall apart quickly, but not their coats. Many of my clients are surprised by the style and durability of the outerwear at H&M, and I love that most of their women’s coats are very fitted (Tip: always try on your coat before you buy. H&M runs small, so don’t be surprised or offended if you wear a larger size than you normally would at H&M). If you’re looking for a more serious warm coat, like a puffer, you should check out JC Penney. They have a belted down puffer coat that, in my opinion, is warmer and even more stylish than a similar coat at J.Crew. And the JC Penney version is under $100!” Sherri Garcia

STYLE SPOTLIGHT: KACI AITCHISONI’m still not a fashion person, but I have a new appreciation for it, and I take it more seriously.

SR: Where do you get your style inspiration?KA: I look at news and celebrity websites. I like to pay attention to people I admire and respect and see how they dress.

SR: Some people probably look at YOU as someone they admire. What advice would you give them when it comes to dressing for success? KA: I would say don’t worry about BEING stylish, because that can be a really intimidating way to think about fashion. Instead, dress in a way that makes you feel like the best possible version of yourself. Style is all about how you carry yourself in the clothes. I am terrible about knowing which trends to follow and how to match accessories with certain outfits, but I recognize that when I put everything together in a way that matches my mood and personality, I feel stylish and confident. Whether you work with a stylist or a good, honest friend--someone who does enjoy shopping--it’s good to have someone else in your corner. Also, shopping is much less stressful and more fun as a team!

HOT HAIR TRENDSAlso, I’m a believer that hair trends are meant to be watched, but in order to successfully adapt one you must know what will look good on you. When working with a pony, the goal is to achieve balance. If your face is oval, then opt for a higher pony, while a square or round face is balanced out by a lower pony.”

TREND #3 Disconnected Hair for Men

“For men, the big trend was perfectly represented by our work on the Perry Ellis show. The short and messy look for men is out and what’s coming in is a longer, slicked-back look – similar to Mad Men, but a bit more tossed and natural. A style that looks polished, but you can still run your hands through it. The hair was longer on top, cut short on the sides and then lightly blended so that it had a disconnected look. The message was no more bedhead and slightly more substance and sophistication. The disconnection isn’t as extreme as a bowl cut or flat top, but lightly tapered around the head. This is actually a perfect look for the Seattle professional, as it can be easily transformed from corporate to weekend warrior and back again.”
