Closed class study tours generally fall into four categories: • English & Australian Culture• English for Special Purposes• TESOL Professional Development• Tertiary Study Skills
Closed Class OptionsThis study option can be arranged for all client groups with the course specially designed for the needs of each particular group. In this option the course is open only to the particular participant group; however, there is the possibility of incorporating activities that focus on inter-cultural communication with Australian and/or other international students at UWA and UWA CELT.
These Study Tours can be offered at any time througout the academic year and, focus on topics of interest to the group, and be delivered across all levels of English proficiency; however, it is best that the students are of similar language ability.
Closed class Study Tours can be arranged for high school aged students.

English for Special Purposes
UWA Study Tours has designed and offered English for Special Purposes courses with a focus on discipline areas such as science, engineering, law, medicine and business, amongst others.
To complement the group’s English language studies, UWA Study Tours can arrange student visits to university faculties. This will give participants the opportunity to have a valuable professional and cultural experience and to put into practise the skills developed during their course.

The Tertiary Study Skills program is designed to give students the skills to be successful within the UWA academic learning environment. Key learning objectives of the program are: developing the language, research and study skills required for tertiary studies, developing an understanding of Australian culture, developing analytical, reflective, and critical thinking & becoming confident autonomous learners in a tertiary environment. These are achieved by participating in a formal debates using relevant, logical and cohesive arguments, reading extended and lexically complex texts using active reading techniques, critically analysing textual information to uncover point of view and bias, identifying and evaluating cultural differences using authentic materials, listening for information to enable participation in a formal debate, and most importantly understanding the cross-cultural differences in conversation, learning and teaching styles in different academic cultures.

Open Class OptionsThis study option can be arranged for client groups of 18 years and above and gives participants the opportunity to take part in the UWA Centre for English Language Teaching, General & Academic English courses. This option allows students to develop their English language skills with other international students from a variety of countries at the same level of English proficiency. For this option start and end dates are fixed according to the term dates which are taught in five- week terms, nine times a year.

General English classes are for learners who wish to improve their ability to communicate in English. These classes are also a pathway to all other English language programs at UWA. In five-week modules, students practise reading and listening while developing the skills to write and speak clearly and coherently to convey their message with confidence.
Length of course: From 5 to 45 weeksIntake period: 9 intakes each year
Mode of study: 20 hours per weekLevels offered: Upper-intermediate to advanced
English for Academic Purposes classes are for learners who want to develop their English language ability in preparation for tertiary studies in an English-speaking country. In five-week teaching modules, learners develop listening and note-taking skills, seminar and presentation skills together with academic reading and writing skills. Students learn library search skills and develop their proficiency in using information technology. They also learn to adapt to the academic culture of Australian tertiary institutions.
Note: EAP does not provide direct entry to a UWA degree course; EAP students must either sit an IELTS or internet-based TOEFL examination to gain entry.

IELTS Examination Preparation
Length of course: 5 weeksIntake period: 5 intakes each yearMode of study: 20 hours per week
Levels offered: Upper-intermediate
UWA CELT delivers preparation courses for the internationally recognised International English Language Testing System (IELTS) examination. There are five terms per year for the intensive 20-hour per week course.
In addition, UWA CELT delivers part-time IELTS Intensive one-week or four-week evening courses throughout the year.
Students wishing to take the IELTS test will be able to register and sit the exam at the UWA IELTS Test Centre at Nedlands campus.
TOEFL Examination Preparation
Length of course: 5 weeksIntake period: 3 intakes each yearMode of study: 20 hours per weekLevels offered: Upper-intermediate to pre-advanced
UWA CELT offers preparation courses for the internationally recognised TOEFL examinations. There are three TOEFL terms per year, prior to examinations in January, March and June.
In addition, UWA CELT delivers part-time one-week intensive courses delivered four times per year.
