Get supportThe University of Southern Denmark has more than 500 exchange agreements around the globe!Exchange studies are tuition free, but you will have to cover travel and living expenses yourself – however, SDU will assist you with a travel grant based on the exchange program that you participate in. You can also support your study abroad period by applying for private grants and scholarships.

ConditionsYou can go abroad as part of your studies both on your Bachelors and Masters – but you will have to have completed at least 3 semesters of your studies before departure. Your study abroad needs to be credit bearing – meaning that you can transfer credits to your degree.

PreparationYou will need to start planning your study abroad period about 1-1 1/2 years in advance depending on where you want to go, and with which program.

Credit transferYou will have to plan your study program so that you ensure you follow courses that have the appropriate level and workload. You should ask the academic advisor at your Faculty for advice on this.

How to get startedWhen planning to study abroad it pays off to start your preparation early! The application process takes time depending on where you want to go, but your efforts will be worth it

Study abroad on an exchange agreementIf you travel with Erasmus+, Nordplus or on one of SDU’s overseas exchange agreements, an exchange place is reserved for you. Tuition is free and the host university often helps with accommodation and reception.

In EuropeWith the Erasmus+ or Nordplus exchange program you can study within the EU as well as Switzerland, Turkey and our Nordic neighbor countries in Scandinavia.

Application deadline is November 1st for the following academic year.

OverseasSDU also has a number of exchange agreements in Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Indonesia, USA, Venezuela and many, many more countries! SDU International can help you with the application process as well as guidance with the visa, vaccination process etc.

Do an internship abroad If you find an internship outside of Denmark, it can be both Europe and overseas, SDU International can help you with guidance about your credit transfer, the paperwork as well as allocating a grant to help with the extra expenses.

Application deadline is 1 month before the internship.

Do your lab-work, clinical stay or fieldwork elsewhereIf you get the pre-approval from your study board, SDU International can help you with guidance to handle the paperwork, visa, vaccinations as well as providing you with a grant to cover extra expenses.

Do a self-arranged stay outside of SDU’s networkIf you travel on a self-arranged stay you will have to finance and plan the stay on your own.

If you cannot find an exchange place suiting your needs through SDU, you have the option to arrange your study abroad yourself. The advantage is that you can choose freely where and

when you want to go, which gives more flexibility. The disadvantage is the risk of a lower quality experience outside of SDU’s network and you will have to do much of the planning yourself. You can apply for the Study Abroad Scholarship, at the SU office at the student service to help cover your tuition fee. (If you are eligible for SU grant and Loan Scheme) Often you must finance a smaller portion yourself.

Prepare to plan ahead – and start your preparations 1-1½ years before you want to go abroad.

Travel grantIf you are elected for an exchange place abroad through SDU International, you will automatically receive a travel grant either from the Internationalisation Fund, the Erasmus+ programme or Nordplus. The grants awarded will typically cover travel expenses and a little extra.

Grants and scholarshipsYou can also apply for private grants and scholarships, and sometimes this might be necessary to cover all expenses.

Just get out thereMy advice to other students is that you should definitely study abroad. Just get out there. Grab the chance. Even if you don’t really want to now because it’s out of your comfort zone, it will be worth it! You both grow your network and you grow as a person.Seeing the northern lights was probably the most amazing nature experienced I’ve ever had.

You have to give a lot,to get a lotIt’s really hard for the first few weeks. You really have to keep yourself in check and force yourself to go to social activities. Go to eat with others and dance tango even if you don’t feel like it. You have to give a lot of yourself to be a part of a community. And it is difficult, because you want to

stay at home, because you’ve traveled away from your comfort zone. You’ve traveled to a place where you don’t know anyone. But you have to open up, because then others will open up to you too.

Supportive universityAt the university I felt really upported. They arranged so much to make us comfortable. In the dark months, there were even light cafes in the morning! And we received mails once a week about what was going on if we wanted to do any activities. I never felt alone.

Contacts around the worldOne of the great things about studying abroad is that you get tons of great contacts from around the world. There is always someone you can talk

to. If you’re in another country you can contact them and ask them to meet up. So that’s a big advantage, you get contacts around the world.

Going back to do field workI was lucky enough to get the option to do my field work with Tromsø University. I study arctic marine biology, so I thought, where better to be than in the arctic? It would certainly be difficult to do my field work in Denmark.I asked one of my professors in a course during my exchange if he could use a master’s student from Denmark. And he said yes. So when it’s time for my master’s thesis I will be going back to Tromsø to do all my field work there, and then I’ll write my thesis in Denmark with a Danish professor. It’s so exciting!

Students from all over the worldHeidelberg, it’s a great city to study in. The city is very international and full of students from all over the world. It’s especially fun to study physics here because so many people study physics, which isn’t usually the case. I also really like that it’s an old beautiful city with lots of nature, so I can bike out to a mountain and go rock climbing.

Conservatism – difficult but funnySomething which has been kind of funny but also difficult is that the education is very conservative in Germany. The university is very old fashioned. They sure like their papers, forms and signatures. But it’s not such a problem. You just get through it and it all works out.

Great experiencing new thingsOne of the things, I think is really great about studying abroad is that you get away from your usual environment and you get to see another way to live and another way to study.
