Boroondara Literary Festival at Kew Library

Dear Neighbours,

Recently I’ve had cause to spend time in Willsmere Village, and it’s exciting to see the renaissance that is playing out. I want to congratulate all those businesses that are working to bring new life and community connections to Willsmere Village. It is fast becoming a dining destination, and it’s great to see the community out and about in the Village. Additionally, the Willsmere Station Community Garden is progressing well and I look forward to its opening shortly.

Most importantly, I would like to shine a light on our quiet local achiever, the Kew Toy Library for its many years of service, its recent two awards and also for all it does for the local community. The toys are the means, but it delivers much more than that - connectivity between families at all stages and people of all ages.

I’m also excited that funding has been provided through a Federal Government grant to provide the traffic calming measures, the lighting and the surveillance for the Yarra Boulevard in Kew. Council will work with the Victorian Government’s authorities to see these measures are implemented as soon as possible.

Best regards,

Councillor Phillip Healey

Kew Toy Library - Australian Toy Library of the YearEstablished in 1985, the Kew Toy Library is a community service that provides learning opportunities for children of all abilities aged 0-12. Fostering growth through play, the toy library allows the community to borrow educational toys from a large collection for a child’s particular phase of development. It offers a safe and welcoming space for families to seek information, advice and connect with the local community.

This year, the Kew Toy Library won two coveted awards, including Large Toy Library of the Year and Toy Library Coordinator of the Year, presented to Ayse Bayramoglu.

Ayse said the awards were given in recognition of the hard work completed over the past three years by a dedicated committee of volunteers to improve the offering and accessibility of this much-loved community service.

Improvements have included purchasing new toys for the catalogue, increasing volunteer participation, extending the opening hours and implementing new branding and signage, which resulted in increasing membership.

The Kew Toy Library also actively encourages sustainability through fighting the war on waste.

Ayse said by promoting sharing toys and taking care of them for others to use, we help families to raise mindful, generous children.

“Also, through encouraging families to donate their no-longer used toys to the toy library, they reduce consumption and waste and save usable toys from landfill,” Ayse said.

Council is proud to support the Kew Toy Library by providing a space for it to operate. Council also assists by advertising volunteer roles through the Boroondara Volunteer Resource Centre, offering access to professional development courses for community groups, and providing funding through the annual Community Strengthening Grants program.

The Kew Toy Library is located at 152-154 Pakington Street, along with the North Kew Maternal and Child Health Centre and the North Kew Kindergarten.

Did you know Council maintains 751km of stormwater pipes? We have recently completed drainage improvement works in Foley Street, Kew, replacing the previous system with a new stormwater detention system, which will reduce the possibility of local floods during a storm event.

The implementation of this new system is a first for Boroondara. It moves flood water into large underground storage pipes and then slowly drains the water into existing storm water systems, without exceeding the capacity of the system. Local properties will now be more protected from flooding during storm events.

The works will also ensure run-off water is captured from High Street, St James Place and the laneway east of Foley Street. Improvements were also made to the drainage at Foley Reserve, including upgrades within the south-west corner of the reserve.

Council uses a cost-effective distribution method for this publication. This can sometimes mean you receive the newsletter of a neighbouring ward. If this happens, please contact [email protected] and we’ll post the correct newsletter.

Council has been working with VicRoads, Parks Victoria and Boroondara Police to address concerns raised by residents living on, and near Yarra Boulevard in Kew, over ongoing safety issues due to speeding, hooning and the illegal dropping of tacks endangering cyclists.

The Australian Government recently announced that it will provide $5 million to pay for CCTV cameras, lighting and traffic treatments to improve safety for all road users along Yarra Boulevard. The proposed traffic treatments will be fully funded by the Australian Government and delivered by VicRoads as the responsible authority for managing Yarra Boulevard.

On Friday 7 June 2019 we provided our submission on the North East Link (NEL) Environment Effects Statement (EES) to Planning Panels Victoria. It highlighted concerns raised about the impact the design and alignment of the new road would have on the community.

These ranged from loss of parkland in the Koonung Creek Reserve, to the loss of the Boroondara Tennis Centre and the impact on the Freeway Golf Course.

The next stage in the EES process is for the Inquiry and Advisory Committee (IAC) to review the public submissions received. Everyone who provided a submission on the EES can present at the public hearings, which will be held in the project area from late July 2019 and run for approximately seven weeks. If you made a submission, we encourage you to consider presenting. Visit the North East Link website www.northeastlink.vic.gov.au for more details.

Council’s submission is available to view on our website www.boroondara.vic.gov.au/north-east-link-project.
