1 : 1 2 site perspective 2 1 : 500 1 SITE PLAN THE PEARL VISITOR INTERPRETIVE CENTER INTRODUCTION IN THIS PROJECT, I AM MEANT TO DESIGN A VISITOR INTERPRETATION CENTRE IN THE JETTIES. THE IMPORTANCE OF THE VIC IS TO ACT AS A COMMUNITY AREA FOR THE TAN JETTY PEOPLE, OTHER JETTIES AND THE VISITORS. IT BRINGS TOGETHER THE LOCAL PEOPLE AND THE CONTEXT OF THE JETTIES AND AS WELL SHOWS THE COMBINATION BETWEEN THE PAST, PRESENT AND THE FUTURE. I PERSONALLY CHOSE TO DESIGN MY VIC AT TAN JETTY. TAN JETTY IS ONE OF THE SIX CLAN JETTIES IN GEORGE TOWN.IT IS THE THIRD JETTY FROM THE NORTH LOCATED IN BETWEEN CHEW JETTY AND LEE JETTY. IT HOUSES THE PEOPLE OF TAN CLAN WHOSE FOREFATERS WERE IMMIGRANTS FROM CHINA. TAN JETTY WAS CREATED IN THE 19TH CENTURY TO HOUSE THE COOLIES WHO WERE UNABLE TO AFFORD LIVING QUARTERS ON DRY LAND. SITE ANALYSIS CLIMATIC ANALYSIS DESIGN NARRATIVE THE HISTORY THE PEOPLE OF TAN CLAN MOVED IN SEARCH FOR WORK AND GOOD STANDARDS OF LIVING, HOWEVER, THEY DIDN’T FIND. THEY THEREFORE BECAME COOLIES AND FISHERMEN. TAN JETTY WAS CREATED TO BE A HOME FOR THESE PEOPLE WHO WERE UNABLE TO AFFORD LIVING IN QUARTERS ON DRY LAND. THE TAN CLAN PEOPLE FELL INTO CONFLICT WITH OTHER JETTIES BECAUSE OF MONEY AND COMPETITION FOR JOBS. LATER AS MALAYSIA TRIED TO BUILD ITS ECONOMY, THEY POLLUTED THE WATER AND KILLED THE FISH WHICH LED TO LOSS OF JOBS FOR THE TAN JETTY PEOPLE THE PRESENT CURRENTLY, THE JETTIES ARE TAX FREE BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT ON THE MAIN LAND AND THIS HAS MADE THEM BE LEFT OUT ON DEVELOPMENT THEY HAVE BEEN PUT UNDER UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE BECAUSE THEY WANTED TO BE SAVED AS THE JETTIES WERE BEING DESTROYED. HOWEVER THIS TOO HAS COME WITH ITS ONSIQUENCIES AS THEIR PRIVACY HAS BEEN INVADED BECAUSE IT IS NOW A PUBLIC TOURIST AREA THIS HAS GREATLY AFFECTED THE JETTIES IN A WAY THAT THEY NO LONGER LEAD A HAPPY QUIET LIFE BECAUSE THEIR HOMES ARE OPEN TO EVERY ONE LOCATION PLAN 1:500, TAN JETTY SITE ANALYSIS MY SITE IS LOCATED ON TAN JETTY BETWEEN THE TEMPLE AND THE THAI RESTUARANT. IT IS ACCESSED FROM THE THAIR RESTUARANT SIDE AND EXITED FROM THE TEMPLE SIDE. THEY HAVE BEEN PUT UNDER UNESCO WORLD HERITAGEBECAUSE THEY WANTED TO BE SAVED AS THE JETTIES WEREBEING DESTROYED.

MY SITE IS LOCATED ON TAN JETTYBETWEEN THE TEMPLE AND THE THAIRESTUARANT. IT IS ACCESSED FROMTHE THAIR RESTUARANT SIDE ANDEXITED FROM THE TEMPLE SIDE.

THE SITE IS SORROUNDED BY AN OCEANAND ONLY CLOSER TO THE JETTY HOUSES

THE SITE IS ASYMETRICALLY BALANCEDAS SOME HALVES ARE WAY BIGGER THANTHE OTHER

THE GALLERY IN A KIND OF DARK SPACE WITH VERY LITTLE LIGHT COMING IN FROMTHE EDGES WITH IN THE UNPROPORTIONAL WALLS OF THE SPACE. THE FORM ANDINTERIOR OF THE GALLERY HIGHLIGHT ON THE SUFFERING AND TORTURE THAT THETAN PEOPLE FOUND AFTER COMING INTO THE MALAYSIA.HAVING LESS LIGHT TO THEINTERIORS INDICATES THAT THE JETTY PEOPLE HOPED TO GET BETTER WITH TIIME.THE TWO GALLERIES ARE CONNECTED BY A SPIRAL STAIR CASE WHICH INDICATES THESTRUGGLES THE TAN PEOPLE HAD TO FACE IN SEARCH FOR BETTER LIVING. THEUSERS FEEL SCARED,HAVE SO MUCH FEAR AND CONQURED AND UNCOMFORTABLE

THE RECEPTION IS HAS GOT TWOBIG ENTRANCES AND AN OPENFRONT TO INDICATE THE FREEDOMTHAT THE TAN PEOPLE FELT LIKETHEY GOT ON COMING TO MALAYSIAAS THEY WERE RUNNING AWAYFROM DIFFERENT THINGS IN THEIRCOUNTIRES

THE VIEWING AREA IS YET ANOTHER POETIC SPACEMADE UP OF MOSTLY GLASS WITH A GLASS FLOORINGAND AND ATTACHED BALCONY FACING THE EMPTYSIDE OF THE SEA. HAVING A GLASS FLOORING TRIESTO INDICATE THE RISKS THE PEOPLE OF THE TANPEOPLE HAVE TAKEN IN SEARCH FOR PEACE FULSETTLEMENTS. THE OPEN END TO THE EMPTY SIDEINDICATES THAT THE PEOPLE HAVE FINALLY BECOMEPEACEFUL BUT STILL HAVENT GOTTEN THE REALPEACE THAT THEY WANTED AND THE SEARCH GOESON

THE THIRD GALLERY IS LOCATED UNDERTHE VIEWING AREA. IT HAS GOT MUCH MORELIGHTING COMPARED TO THE OTHERGALLERIES WITH QUITE LARGER WINDOWSTO INDICATE THAT EVEN IF THE PEOPLE OFTHE JETTIES HAVE FACED A LOT OFCHALLENGES, THEY HAVE ALWAYS FOUGHTHARD AND FOUND A WAY TO SURVIVE ITTHE END. THE SPACE MARKSPEACEFULNESS, AND SURVIVAL AFTER A LOTOF SUFFERING. THIS IS THE GALLERY WITHTHE AMAZING AND MOST AMUSINGMEMORIES ABOTU THE JETTY

THE GATHERING SPACE IS THE LAST SPACE ATTHE SITE WITH ONE OPEN END AND VERYOPEN WALLS. IT IIS BASICALLY TO PROMOTEUNITY AND BRING OUT THE CHEERFUL FEELINGIN EVERYONE AT THE JETTY AND TO BASICALLYBRING OUT THE FACT THAT NO MATTTER THECHALLENGES IN THE JETTIES, THEY SHOULDALWAYS REMEBER TO BE ONE ANDTOGETHERNESS

1.THE USER WILL ACCEST THE VICFROM THE RECEPTION AREAWHERE THEY WILL FEEL OVERWHELMED AND HAPPILY ANXIOUSBECAUSE THE SPACE BRINGS IN AFEELING OF FREEDOM ANDBEAUTY.

2.THIS DOOR LEADS TO A SMALLPATH THAT CONNECTS TO THEFIRST GALLERY, THE PATH ISSMALL TO TO SHOW THAT THE TANPEOPLE DIDNT REALLY MEET THEIRFREEDOM AS IT SEEMED TIO BE IINTHE START (RECEPTION)

3.THE FIRST GALLERY IS A DARK SPACE WITH VERYLESS LIGH T COMING FROM THE EDGES OF THEWALL.. THIS SPACE SHOWS SOME OF THE BADMEMORIES AND WORST MOMENTS THE TAN PEOPLEHAVE HAD EVER SINCE THEY CAME TO MAAYSIA.USERS TEND TO FEEL UNCOMFORTABLE IN THISSPACE BECAUSE IT IS SCARY AND DARK. THE SPACEAHS GOT A SPIRAL STAIR CASE THAT LEADS TO THESECOND GALLERY

4.THE TWO GALLERIES ARECONNECTED BY THIS SPIRAL STAIRCASE TO HIGHLIGHT ON THESTRUGLES THAT THEY HAVE BEENTHROUGH. "EVEN IN THE DARKEST,YOU HAVE TO TAKE A LONG STAIRCASE TO EXIT OR FIND LIGHT.STAIR CASE INDICATESSTRUGGKING

5.THE SECOND GALLERY IS YETANOTHER DARK SPACE THAT ALSOSHOWS MORE ABOUT THE HISTORY OFTHE JETTIES AND HOW THE TAN PEOPLEWERE TORTURED ON THEIR ARRIVAL TOMALAYSIA. IT IS ALSO SCARY ANDFEARFUL BECAUSE OF THE DARKNESSAND SILENCE IN IT. IT CONNECTS TOANOTHER SMALL CORRIDOR THAT LEADSTO ANOTHER SPCAE

6.THIS IS A SMALL PATH BETWEEN THE GALLERYAND THE VIEWING AREA AT THE SECOND LEVEL. ITIS BRIGHT AND OPEN TO SHOW THE LITTLE BIT OFFREEDOM THE JETTY PEOPLE HAVE GOT WITHTIME. HOWEVER IT IS SQUEEZED TO SHOW THATTHEY HAVENT GOTTEN AS MUCH AS THEY DESERVEBECAUSE THEY CANT EVEN LIVE QUIETLY IN THEIRHOMES

7.THIS IS THE VIEWIING AREA,OPEN WITH SO MUCH LIGHT AND ABALCONY. PEOPLE CAN SIT HEREFOR SITE VIEWING AND RELAXING,THEY EXPERIENCE FREEDOM ANDRELAXATION WITH IS HIGHLIGHTEDBY SO MUCH LIGHT AND OPENNESS

8.THE VIEWING HAS GOT A STAIR WAYTHAT LEADS TO THE FINAL GALLERY

9.THE FINAL GALLERY IS ONE WHICH TRIES TOSHOW THAT THE PEOPLE OF TAN JETTY HAVEFOUGHT SO HARD FOR THEIR FREEDOM AND TOA CERTAIN EXTENT THEY AHVE ATTAINED ALITTTLE BIT OF IT. THIS IS SHOWED AS THISGALLERY HAS GOT MUCH LIGHT AND AN AMAZINGVIEW

10.THE NEXT SPACE IS THE SHOP THATIS ACCESSED IMMEDIATELY AFTEREXITING THE FINAL GALLERY. USERSCAN BUY THINGS LIKE BOOKS, DRINKS ,CULTURAL STUFF AND OTHERS FROMHERE.THE SHOP IS LOCATED NEXT TOTHE CAFETERIA.

11.THE CAFETERIA IS LOACTEDAT THE EXTREME END OF THESITE. USERS CAN HAVE THEIRLUCNH AND HANG OUT HERE

12.AND FINALLY THE GATHERING SPACE THAT IS LOCATEDRIGHT OPPOSITE THE CAFETERIA AS THE LAST SPACE, ITIS MERGED WITH TOILETS, STORAGE AND UTILITY.GATHERING COMES AS THE LAST SPACE TO HIGHLIGHT ONUNITING AND INFORMING THAT NO MATTER THEDIFFERENCES AMONG THE PEOPLE OF THE JETTY, THEYWILL ALWAYS BE ONE. USERS CAN SIT HERE, CHAT ANDSPEND SOME GOOD TIME TO THEM SELVES
