Eombay ABSTRACT: The paper illustrates the suitability of using a normal three-phase induction motor as a capac- itor self-excited induction generator (SEIG). The thermal limit of the stator windings being the limiting factor, the capacity of the SEIG i s determined. The steady-state performance of such induction generators, maintaining a constant terminal voltage is analysed under resistive and reactive loads. Typical experi- mental results are also presented. An analytical method employing Newton-Raphson technique is used to obtain the desired performance. Certain performance indices are defined which would provide guidelines in the development of induction generator systems includ- ing the voltage regulator. It has been fcurd that for normal low power motors, the maxir" power that can be extracted as generators is 148% to 160% of the motor rating for resistive loads and 118% to 128% of the motor ratingfor 0.8 lagging power f a c t o r (PF) loads. Capacitive reactive volt-ampere(var) required to maintain constant voltage at 1.0 p.u. speed i s in the range 85% to 140% of the power rating of the motor with resistive loads and 100% to 140% with lagging reactive loads. INTRODUCTION A three-phase irduction machine can be made to work as a self-excited generator when its rotor is driven at suitable speeds by an external prime mover a d its excitation i s provided by connecting a three-phase capacitor bank at the stator terminals. The irduced emf a d current in the stator windings will continue to rise until an equilibrium is attained due to the magnet 1c saturation in the machine. This topic has received considerable attention in recent years c1-81 i n view of the suitability of induction generators for isolated power generation using conventional and renewable energy sources. Such an induction generator compares f avcurably in cost, ease of operation and maintenance with a conventional alternator [7,81. emphasis on energy problems, the development of suitable low cost isolated power generators, driven by energy sources such as wind, biogas etc., is indeed a promising alternative [ 4 1. The acceptability of these generators as viable generating units would be decided by their ability to provide desired voltage and frequency at all loads and speeds. The development of static power converters facilitates control of the generated power to the required voltage or frequency levels C2-43. One is to redesign the irduction machine to obtain the required generator performance an3 the other is to explore the suitability of using an available induction motor as a SEIG. While the published papers [5-81 relate mainly to analytical techniques, no work is reported regarding the design ard development of such generators. In particular, the aspect relating to tbc use of commercially available motors as generators has not been reported. If it can be established by a proper study that the normal motors can be employed as generators, conslderable expenditure and effort towards a tailor made design of the genera- tor cald be eliminated. Such a study has been urder- taken i n this paper. It is desired that the iduction generator provides a constant terminal voltage under varying laods. In practice, a drop in both the terminal voltage and frequency with increasing load is an observed feature. A constant terminal voltage alone implies an increasing value of air gap flux for the induction generator, which would result in a continuously varying magnetising reactance. A constant 'air gap voltage to frequency' ratio ensures the operation of the induction generator at a constant air gap flux. Hence, in this analysis the criterion of maintaining a constant 'air gap voltage to frequency' ratio is considered. However, because of the ease of measurement, the experimental results have been obtained under a constant 'terminal voltage' condition. Since the difference between the air gap voltage and the terminal voltage is insignificant, the consequent errors can be ignored. The analytical method would be more involved if results under constant terminal voltage had to be obtained instead of those under constant flux. For the case under study, it is desirable that the machine functions equally well either as a motor or as a generator. In the case of a squirrel cage induction motor acting as a generator, heating of the stator wirdings is the limiting factor on the capacity of power generation rather than the rotor since the rotor cage is capable of withstanding considerable thermal overload .In the case of an induction generator, the stator windings carry a current equal to the vector difference of the rotor current and the magnetising current whereas in the same machine acting as an induction motor, the stator windings carry a current equal to the vector sum of the rotor current and the magnetising current. Thus the allowable range of induction generator operation with an imposed limit on the rotor current does not contain the entire available range of stator current. This implies that power can be extracted from the generator even under the condition when the rotor current is more than its rated value and the stator current is within its maximum limit. Therefore, in this study the full-load value of the stator current has been taken to be the limiting condition for power generation. The capacitive var requirement of the machine to maintain a constant terminal voltage and the maximum power that can be obtained from the machine working as a generator are determined. Since most electrical loads are of lagging PF, the performance of the generator with lagging PF loads is also studied and the capacitive var requirement is determined. 0885-8969/88/12OO-0842$01 .OOO 1988 IEEE

INTRODUCTION

For t h e case under s t u d y , i t i s d e s i r a b l e t h a t t he machine f u n c t i o n s e q u a l l y w e l l e i t h e r as a motor or as a g e n e r a t o r . DETAILS OF THE EXPERIMENT

Power gene ra t ion was a c h i e v d by d r i v i n g t h e i r d u c t i o n gene ra to r a t t h e r a t e d speed by a d . c . motor. S u i t a b l e three-phase c a p a c i t o r bar,ks were connected to provide e x c i t a t i o n . c o n s t a n t by a d j u s t i n g the c a p a c i t a n c e a t a l l l oads . Various inpu t ard ou tpu t q u a n t i t i e s were monitored f o r each load s e t t i n g .

CONCLUSIONS

The s tudy has confirmed t h a t a normally designed induc t ion motor can be s u c c e s s f u l l y used a s a t h ree - phase s e l f - e x c i t e d gene ra to r f o r low power a p p l i c a t i o n s . For each of t he fou r machines cons idered i n t h i s i n v e s t i g a t i o n , i t has been shown t h a t t h e maximum available power, as a generator, is in the range of 118 percent to 160 percent of' the respective motor rating.

In order to maintain the constancy of the gener- ator terminal voltage, i t has been shown that the value of the capacitance varies over a wide range. machines considered, the desired range of capacitive kVAR variation has been found to be 85 to 185% of the machine rating. The criterion of limiting the stator current in the determination of maximum generated power, has been found t o be appropriate. Test results confirm the validity of the analytical method employed.

The study was extended to cover a range of standard motors up to 100 k W and the results seem to confirm the general trend presented here. induction motors can be employed as self-excited generators, with constant speed prime movers.

S.Sreenivasa Murthy was born in Karnataka,India on December 6,1946. He received the B.E.Degree

cal engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), New Delhi, in 1974.

After teaching a year at the Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani, he joined IIT,Delhi in 1970 as Associate Lecturer and was promoted to the post of ?f.cKurer in 1 9 7 3 . Assistant Professor in 1975, Associate Professor in 1980, and Professor in 1983.

;wing 1975-76 he was at the Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Newcastle upon Tyne(Eng1and) as Visiting staff. Using his sabbatical leave he worked as a Visiting Scientist/Fellow at the University of Calgary (Canada) from November 1980 to Yay 1982. He worked at the R&D department of Kirloskar Electric Co., Bangalore as a visiting in-house Consultant during 1985- 86 and executed several projects relevant to the Industry He was also an adjunct Professor of the Indian Institute of Science,Bangalore, during this year

He has published a number of papers and has edited and published two laboratory manuals. He has completed many Industrially sponsored projects. His current interest area5 include electrical machines, electric drives, thyristor applications, efficient electric energy utilisation, isolated power generators, wind and micro hydro power generation,and engineering education.

He is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers (India) and a Life Member of the Indian Society for Technical Education. In 1976 he received the President of India Award for the best research paper published i n the Journals of the I.F.(I).

B.P.Singh(SM) was born in Singhiya,India, in 1940. He received the B.Sc.(Engg.) degree in 1963 from BIT, Sindri, Y.E. in Electrical Engrg.in 1966, from Calcutta University, and Ph.D. in 1974, from I I T Delhi.

He was a Senior Fellow at B.E.Colleee,Howrah(l963- 66) and after serving M . I . T . Nuzaffarpur as a faculty member for over a decade (1966-78), he joined I I T Delhi in 1978 as Assistant Professor of Electrical Engrg.and became a Professor in the year 1985. His research interests are in design, analysis and control of electrical machines. He is a life member of Indian Society for Technical Education.
