Hospice and Palliative Care Organization Awarded travel funds

“Students from the Hospice and Palliative Care Organization at UTMB were

able to take a trip to Tennessee Colony where they visited the Michael Unit, a

maximum security prison that houses the only prison hospice in the state of

Texas. During their visit, students met with the medical director, hospice

coordinator, chaplain, and members of the nursing staff who graciously

answered all of their questions. They also spent time visiting with patients and

talked to the prisoners who served as medical assistants and provided care to

those at the end of life.”

Annual Healthy Living Event

The student-run Healthy Living Event is similar to a health fair, but is focused on teaching sustainable healthy living to under-served adults and children in the Galveston community and getting individuals connected to healthcare resources, especially those who lack adequate health insurance coverage.

We teach healthy cooking, demonstrate fun exercises for children and adults, and educate attendees about preventative care. We also assess blood pressure, blood sugar, and A1c hemoglobin levels.
