Policy AccomplishmentsBreast Feeding
• 12 Chicago hospitals have entered the pathway to become Baby Friendly
• Increased WIC support for breastfeeding through lactation counselor training

• Standards for nutrition, physical activity and screen time
• 90 trainings reached 1,400 day care center providers
• All licensed day care centers are adopting standards, which as of 12/20/11 was 743 centers
Policy Accomplishments Tobacco Prevention
• 1638 units of private smoke-free housing
• 4 CHA smoke-free developments
• 750 undercover stings for illegal sales to minors

• All City Colleges & Roosevelt University• 4 more hospitals are now smoke-free• Catholic schools smoke-free• The Y of Metro Chicago expanded its smoke-free policy
at four of its residential facilities with a commitment to be 100 percent smoke free by October 2012

• State Cigarette tax increase of $1.00• Tobacco vending machines are no longer permitted in
Chicago• “Roll Your Own” cigarette tobacco machines will now be
taxed at the same rate as cigarettes • 5 Chicago drug treatment centers have implemented
smoke-free campuses.• Over 30 Chicago FQHCs have implemented the Ask,
Advise and Refer model providing over 104,000 patients to be screened for tobacco use

• Established Office of Adolescent and School Health • Hired CPS Chief Health Officer• Expanded STI screening in CPS schools• Improved nutritional standards for school meals• 56 schools certified by Healthier
