Kitt Peak is a Sacred Mountain

Kitt Peak is located on the TohonoO'odham Reservation, stretching 90miles across the Sonoran Desertsouthwest of Tucson. This has been the

ancestral homeland of the TohonoO'odham Nation for over 2,000 years.

To the O'odham Nation, Kitt Peak is asacred mountain although not as sacredas Baboquivari Peak , the large granitedome found to the south. The O'odhamregard Baboquivari to be the navel of

the world, center of the universe.

    Spacewatch: 1.8 m and .9 m Telescopes

The primary goal of Spacewatch is toexplore the variouspopulations of smallobjects in the solarsystem, and study thestatistics of asteroids and comets in order to investigatethe dynamicalevolution of the solarsystem.

    The 12-m Radio Telescope

The 12m offers usersflexibility and theopportunity to respondquickly to new scientificdevelopments. TheObservatory maintains

low-noise receivingsystems covering allatmospheric windows form68 GHz to 180 GHz.Operational reliability

throughout is emphasized.Flexible spectral line andcontinuum backends allowthe observer to match theinstrument to the scientificgoals.
