Page 2: Studenten Information

Welcome at Hanzehogeschool Groningen! This booklet is intended for all students of Hanze University of Applied Sciences (or Hanze UAS). It contains a summary of information about all the facilities we have in place to help you with your studies.

We have over 27.000 students studying more than 70 programmes, and we employ some 3,000 staff. Most programmes are taught on the Zernike Campus, but some are based in the centre of Groningen and a few are taught in Leeuwarden, Assen and Amsterdam.

Hanze UAS provides modern, top-of-the-range facilities to allow you to concentrate properly on your studies. These include free wireless internet, as well as sports and leisure facilities so that you can meet and socialise with fellow students. Try visiting the Atrium on the Zernike Campus, a light, inspiring place, intended for relaxing and meeting other students and staff.

Hanze UAS is keen for students to take an active part in all the processes going on within the organisation. You can use any facilities in any building, regardless of the programme you are following. If your building does not have a project room or spare computer station, for example, you can simply go to another building to find the room you need.

In order to maintain a pleasant environment for studying and working, changes and renovations are regularly carried out in the buildings of Hanze University of Applied Sciences. A lot of work has already been planned for this academic year. For example, a new auditorium is to be built in the Van DoorenVeste and several classrooms will be modified, the Hanze Media Centre in the Van OlstToren was renovated during the summer holidays and the Wiebenga complex and the Prince Claus Conservatorium will undergo major renovations during the next few years.

The renovations may cause a certain degree of nuisance, which we will naturally try to keep to a minimum. In the meantime, we wish you all the best at Hanze University of Applied Sciences Groningen!

Henk Pijlman, Chairman of the Executive Board

FacilitiesWorkstationsAll the buildings of the Hanze UAS provide the modern, general facilities needed to learn in pleasant, friendly surroundings. The classrooms and lecture halls have been fitted with modern equipment, and there are also areas designated for working in groups or individual study. The programme departments all have good practical labs and computer rooms. Project rooms are rooms that have been specially equipped so that groups of students can focus on their projects. Some buildings also provide a study and resource centre, where you can work in groups or

individually, check your e-mail, use the internet, consult with fellow students or just relax. Machines for printing, photocopying and scanning are situated throughout the buildings. You can use the facilities in any building, regardless of your own programme, as all Hanze UAS buildings are freely accessible to all students.

If you want to check whether and where a computer workstation is available, simply go to the workstation site and/or the app: WBA.HANZE.NL. The Hanze Media Centre on the Zernike Campus has a hundred ‘silent’ study areas where you can concentrate without being disturbed.

Logging onYou can log onto the Hanze UAS Groningen network as follows:• Wireless: Go to WWW.HANZE.NL/WIRELESS for instructions.

If you still have problems, go to the AV/IT Helpdesk on the ground floor of A wing of Zernikeplein 11, or go to the Helpdesk in the Wiebenga complex.

• Plug in: you will find the instructions on: WWW.HANZE.NL/LAPTOPREGISTREREN

• Student PCs: to check availability, consult the screens that have been hung up or go to WBA.HANZE.NL

In addition to sufficient workstations, all buildings have plenty of areas for catching up with your fellow students. Every building also has a service point, where you can ask questions about the facilities.

Page 5: Studenten Information

CanteensMost Hanze UAS locations have their own canteen, and some of them have extra catering outlets, such as the Deli Marché and Espresso Bar in the Van OlstToren location. The canteens offer a wide range of food and drink, including healthy, organic and Fairtrade products, as well as popular fast-food options. The buildings also have vending machines for hot and cold beverages and sweets.

WebRoomBookingHanze UAS uses WebRoomBooking for making and taking bookings for project rooms, skills labs and practical labs. The system means that you can book while you are on site, at home or somewhere in between. Hanze students can use WebRoomBooking for the following locations:

 Van OlstToren

 BrugsmaBorg

 Marie KamphuisBorg

 Minerva Academy

 Prince Claus Conservatoire

 Willem-Alexander Sports Centre

 Van DoorenVeste

 Wiebenga complex

Academy of Popular Culture (Music & Design)

Digital boards, PCs and beamers are not part of the standard equipment, but you can book them through the AV/IT Helpdesk. For more information and to make a booking, go to HTTPS://WRB.HANZE.NL/WEBSITE/

Page 6: Studenten Information

Digi timetableAll Hanze UAS schools, apart from the Conservatoire and the Dance Academy, use the Digi timetable. Students can consult their timetable online via the DIGIROOSTER.HANZE.NL website, or find up-to-date information on their mobile phone by registering with the website.

Meditation Centre (Van OlstToren - Zernikeplein 7, E1.06)The Meditation Centre is a place for silent meditation, contemplation and prayer. It is intended for use by students and staff. This is the place to come if you need to get away from everything and be on your own for a while. Prayer mats are available. The Meditation Centre is open whenever the building is open.

IT facilitiesHanze UAS has all the latest technology. You can connect to the free wireless internet on your laptop, telephone or tablet in any building, allowing you to work wherever you are. Studying at Hanze UAS is much easier if you have your own laptop, although there are also PCs in all the buildings. You can use any PC, regardless of where your programme is actually based. The standard number of PCs at Hanze UAS is 1 for every twelve students. This may seem like a lot, but it may still be difficult to find a spare PC during ‘rush hours’. Various buildings have hung screens showing live availability of PCs, and you will find up-to-date information on WBA.HANZE.NL.

Tips and rules for using computers You may only use the computers for studying; don’t keep

other students waiting while you play computer games

Don’t keep a computer to yourself if you are not actually using it

Log off when you have finished working

Specific rules apply at some workstations; always stick to these rules

Please report defective PCs, printers or plug-in points to the IT Support Centre, tel. (050) 595 4566 or via e-mail to [email protected]. They will arrange for someone to carry out the repairs

Take ‘rush hours’ into account and try to use PCs when there is less demand. For up-to-date availability, go to WBA.HANZE.NL or consult the screens showing live information

Page 7: Studenten Information

If a classroom has been reserved for teaching, the PCs are only available to students attending that class

Make sure that you have installed up-to-date anti-virus software and the latest security updates on your notebook. You can buy this (and other software) at fair prices through WWW.SURFSPOT.NL, a partnership between educational institutions. SURFSPOT.NL is a non-profit IT online store where you can purchase legal software, reference work, course material and hardware with substantial discounts for those in education. Log on to SURFSPOT.NL using your student account and save yourself a fortune! More information about using your computer safely is available on WWW.CYBERSAVEYOURSELF.NL

Main AV/IT Helpdesk Zernike CampusIf you have any questions about the IT facilities, you can take them to the AV/IT Helpdesk. This is also the place to borrow audio-visual equipment, such as digital cameras, voice recorders and tripods/stands. A video editing suite is also available. The Zernike Campus has a main AV/IT Helpdesk, which is located on the ground floor of the A0 wing of Zernikeplein 11. You can also call or send an e-mail for extra support: telephone (050) 595 4566, e-mail [email protected]. Opening hours: Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Wednesday and Friday from 8.15 a.m. to 4.45 p.m. Opening hours may vary during holiday periods.

Account and e-mail addressEvery student has a personal Hanze UAS account and e-mail address. You can use your personal account to log onto the internet on PCs in any of the buildings and gain access to the digital learning environment of Hanze UAS. This is the main location for all information relating to your programme. You will also receive information through your e-mail address. If you lose your account details, go to the AV/ IT Helpdesk

Page 8: Studenten Information

at Zernikeplein 11 (A0 wing), or in the Wiebenga cComplex, taking your student card with you.

Electronic learningHanze Electronic Learning Environment is the collective name for all digital applications provided by Hanze UAS via internet. All these digital applications are shown on HANZE.NL.

You will need HANZE.NL regularly while you are studying as this is the place to find information relating to your programme, such as schedules, timetable changes, study manuals, news items, etc.

Pop-up in De PlintDe Plint, a fabulous strategic location on the Zernike Campus, has a terrific area that is currently vacant. We think this is a terrible waste so we have turned it into a pop-up ‘student chill area’, where students can meet up, chill, enjoy a healthy drink or a bite to eat, play table football or just sit and watch the world go by...

You can chill from 31 August until the autumn break (at least)!

Wireless! You can use the wireless internet for working on your laptop throughout Hanze UAS. Go to WWW.HANZE.NL/WIRELESS or ask at the AV/IT Helpdesk.

Printing, photocopying and scanningYou can send a print command from the PCs in the buildings or from your laptop. You simply log on to printers to print, copy or scan using your OV chip card or a special printer card supplied by Hanze UAS. You must obviously have enough print credit. If not, simply top up your card online using iDeal. More information is available on HANZE.NL via WWW.HANZE.NL/PRINTERS.

Page 9: Studenten Information

EduroamDo you need to work in Amsterdam or Utrecht, for example? As a student of Hanze UAS, you can use your log on data to connect to the wireless network of many other Eduroam-affiliated institutes in the Netherlands. For more information, go to WWW.EDUROAM.NL

SoftwareSoftware can be expensive. Hanze UAS has contracts with a number of suppliers, such as WWW.SURFSPOT. NL, so that you can get a good deal.

Rights and obligationsTake CareHanze UAS is not only the place where you study; you also become part of the Hanze community. You and the staff have joint responsibility for making sure that everything in the buildings goes smoothly and for keeping your learning environment clean and tidy. Hanze UAS does have house rules as such, but expects all its students to observe the Take Care ideology: ‘Create a pleasant learning and working environment together’. Among other things, this means disposing of your own rubbish, only smoking in the designated areas, parking your bike in the bike racks and taking due care of Hanze UAS property.

Student CharterHanze UAS must also comply with certain rules. For example, there is a rule specifying that students must be informed of exam results as soon as possible, within fifteen working days of taking the exam at the most. Rights and obligations must obviously be laid down with the utmost care. The main rights and obligations applying to students are set out in the Student Charter. These include matters such as tuition fees, the quality of teaching, study supervision, examination regulations, student facilities, codes of conduct, the registration of personal data and

Page 10: Studenten Information

rules on undesirable behaviour. Some of the rights and obligations are compulsory by law, while others have been put in place by Hanze UAS. Everyone who enrols at Hanze UAS is automatically subject to the rights and obligations. You can read the Student Charter on WWW.HANZE.NL/ STUDENTENSTATUUT.

Certain other rules and regulations may apply to your particular programme. You will find them on the programme pages of HANZE.NL.

Student confidential advisorHanze UAS wants to provide a safe, pleasant environment for you to study, and has devised policy to tackle undesirable behaviour. If you are confronted with undesirable behaviour, you should contact the (external) student confidential advisor, Charisma Bijlefeld. She is available from Monday to Friday at [email protected], on tel. +31 (0)64 615 3934 or through the secretary at the student counsellor’s office, Zernikeplein 7, tel. +31 (0)50 595 4028.

Participation CouncilMany of the decisions made in an organisation the size of a university of applied sciences will logically affect everyone working or studying there. These decisions are made not only by managers and administrators. Participation councils have also been established to assess all decisions with far-reaching implications. The participation councils comprise an equal number of students and staff members. If you would like to make your voice heard, you will find more information on HANZE.NL/MEDEZEGGENSCHAP.

Complaints and Disputes OfficeThe Complaints and Disputes Office is an independent body that deals with objections and appeals. If you do not agree with a decision and think that it has damaged your interests, you can file an objection with the Student Appeals Board of Hanze UAS. The Complaints Committee for Undesirable Behaviour deals with complaints relating to all forms of undesirable behaviour and harassment. The Whistle-blower’s Regulations Committee investigates suspected misunderstandings. You will find the Complaints and Disputes Office on HANZE.NL, under HANZE.NL/RECHTEN.

Academic counsellingPersonal supervision and guidance are high on Hanze UAS’ agenda, which is why an academic counsellor is always available to answer your questions. He/she can guide your study progress, your personal development and help you to make decisions about your programme that may affect your future. The academic counsellor can provide information about studying for your particular programme at Hanze UAS and refer you to other people or organisations should this become necessary.

OSIRISHanze UAS uses the OSIRIS student information system. This system stores all data relevant to your studies from the moment you enrol for a programme at Hanze UAS until you are awarded a certificate. The OSIRIS Student module gives you insight into your own progress as a student. You can also

Page 12: Studenten Information

register and deregister for courses, assessments, Minors and specialisations, and consult the full list of available courses. OSIRIS Student is also used as a means of communicating with your academic counsellor.

Student CounsellorPeople sometimes get into difficulties, either in their private lives or in their studies. If you find yourself in a tight spot, the student counsellors are there to help you. Student counsellors will listen to your problems and if you like, offer information, advice, and a second opinion on subjects relating to your studies, your programme choice or your personal situation. Read more on HANZE.NL/STUDENTENDECANAAT

Lower discounts may apply outside promotional periods. You can also borrow compulsory textbooks from Hanze Media Centre.

Student activitiesHanze UAS is not only a place for studying; you are also part of the Hanze community. For example, you could be actively involved in a student representative body or participate in one (or more) of the numerous activities organised by and for students. Hanze UAS provides funding and facilities to encourage students to develop their talents in various different areas. Student activities are part of the reason that Groningen is such a lively, active student city.

Student representative activitiesCan you imagine the buzz you get out of organising an event, spurring students into action or consulting with management about policy? Apart from the buzz, taking part in these activities also teaches you a lot and earns you a certificate which looks good on your CV. Hanze UAS wants to encourage students to be actively involved in student representative bodies, such as a participation council, a student association, ACLO, KEI or Studium Generale. The possibilities are outlined later in this chapter, or you can ask the Student Activities Foundation (SSA) or an academic counsellor about the opportunities and facilities open to you.

MissionFrom a European perspective on higher education, Hanze UAS aims to be the foremost partner for businesses and institutions in the North Netherlands in terms of training professionals and developing relevant, practical knowledge.

Share your talent. Move the world.‘Share your talent. Move the world.’ goes further than simply developing talent. Our University of Applied Sciences has a rich history, in which contributing to society has always played a major part. Helping the world; that is our talent! We are very proud that our students and staff are putting their talents to use to create a better world.

Fair TradeHanze UAS is the first Fair Trade University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands. Our canteens serve countless Fair Trade products, alongside the usual tea and coffee. We are proud to be contributing to the ongoing fight against poverty in this way. For more information, go to WWW.HANZE.NL/FAIRTRADE.

17 schoolsHanze UAS has 17 different schools. These schools represent clusters of related programmes. Each cluster is headed by a Dean. You will find an overview of the schools and programmes on WWW.HANZE.NL/OPLEIDINGEN.

Research Centres and professorshipsHanze UAS has a large number of research centres and professorships. Several schools are often attached to one of these research centres or professorships. The professors from these schools, together with the lecturers, maintain contact with people from the professional field to ensure that your programme is furnished with the very latest information. Students have the opportunity to participate in the research carried out under the auspices of the professorships. If you want to know which research centres and professorships are attached to your programme, go to WWW.HANZE.NL.

Hanze Honours CollegeHanze UAS offers special study tracks under the name Hanze Honours College. These tracks are designed to encourage outstanding students to develop their talents to the best of their ability, stimulating both their IQ and their EQ: social skills, entrepreneurial spirit, personal drive, capitalising on opportunities. But they also need to demonstrate courage, out-of-the-box thinking and a winner’s mentality to get through this talent programme. It goes without saying that students wishing to follow one of these talent tracks must undergo a selection process. The Honours talent programme will give you a head start on the employment market and increase your chances of finding a top job. Students are

not given a separate certificate for the Honours talent programmes, but an endorsement appears on the Bachelor’s degree certificate and the subjects are listed on the student’s transcript of records.

Facilities UnitThe Facilities Unit (FB) employs more than 150 people, making it the largest and most multifaceted organisational unit of Hanze UAS. The FB is responsible for the accommodation and many of the student facilities. Every building has a service point where you can ask questions about the facilities.

Hanze UAS is an open institute of higher education, in which active tolerance is a key principle. Detection gates are not part of the deal. The location manager of each building is responsible for ensuring that the building remains in tiptop condition at all times. But they cannot do this on their own; everyone who uses the building - staff, students and visitors - has a duty to report anything untoward. Posters with instructions about what to do in the event of an emergency have been hung in every classroom.
