Purpose of the Exit Survey
The Higher Education Act has mandated higher education accountability for the production of high quality new teachers.
Response: Development of a survey of
candidates that self-assesses efficacy in performance as specified by the Entry Level Standards for Michigan Teachers Professional Standards for Michigan Teachers.
Survey Development
Committee of public and private institutions started in June 2004
Reviewed Samples of Exit Surveys– State of Ohio– State of Kentucky– Michigan State University– Wayne State University

Draft of Survey
Draft of survey completed in March 2005 Reviewed by committee members, MDE
staff, Teacher Ed faculty, along with MACTE and COATT members
Includes demographic information 37 questions – asking about levels of
preparedness and free response
Pilot of Survey
Institutions piloting the survey:– Central Michigan University– Ferris State University– Marygrove College– Michigan State University– University of Detroit Mercy– University of Michigan-Ann Arbor– Wayne State University
Pilot of Survey
Pilot was completed in May 2005 MDE committee reviewed results and made
suggested changes and updates Final changes to survey were completed in
fall of 2005
Initiation of Student Teacher Survey
First required participation for all colleges and universities occurred in December 2005
MDE sent the individual December 2005 results to the respective colleges and universities in January 2006
The collective results have not been analyzed by the committee as yet
The next offering of the survey will be in April-May 2006
