Most of the students that participated in campus focus groups stated they did not attend orientation because they were either overwhelmed by other academic aspects (such as registration) or they did not know an orientation was offered. No student believed orientation was mandatory. Those who did attend found it somewhat useful albeit uninteresting. Source: Student Focus Groups conducted at MX, KK, WR, & TR (2011)

Those students who prefer can attend a hour face-to-face session http://www.ivc.edu/orientation/guest.html Athens Technical College (GA): Overview of college ‘s mission, admissions, catalog, advisement, student expectations, registration and scheduling classes, drop/add, withdrawal, No show policy, payment plan and financial aid, id cards, services, and campus safety. Students complete online assessment at end of video to show proof of completion. Some video, mostly text, quizzes throughout. Video: 45 min. http://www.athenstech.edu/StudentAffairs/Online_Orientation/ *Washtenaw Community College (MI): Two part orientation where first part is the online video and second part is a 2 hour face-to-face session. The online contains 10 topics (welcome, using email, becoming a student, placement testing, advising, choosing classes, registering online, paying tuition, obtaining id, and student life. Multiple quizzes throughout to engage students and test their understanding. Video: 30 minutes https://www.wccnet.edu/academics/orientation/online/ College of Dupage (IL): Contains 8 topic areas that cover COD admissions and assessment, counseling and advising, registration and tuition, services, activities, and success tips. Offers multiple face-to-face sessions as well (optional). Video: 30 minutes http://www.cod.edu/multimedia/orientation/ Harper College (IL): Offers a pre-face-to-face short orientation video (5 minutes). Students learn specifically about testing, advising and registration process, “Welcome Week,” First-Year Experience program, orientation staff, how to be successful, and information for parents. Interactive with Frequently Asked Questions for each area. http://www.harpercollege.edu/orientation/17074_CNSO_orientation.swf
Student focus groups revealed students like the idea of an online orientation, but would prefer it as an option to face-to-face orientation. Face-to-face orientations should not be longer than two hours and should be led by students and include discussions with student alumni (what are graduates doing with their degree?), more interactive, include campus tour, and offer small group break out sessions. Source: Student Focus Groups conducted at MX, KK, WR, & TR (2011)
Video Topic Priority
Students felt they were given too much paperwork during orientation (most students tossed) and felt pertinent new student information should be organized in one central location on the college website and made available electronically (pdf). If they need the information, they can go there. They also felt face-to-face should focus on learning how to use technology such as Blackboard and my.ccc.edu Source: Student Focus Groups conducted at MX, KK, WR, & TR (2011)

If you suffer from test anxiety, you may want to remember simple breathing exercises and manage your time as you’re taking the exam” Student 1: “Don’t think of the placement test as a “real” test, but rather as an assessment to determine your level of preparedness for college-level classes.
