Presentation Notes
For most college students, the transition to college requires adjustments and not just of their academic habits and expectations. They often must study harder, improve their study habits, and take school more seriously, while also transitioning to being away from home, new living situation, new people, new food, and new experiences. Exciting – YES! Stressful? – probably at some point, in some way S&T Students are generally high ability and successful Success has been easy for many Without putting much time/effort into studying Supported by parents who provided structure, reminders, and maybe more hands-on assistance in addressing problems At S&T – they will most likely experience MORE material at a FASTER pace; more independent reading; more independence, need to network to find out information Learning HOW TO STUDY and manage themselves WHILE learning course content Many enjoyed being in the top of their class Coming to S&T They will be joining others who were at the top of THEIR class In this new peer group, they may feel uncomfortably ‘average’ May struggle or ‘fail’ for first time We need to consider how to best support them through that

THE W-CURVE & THE FIRST YEAR OF COLLEGE

Honeymoon

Culture Shock

Adjustment

Mental Isolation

Acceptance & Integration

Time

Presenter
Presentation Notes
The W‐Curve is a predictable pattern of stages occurs when a person experiences culture shock.  This is based upon research by Zeller and Mosier (1993). The W‐Curve can also be applied to first‐year college students and the phases they go through in adapting to a new culture.   It’s normal to have the ups and downs of the W‐Curve, and knowing about this may help make the transition easier.  At the first signs of culture shock, some first‐year students may think this means they have made a mistake about going to college or that they have chosen the wrong school.   Be ready for this when it happens! If we can help them see that this is just part of the journey that everyone goes through, they may be better able to take it all in stride. The Honeymoon begins once a student has chosen and been accepted to a college and builds as students attend Orientation programs, get their housing assignments, and begin planning for school to start. Although they may also experience some nervousness, the overall feeling is generally one of excitement and positive anticipation. Culture Shock sets in as the newness begins to wear off, and students begin to deal with the reality of the many adjustments they are experiencing. Roommate issues, cafeteria food, and the diversity of different backgrounds and cultures sets in. On the academic side the unfamiliar territory of the college classroom can cause stress in the form of large lecture classes, unclear guidelines for note taking and studying, and unfamiliar faculty can produce adjustment difficulties. Outside of the classroom, students may struggle with things that were easier at home, routine tasks that were taken for granted become problematic chores… like where to go shopping, get a haircut, or receive medial attention. Homesickness may increase. Your college student may have many personal issues to deal with in addition to focusing on the critical issue of academics: reworking relationships with parents, dealing with separation and its resultant anxiety and dealing with conflicting values. It is important to understand that this is a period of great potentially positive change, but it is also a period of more intense personal conflict and anxiety. As initial adjustments are made, first‐year students experience an upswing as they have successfully managed many of the issues that have come their way. Simply overcoming the culture shock stage brings about a sense of well‐being. They fall into a routine as they gain confidence in their ability to handle the academic and social environment of college. They feel they have regained some sense of control and normalcy in their lives. Conflicts and challenges may still come and go, but students are now feeling more in the swing of things. Mental Isolation: Although the physical environment has become more familiar, new students often relapse into a sense of isolation as they make comparisons between the university culture and home. This may arise after students go home for an extended break between semesters. Expect another round of homesickness, as first year students move through a second culture shock. This is a time of feeling caught between two worlds. This is hard because college is still not as comfortable as home used to be, and home is now not as familiar as it once was. Students may have a sense of not completely belonging in either place. It can be shocking to find that changes have happened at home, too, and not having been in on these changes on a day‐to‐day basis can be upsetting. Expect questions of doubt regarding the decision to attend, questions regarding major, career and academic potential may surface as the realities of first semester grades and test scores take over. Your students may want to retreat to a safer, more secure home environment. You can help by prepared for these questions, and supporting them through this second cultural shock, moving through their feelings of isolation, and integrating the new university culture. Acceptance, Integration, and Connectedness: Finally! As students become more involved in campus opportunities, gain some history with new friends and get to know some faculty and staff members, they begin to feel a true connection to the campus. They begin to have a more balanced and realistic view of the University, seeing and integrating the good experiences with the challenges. They begin to think that, generally, it’s a pretty good place to be. This usually brings less dependence on parents and families. A true sense of acceptance, integration, and connectedness occurs when a student has successfully adapted to their new world. Presentation Notes
When your student looks around they may not realize everything that goes into success. The rise of social media is not helping either - they see their peers on social media smiling and living their best lives. They compare themselves, and it can bring on bad feelings. Many of us have experienced scrolling through Facebook and comparing ourselves on social media. Help your students understand the reality that there is a whole lot of work that goes into success that they can’t see. We want to encourage a growth mindset in our students: A “fixed mindset” assumes that our character, intelligence, and creative ability are static givens which we can’t change. Striving for success and avoiding failure at all costs become a way of maintaining the sense of being smart or skilled A “growth mindset” thrives on challenge and sees it as a springboard for growth and for stretching existing abilities. When students believe they can get smarter, they understand that effort makes them stronger. Therefore they put in extra time and effort, and that leads to higher achievement. Studies prove a person’s mindset can indeed change from fixed to growth, and it leads to increased motivation and achievement.

Some signs for concerns (on slide) If your student is struggling, the goal is to figure out what’s going on. . . and respond appropriately Expected adjustment issues? Normal development? Healthy growing pains? Something more serious? If a student is succeeding well enough and finding a major that they are interested in and pursuing meaningful goals then we have a "green light". It's time for a plan if a student is not achieving at least 2.0 GPA or progressing academically.

Who here wants your student to eventually get a job? Raise your hands! For many, the overall goal of attending college is to grow intellectually and as a person and often, Ultimately, to secure rewarding employment. Our Career Opportunities and Employer Relations office has been ranked in the top 20 in the nation for many years. We are ranked #1 Return on Investment In Missouri and #2 (out-of-state) in the ROI of Best Value Colleges in Missouri by Payscale, Inc. We had nearly 1,000 students complete co-ops and internships last year with salaries between $3-4,000. We also have one of the largest career fairs in the mid-west. Last fall we had 331 companies attend our career fair event. My best advice is for students to engage with COER office and events early and often, starting during their first year. They work really hard to save you time and money! We have implemented innovative strategies to make course materials more affordable. The Early Bird Textbook Reservations program is the easiest way to get course materials your students need and pick them up in a handy to-go bundle when you get to campus. They access your class schedule before the start of classes and get your course materials ready for you. They pull the most cost effective course materials available and send you an email when your bundle is ready for pick-up. Last year, choosing used, rental, or digital saved S&T students $1.2 million. Another way the S&T store saves you $ is with our digital content solution, autoAccess. AutoAccess is a collaboration between your professor, the publisher, and the S&T Store to provide the required course materials digitally at the lowest cost. After you enroll in an AutoAccess course, you will automatically have access to the course materials on the first day through Canvas. Your student account will be charged for the cost of the content. It’s that easy – you don’t have to do anything else but go to class. Every student enrolled in an AutoAccess course saves an average of $100. You can also save big on MinerTech technology and gear, August 2 - 4, during the Missouri State Sales Tax Holiday! No state sales tax is applied to most technology, clothing, and school supplies purchases. You can purchase your gear during the tax holiday event, or preorder your S&T technology, clothing, and supplies. If you are planning to buy tech for your student for graduation gifts or for college, this is a great way to go. The Store also has great warranties and repair services. They’ve heard it all, everything from a cup of milk spilt onto a keyboard and a laptop falling from the window of a moving car. You have time to stop by the S&T store this afternoon to check it out.
