    ATTENDANCE PROCEDURES

Regular daily attendance is important for you to be successfulat Earl L. Vandermeulen High School. Teachers have carefullyplanned and organized the academic lessons and class work, which includes assigning specific materials for each period.

The high school will be implementing the Districts attendancepolicy and will hold all students accountable. All students areexpected to be in regular attendance daily.

Students who are absent, tardy, or leave early from class orschool without an excuse will face appropriate disciplinaryconsequences in accordance with the District Code of Conductas well as parent/guardian notification.

Definition ATED - The acronym used to refer to studentabsences, tardiness, or early departures in reporting to

    school or class.

EXCUSED AND UNEXCUSED ABSENCES, TARDINESS AND

EARLY DEPARTURES:Excused ATEDs are defined as absences, tardiness, and earlydepartures from class or school, verified in writing by a parent, due to personal illness, illness or death in the family, impassable roads or weather, religious observance, quarantine, required court appearances, attendance at health clinics, approved college visits, approved cooperative work programs,

military obligations, or such other reasons as may be approvedby the Principal.

All other ATEDs are considered unexcused. All ATEDs must beaccounted for. It is the parents responsibility to notify theschool office within 24 hours of the ATED and to provide atimely written excuse upon the students return to school.

If you are absent, your parent or guardian must callthe Attendance Office between 7:00 and 10:00 a.m.(631-476-4400 ext. 209). It is the parents/guardians

responsibility to notify the attendance office on the nextschool day of the ATED, and to provide a written excuseupon the students return to school. All absence notes willbe kept on file.

At the high school level, it is the students responsibility toprovide documentation for all in-school appointments thatwill prevent a student from attending a class prior todismissal from a class.

Attendance will be taken during each class period at thehigh school. Students not in class, but in attendance, willbe reported to the administration as cutting class.

    LATENESS TO SCHOOL:

Any student who arrives after the 7:25 a.m. bell isconsidered late and should sign in at the securitydesk located in the gym lobby. At that time, thestudent will be given a pass to class.

Students who are frequently late to school will be subject todisciplinary action.

Tardy students should have an excuse in writing from

parents explaining the reason for being tardy so thatdetention is not assigned.

    LEAVING EARLY FROM SCHOOL:

Early dismissal for any student will be granted with apersonal request from your parent and/or a note that willbe verified. In the case you are ill and you are not able

  • 8/3/2019 Student Planner Text 2011-2012

to attend class, you must report to the Nurses Officeimmediately.

    PRE-ARRANGED ABSENCE OR EARLY DISMISSAL:

If your parent would like you to be absent from school orto leave early, your parent must make a request to theschool prior to the absence. Except in the case of anemergency, this must be completed, by phone, at leastby 8:51 a.m. of the day in question. A parent mustpersonally sign his/her child out of the building in the

attendance office, if he/she is requesting early dismissal.

CONSEQUENCES OF EXCESSIVE ATEDS:The Principal or designee will contact the students parents andthe students guidance counselor in the event that a studentsrecord reveals excessive ATEDs, excused and/or unexcused.Excessive ATEDs are defined as:

three consecutive ATEDs three or more ATEDs in a month

ten or more ATEDs in a school year

They shall remind parents of the attendance policy, explain theramifications of excessive ATEDs, stress the importance of classattendance, and discuss appropriate intervention strategies tocorrect the situation.

Unexcused ATEDs will result in disciplinary action consistentwith the districts code of conduct. Those penalties mayinclude, for example, detention or in-school suspension.Students may also be denied the privilege of participating in orattending extracurricular events.

    ATTENDANCE/GRADE POLICY:

The Board of Education recognizes an important relationshipbetween class attendance and student performance.Consequently, each marking period a students final grade may

be based on classroom participation as well as studentsperformance on homework, tests, papers, projects, etc.

Students are expected to attend all scheduled classes.Consistent with the importance of classroom participation,

  • 8/3/2019 Student Planner Text 2011-2012

    8/24

unexcused ATEDs will affect a students class participationgrade for the marking period.

At the high school level, any student with more than nineunexcused ATEDs for one-half year or 18 unexcused ATEDs fora full year will not receive credit for that course. However, students with properly excused ATEDs may make up the workfor each ATED in which case those ATEDs will not count towardthe minimum attendance standard.

In implementing the policy set forth above, students who are

unable to attend school or a class on a given day due to theirparticipation in a school-sponsored activity (i.e., music lessons, field trips), may arrange with their teachers to make up anywork missed. This also applies to any student who is absent, tardy, or leaves early from school or a class due to illness orany other excused reason.

All students with an excused ATED are expected, upon theirreturn, to consult with their teachers regarding missed work.

Only those students with excused ATEDs will be given the

opportunity to make up a test or other missed work and/or turnin a late assignment for inclusion in their final grade. Make upopportunities must be completed by a date specified by thestudents teacher for the class in question.

    CLASS ATTENDANCE:

We recognize the vital role that classroom attendance and

participation have in the educational process of the student.Classroom discussion and student interaction are componentsin the delivery of instruction; therefore, they should be includedin the evaluation process of the students knowledge of the

course work. For various reasons, students are absent fromclass. Whether these absences are excused or unexcused, theystill have a negative impact on the learning process. Studentsmust be afforded the opportunity to offset this negative impactthrough make-up work and assignments. This opportunitydoes not replace the original presentation/participation

situation. Each class will have a percent of the student's

  • 8/3/2019 Student Planner Text 2011-2012

quarterly grade determined by the student's participation inthat class.

If a student is not in attendance 85% of the school year andthe interim grade earned by the student (includingparticipation) is failing, then the student may be assigned agrade of incomplete and credit for the course withheld.

It is the responsibility of the classroom teacher to inform thestudent and the student's parents regarding the attendance ofthe student.

    LATENESS TO CLASS:

Students who arrive late to class disruptinstruction. Students who are frequently late to classwill be considered in violation of school rules andregulations and appropriate disciplinary action will betaken by the administration.
