Sir Wilfrid Laurier

Our school is named after an amazing Canadian named Sir Wilfrid Laurier. Laurier was the seventh Prime Minister of Canada. He served from 1896 to 1911. Canada was a new country when Laurier became Prime Minister. He strongly believed that the twentieth century would belong to Canada and that it would become a powerful country by the end of the century, and he was correct. He was the Prime Minister who began Canada’s road to independence from England. He also wanted Canada to remain independent from the United States. Laurier was a bilingual French Canadian and he encouraged young people to become bilingual. When he was Prime Minister, Laurier arranged for Manitoba to have bilingual schools. Our school has a very strong French Immersion program - one that he would have been proud to

see. Canada became a strong independent country with a bilingual population during Laurier’s time and our school represents his vision for the future.

Teachers and other school staff have been granted authority under the Education Act, to require academic diligence and proper behaviour from students.

The teaching, secretarial, custodial and cafeteria staff all work diligently to make your high school years happy. They deserve courtesy and respect.

If the student refuses to give their name when asked, the result will be a suspension.

SPECIFIC SCHOOL POLICIES AND PROCEDURES Expectations for Student Behaviour

Accidents ~ An accident of any nature must be reported promptly to the office by the student and the teacher in charge of the class or activity. An accident report must be completed. Announcements ~ Are made over the P.A. system at the end of Period 1. Announcements to be made on behalf of a school team, club or organization must be written on an announcement form and signed by the appropriate staff advisor or coach. These forms are available in the main office and should be turned into the main office the day before the reading of the announcement. All students and staff should sit still and listen during announcements. Assemblies ~ Are a regularly scheduled part of the curriculum, and are designed to be educational as well as entertaining. Regardless of the type of program, courtesy demands all students be respectful and appreciative. Talking, whispering, whistling, stamping feet and booing are discourteous activities during an assembly and are not permitted. Seating will be by class groups and under the supervision of each classroom teacher. Books should be left in the classroom. The assembly day schedule will normally be used when assemblies are held. Assessment ~ Work diligently on projects and assignments as directed. Ensure that individual work submitted is your own work and not copied from another person or source (see the Assessment and Evaluation Policy in this planner). Buses ~ Students are only able to ride on their assigned bus and should do so in a safe and non-distracting manner. Please be sure to follow all bus rules. Failure to do so could result in removal from the bus or disciplinary actions within the school. Policies and procedures and all things related to transportation can be found at www.mybigyellowbus.ca. Got questions? Check there first – chances are the information you need is conveniently located on the website. Information can also be attained at 519-649-1160.

Cafeteria ~ The kitchen opens at approximately 7:30 a.m. Please use the cafeteria with care, courtesy and respect for others. Sit on the chairs provided and place garbage and recyclables in the appropriate containers. Cannabis ~ Please see our Tobacco, Cannabis and Smoke-Free Environment policy Co-Curricular Expectations ~ We strongly believe that it is in the best interest of our students to maintain a strong academic standing and be in regular attendance in all scheduled classes. Co-curricular activities (sports, clubs, and field trips) may cause students to miss classes. Therefore, if after encouragement and counseling a student is unable to maintain a strong academic average or unwilling to attend classes on a regular basis, the student may be withdrawn from the co-curricular program until such time that the student’s achievement shows a significant improvement.

Computers ~ Students are to use computers and internet only in support of education and educational research and in a manner consistent with the educational objectives of the Thames Valley District School Board. Do not transmit any material in violation of Federal or Provincial legislation. Peripheral devices such as laptops or tablets are not to be attached to the network wired connection. Vandalism of school computer equipment - either through physical damage or by "hacking" activity - is strictly prohibited. Concussion ~ In response to Ministry of Education requirements and in support of our existing school safety procedures, schools are required to follow certain steps whenever a student suffers a concussion or whenever a concussion is suspected. Parents can access Concussion Policies and Procedures through the Board’s website or by contacting the school and requesting a copy. As with any potential injury, our first goal is prevention; concussion awareness and prevention is part of ongoing professional training for staff and is integrated into students' Health and Physical Education curriculum. Since concussion can affect a student's ability to learn or to participate in activities, schools will work with parents and medical contacts to assist any student who has suffered concussion. If an injury occurs on a weekend or after school, parents are asked to inform the school so that appropriate accommodations and support can be provided. Questions can be directed to the school Principal. Course Changes ~ Once the school's timetable is completed, course changes will be permitted ONLY in very unusual circumstances i.e., errors in timetabling, failure of a course, need for a course at a different level of difficulty. Students in Grades 9, 10 and 11 will take eight courses each year (4 per semester). Students in Grade 12 (i.e., have completed at least 24 credits) who wish to drop a course must request permission to do so through a Guidance Counsellor. Students who are requesting a change to part-time status (less than 3 courses per semester) must get permission from a Vice-Principal. Part-time status will affect a student’s athletic eligibility. See the Athletic Director for details. Students are expected to continue in attendance in all timetabled courses until course changes are made through Student Services and all paperwork is signed. Dances ~ Are organized for the benefit of the student body by the Student Council with the permission of the school administration. Dances are restricted to students of Laurier. A limited number of guest passes are available for some dances. One guest may be sponsored and accompanied to the dance by an eligible student. In such cases, a guest must be signed in prior to the dance. A guest verification form must be signed by the Vice-Principal from the guest’s Secondary School to attest that the guest is a student in good standing. Student cards are required for admittance to all dances. Admission ceases at 8:00 p.m. Students will not be admitted after this time without prior approval from Administration. Students are not permitted to return to the dance once they have left the school building. Students must check their coats and bags at the coat check area. No one shall go to their locker for any reason. Neither Laurier S.S. nor the Student Council is liable for anything lost or stolen items at the dance. Dances are a school-sponsored activity, and, as such, will be conducted according to the policies of the school and the Code of Conduct and the school Dance Contract. Please remember to wear clothing that is acceptable at school, attend all classes on the day of the dance and dance in an acceptable manner. Any student that is suspended from a school dance will not be allowed to attend any other school dances. Students must attend all of their classes on the day of the dance, or they will not be permitted to enter the dance. Attendance will be checked at the door.

ECOLE SECONDAIRE SIR WILFRID LAURIER SECONDARY

SCHOOL

Assessment & Evaluation Policy

A: INTRODUCTION Sir Wilfrid Laurier Secondary School is committed to assisting students in reaching their full potential. The Ontario government outlines this commitment in the Growing Success document. The following information outlines Laurier’s commitment to this document and ensures consistent assessment and evaluation for all students (Growing Success, p.1). Learning to take responsibility for their achievement and improvement is an important part of each student’s education, regardless of their circumstances. B: ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES FOR STUDENTS

1. Mastering the skills and concepts connected with learning requires the following:

Ongoing practice

Response to feedback

Personal reflection and commitment to learning

Page 25: Student Planner 2019 - 2020 Sir Wilfrid Laurier Secondary ...laurier.tvdsb.ca/en/resourcesGeneral/Laurier... · Prime Minister Zyler MacDonald, Saleh Bhatti Minister of Finance Tori

Rams Achieve More Success 25

Willingness to try new activities

Working with peers

Following subject-specific safety practices

2. Learning skills are an important component of success in secondary school. “As students move through the grades, they develop and then consolidate their learning skills and work habits in preparation for postsecondary education and the world of work” (Growing Success, p.12).

3. Students’ attitudes can have a significant effect on learning and achievement of the expectations.

4. Advance communication with all subject teachers is

necessary when missing any assessment or evaluation.

5. Late and missed assignments:

Students are responsible for requesting missed assignment descriptions and rubrics if absent.

Students are to seek clarification on assignment expectations and success criteria.

Students are to respect major assignment deadlines and must respect the consequences for late submission and incompletion of major assignments.

Students are to use class time allotted for assignment completion in a productive manner. Students who fail to do so will not be granted extensions.

Students who are unable to meet assignment deadlines due to extenuating circumstances should request an extension from the teacher at least one day prior to an assignment deadline.

Minor assessments are an important part of the formative assessment process and deadlines for these assessments should be respected in order for students to receive timely feedback.

C: LATE AND MISSED ASSIGNMENTS

For major assignments (assignments that address multiple learning expectations over an extended period of instructional time) in a specific course, teachers may, after considering mitigating factors, and implementing appropriate strategies, impose mark deductions as outlined below.

The process for the deduction of marks for major assignments will be as follows:

o 10% of the final mark earned by the student for the first school day that the assignment is deemed as late;

o A further 5% per school day of the final mark earned by the student, to a maximum of 4 subsequent school days following the due date of the major assignment.

o The total number of days for which deduction of marks will apply is 5 days.

After providing multiple opportunities for the completion of the major assignment, the teacher may assign a mark of zero on the assignment after it is five days late.

D: MISSED TESTS, PRESENTATIONS, AND IN-CLASS EVALUATIONS Advance Notice

Students who are aware in advance (e.g., dental/doctor appointment, field trip, athletics, etc.) that they will be absent on the day of a scheduled evaluation must make arrangements (before the evaluation date) with their teacher in order to complete an evaluation on an alternate day and time.

A note (signed by a parent/guardian if the student is under 18) must be provided to the teacher if the absence is not school related. This note must include the reason for the absence, and it must also indicate that the parent/guardian of the student is aware that an evaluation will be missed.

Students should expect to complete the evaluation the first day back to school following the absence.

Page 27: Student Planner 2019 - 2020 Sir Wilfrid Laurier Secondary ...laurier.tvdsb.ca/en/resourcesGeneral/Laurier... · Prime Minister Zyler MacDonald, Saleh Bhatti Minister of Finance Tori

Rams Achieve More Success 27

Unexpected Absence

Students who are unexpectedly absent on the day of an evaluation must have their absence reported through Safe Arrival and provide a note (signed by a parent/guardian if the student is under 18) to their teacher on the first day back. This note must include the reason for the absence, and it must also indicate that the parent/guardian of the student is aware that an evaluation was missed.

Students should expect to complete the evaluation the first day back to school following the absence.

Consequences

Failure to provide the necessary documentation, as indicated above, may result in the student being assigned a mark of zero for the evaluation.

Students who miss evaluations with an unexpected absence may be referred to their Vice Principal.

E: FINAL EXAMS / ASSESSMENTS The final examination time period must be held and respected. Students must be present to write their final exams/assessments during the exam period stated in the school calendar (January and June, also November and April for half-credit courses). Exams will not be rescheduled for family vacations or early exit to seek employment. A medical note is required for missed final assessments due to illness. Unsupported missed final exams/assessments will result in a mark of zero. Any special requests must be made in writing to the Principal. F: CHEATING AND PLAGIARISM Cheating and plagiarism are serious academic offences. Students are responsible for completing all tests, exams, assignments and presentations in a way that shows the process work and finished product are their own original work. Students should seek assistance with assignment expectations and review work before submitting it in order to ensure that plagiarism has not occurred. If a requirement of the assignment is to provide

citations and a bibliography, it is expected that students will meet these expectations when they submit their work. These are examples of acts of plagiarism:

Turning in someone else’s work as your own

Copying words or ideas from a source without giving credit

Giving incorrect information about the source of quotations or ideas

Not using quotation marks when information is directly quoted from a source.

All students have access to the TVDSB document On Your Own which provides complete information about plagiarism, accurate use of citations and how to create a bibliography in MLA or APA format. Students may use electronic bibliography and citation programs but should be aware that they are ultimately responsible for ensuring that their work follows the expectations outlined by their teachers. Students may be asked to submit work to Turnitin as part of the assignment. Personal electronic devices are not allowed in classrooms for any formal evaluation unless authorized by the supervising teacher. Having a personal electronic device may result in a mark of zero on an exam or test. Growing Success outlines that consequences for academic dishonesty may escalate based on the following mitigating factors:

The grade level of the student and course type;

The maturity of the student;

The number or frequency of incidents;

The individual circumstances of the student.

Teachers, in consultation with the school administration, will determine the appropriate consequences. The final decision resides with the school Principal. For all cases of plagiarism and cheating, teachers will communicate information to the parents/guardians about the infraction and the consequences. Specific actions which will be taken are as follows:

Teachers will discuss the individual situation with the student;

The principal will be informed;

With repeated incidents, the teacher and principal will discuss the individual situation with the student and parent(s)/guardian(s).

Consequences will be based on the factors outlined above and may include the following:

Redoing part/all of the assignment;

Completing an alternate assignment;

Loss of marks;

A mark of zero;

Suspension.
