PURPOSEOFTHEHANDBOOKThishandbookhasbeendesignedtosupplementtheUniversityofMissouri(MU)websitewithdetailsabouttheSchoolofSocialWork’sPhDProgram,includingexpectations,policiesandprocedures.ThefacultyandstaffoftheSchoolofSocialWorkprovideeducation,leadership,mentoring,andguidancetoassiststudentsinobtainingthemaximumpossiblebenefitfromgraduateeducation.Foradditionaladviceand/orclarificationofpoliciesandprocedures,studentsshouldconsultwiththeirassignedacademicadvisor,thePhDprogramchair,orprogramstaff.
II. THESCHOOLOFSOCIALWORKINTHEUNIVERSTYCONTEXTTheUniversityofMissouriTradition
TheUniversityofMissouriSystemhasprovidedteaching,researchandservicetoMissouriandthenationsince1839.TheuniversitywasthefirstpubliclysupportedinstitutionofhighereducationestablishedintheLouisianaPurchaseterritory.ItsphilosophyofeducationwasshapedinaccordancewiththeidealsofThomasJefferson,whowasanearlyproponentofpublichighereducation.Today,theUniversityofMissouriSystemisoneofthenation’slargestandmostprestigiouspublicresearchuniversities,withnearly70,000studentsonfourcampusesandhundredsofthousandsservedstatewidethroughUniversityofMissouriExtensionandUniversityofMissouriHealthSystem.
History
MissouriUniversity(Mizzou),establishedinColumbiain1839,istheoldeststateuniversitywestoftheMississippiRiver.MUisthelargestofthefourcampusesoftheUniversityofMissouriSystem.OtherunitsinthesystemincludeTheUniversityofMissouri‐St.Louis(UMSL),TheUniversityofMissouri‐KansasCity(UMKC)andtheMissouriUniversityofScienceandTechnology(MUST)inRollaMO.
TheOfficeofGraduateStudies
MUMaster’sdegreeswerefirstawardedin1846.Thefirstdoctorofphilosophydegreewasawardedin1899.MUisoneofthemostcomprehensiveanddiverseuniversitiesintheUnitedStates.AsamemberoftheAssociationofAmericanUniversities(AAU)andaCarnegieFoundationAdvancementofTeachingclassified“ComprehensiveDoctoralwithMedical/Veterinarydegrees,”MUisapremierproviderofgraduateandprofessionaleducation.
TheUniversityoffersmanydevelopmentalexperiencesoutsidetheclassroom,includingconcerts,theatricalproductions,fineartandculturalexhibits,andfilms.Manycampusgroupssponsorspecializedseminarsand

lecturesbydistinguishedvisitingscholars.Approximatelyone‐quarterofMU’sbudgetcomesfromstateandfederalappropriations.Thesourcesoftheremainderofthebudgetincludeprivategifts,grants,studenteducationalfees,auxiliaryenterprisesandUniversityHospital.MU’sfederalfundingforresearchprojectshasincreased66percentsince1997;theUniversitynowhas$129millioninongoingresearchprojectsandenjoysbroadsupportfromitsalumni.TheUniversityisdistinguishedfromotherpublicinstitutionsinthestateandintheregionbythescopeandqualityofitsgraduateprogramsanditsscholarlyandcreativeproductivity.Closelyinterwovengraduateeducationandresearchenterprisesprovideacontextforhigh‐qualityundergraduateandprofessionaleducation,andforeffectiveoutreachsensitivetotheneedsofthestate.

OurBSWandMSWprogramsareaccreditedbytheCouncilofSocialWorkEducation(CSWE),thenationalaccreditingbodyforprofessionalsocialworkeducation.OurPhDprogramistheonlysocialworkdoctoralprogramavailableataMissouripublicinstitution.
BSWProgram
Whilesociology,psychologyandrelateddegreesprovidegeneralizedpreparationforanumberofcareers,aBachelorofSocialWork(BSW)degreeprovidesyouwithspecific,targetedcoursesthattrainyouintreatingthewholepersonwithinthecontextofhisorherenvironment.BSWstudentsreceivetraininginadvocacy,assessment,casemanagement,communityoutreach,crisisintervention,intake/referral,interviewing,problemsolving,researchandserviceplanning.
MSWProgram
TheUniversityofMissouri’sMSWProgrampreparescompetent,effectiveandethicalsocialworkprofessionalleadersforsocialchange.TheMSWProgramemphasizesacommitmenttoenhancinghumanwell‐beingbyalleviatingsocialproblems,embracingdiversityandpromotingsocialandeconomicjusticewithsystemsofallsizesthroughadvancedclinicalsocialworkpracticeandpolicyplanningandadministrativesocialworkpractice.
PhDProgram
Likemanyotherstates,Missourifacesanumberofsocioeconomicanddemographicchallengesresultingintheneedfornew,effectivesocialservices. MU’sSocialWorkPh.D.programistheonlyprogramlocatedinaMissouripublichighereducationinstitution.ThePh.D.programpreparesresearchersandscholarstrainedatthehighestlevelofcompetenceforresearchandhighereducationcareers.

Theprogramisresearchfocusedandveryselective.Admissiontotheschoolisjudgedonthebasisoffitbetweenanapplicant’sproposedcareerandtheabilityoftheschooltoassistinachievementofthosecareergoals.TheprogrambuildsuponMU’smissionofservicetothestateasaland‐grantuniversityandextendsitintothe21stcentury.TheresearchfocusoftheMUdoctoralprogramisinkeepingwithMU’sstatureasaCarnegieDoctoral/ResearchExtensiveinstitutionandamemberoftheAssociationofAmericanUniversities,TheSchoolisalsoamemberoftheSt.LouisGroupforExcellenceinSocialWorkResearchandEducation,anelitegroupofresearchorientedschoolsofsocialwork.
Thefacultyhassettheschool’smissiontobedevelopingleadershipforsocialandeconomicjustice.In2000,theschoollauncheditsnationallydistinctivePhDprogramwithanemphasisonresearch,teaching,andassistancetothestateofMissourionstatesocialpolicy.Between2000and2010,fournewfacultymemberswithearneddoctoratesfromResearch/DoctoralExtensiveinstitutionsjoinedtheschool.Infall2012,threeadditionalscholarswithcredentialsfromResearch/DoctoralExtensiveinstitutionsjoinedthefacultyalongwithanewlyappointedDirectorforResearch.In2015‐2016,fournewtenuretrackfacultymembersjointheSchool.In2015,twofacultymembersarenewlyelectedtothedoctoralfacultybringingthenumbertoninememberswhohavedoctoralfacultyappointments.

SelectionofDoctoralDissertationCommitteeTheDoctoralDissertationCommitteemustberecommendedbythestudent’sadvisorandapprovedbythedoctoralprogramdirectorandtheOfficeofGraduateStudiesafterthesuccessfulcompletionofthequalifyingexamandbeforeoneyearhaselapsedfollowingthestudent’sfirstregistrationasadoctoralstudent.TheDoctoralDissertationCommitteeshallbecomposedofaminimumoffourmembersoftheMUgraduatefacultyofwhichatleastthreemembersarefromtheSchoolofSocialWork(includingtheadvisor)andoneoutsidememberfromadifferentMUprogram.OftheTHREESchoolofSocialWorkmembers,atleasttwomustbedoctoralfacultyincludingthechairandoneothergraduatefacultymember.AdditionalcommitteememberswithspecializedexpertisewhodonotmeetthecriteriafortheMUgraduatefacultyordoctoralfacultymayserveonadoctoralcommitteeasafifthorsixthmember,attherequestofthedissertationcommittee’schairandwithspecialpermissionoftheAssociateViceChancellorforGraduateStudies.Allmembersofthedissertationcommitteemustbeintimatelyinvolvedandwillactivelyparticipateintheactivitiesofthedoctoralstudentinvolvingtheirdissertation’spreparationanddefense.Dissertationcommitteemembersmaycallforameetingofthefullcommitteeatanytimetodiscussthestudent’sprogress.
V. ADMISSIONREQUIREMENTSAdmissiontothePhDprogramislimitedanddeterminedonacompetitivebasis.ThedoctoralfacultyoftheSchool,sittingasacommitteeasawhole,makesadmissiondecisions.ApplicationdeadlineisJanuary15th.Applicantsarestronglyencouragedtoapplyearlierforadmissiontotakefulladvantageofavailablescholarshipfundsandassistantshippositions.
Criteriausedinassessinganapplicant’squalificationsincludeallofthefollowing:
1. Applicantsarerequiredtoholdamaster’sdegree.Applicantswhohaveamaster’sdegree,butnotanMSWdegreefromaCSWEaccreditedprogramwillberequiredtotakeupto12credithoursofMSWelectivecoursesaspartoftheirdoctoralelectivecourses.Non‐master’sdegreeholdersarestronglyadvisedtoconsiderenteringtheMastersofSocialWork(MSW)Degreeprogram.
2. Researchmethodsandstatisticscoursestakenintheprevious5yearswithagradeofatleastaB.

3. Currentcurriculumvitaorresume.Aminimumoftwoyears’postmasterspracticeexperienceispreferred.
4. Officialcopiesofallundergraduateandgraduatetranscripts.Aminimumgradepointaverageof3.0forthefinal60hoursofthebaccalaureatedegreegenerallywillberequired.Aminimumof3.5GPAforgraduateworkwillberecommended.

VI. PHDPROGRAMREQUIREMENTSProgressionthroughtheDoctoralProgramThePhDprogramisdesignedsothatstudentsmakingacademicprogresscancompletetheprograminthreeacademicyears.Manystudentstakeanadditionalyeartocompletetheprogramrelatedtothecomplexityoftheirdissertation.StudentshaveatotaloftenyearstofinishthePhDprogramperTheOfficeofGraduateStudiespolicies.Thefollowingprovidesdetaileddescriptionsoftheelementsofthedoctoralprogram.QualifyingExaminationWhenfirstadmittedtotheSSWprogram,studentsareadmittedas“graduatestudentstakingdoctoralclasses.”Thestudentmustpassthequalifyingexaminationstobefullyengagedinthedoctoraldegreeprogram.Followingsuccessfulcompletionofthequalifyingexaminations,studentsbecome“qualifieddoctoralstudents”andarepermittedtonameadissertationcommitteechairandwiththeirchairselectadoctoralcommittee.Thestudent’schairwillthencompleteandsubmittheD1form.
Thestudent’scommitteeandthestudentwillthendevelopaplanofstudyandcompleteforfilingtheD2form.Untilsuccessfulcompletionofthequalifyingexamination,thedirectorofdoctoralstudiesoramemberofthe

school’sdoctoralfacultywhoisappointedastheadvisoractsasthestudentadvisorinallcurriculumchoices.
QualifyingExamProceduresandStandardsTheDoctoralProgramCommittee(DPC)hasestablished(approvedJanuary2010&2012)thefollowingproceduresforthequalifyingexaminationeffectiveforallstudentsadmittedtotheprograminthefall2010andafter.
Theexamwillbefour‐fivequestionsaskingthestudenttorespondtostimulusmaterialdealingwithanareaofsocialconcern.Twoormoresetsofstimulusmaterialwillbeprovidedtothestudentsseven(7)daysbeforetheexam.Studentsmayselectonestimulusarticleonwhichtheirexamwillbebased.Theexaminationwillbeanessayresponsetoeachseparatequestionbaseduponthefourcorecourses.Theexaminationwillbeconductedononedayfrom9AMuntil5PMintheSchoolofSocialWork.TheDPCwillestablishthespecificdayinthesummerfollowingthecompletionoffoundationcoursesbutbeforethebeginningofthesummercoursesonwhichthequalifyingexaminationwillbegiven.
Ontheexamday,eachstudentwillbeassignedanidentificationnumberknownonlytothepersonsresponsibleforproctoringtheexam.Thisnumberwillbetheonlyidentifyinginformationontheexamination.Computerequipmentwillbeprovidedforeachstudentalongwitharemovablestoragedeviceonwhichthecompleteexamwillbestored.Thecompletedexamonthestoragedevicewillbegiventothedoctoralprogramsupportperson(DPSP)orthedoctoralprogramdirector(DPD)notlaterthan5PMonthedayoftheexam.Thestudentmayrequestanemailedcopyoftheircompletedexamination.
Twofacultymemberswillbeassignedtogradeeachcompletedexam.Thegraderswillworkindependentlyonthe‘blinded’reviewandgrading.TheywillsendtheirnumericalscoreandanycommentstheywishtomaketotheDPDelectronicallyorinwritingusingtheidentificationnumberontheexam.
Gradingwillbeonanumericalscalefrom1.0(low)to4.0(high).Studentsmustachieveameanscoreof2.5toachievea‘pass.’Incaseswherethereismajordisagreementbetweenthetwoinitialgraders,athirdgraderwillbeassignedandthescoreaveragedamongthethreegradesassigned.
Studentswhofailtoachieveameanscoreof2.5orhigherwillnotbeeligibletoenrollinthefollowingfallsemesterortocontinueinthedoctoralprogram.
TheDPDwillberesponsibleforalllogisticsandproceduresrelatedtoscheduling,provisionofspaceandequipment,includingrequestedandofficiallyapprovedaccommodationsforstudentswithdisabilities,andforarrangementofproctoringoftheexams.
Aonehourbreakatmid‐daywillbeavailable.Studentsarefreetotakebreaksasdesired.

Studentswillnotbepermittedtouseanyoutsideresourcesincludingbutnotlimitedtotheinternet,books,classnotes,orpreparedmaterials.TheexamwillnotrequireAPAreferences,footnotes,orcitations.Eachstudentwillbeaskedtosignanhonorstatementthattheydonotuseprohibitedmaterialsormedia.StudentsmusttaketheexaminationonthedateandatthelocationtobeestablishedbytheDPDorDPC.Studentsmusttakethequalifyingexaminationatthefirstadministrationdatefollowingtheirsuccessfulcompletionofthefourcorecourses.

ResidencyRequirementAdoctoralstudentmustcompleteatleasttwonine‐hoursemestersorthreesix‐hoursemestersinan18‐monthperiodatMU.Allcoursestakentosatisfytheresidencyrequirementmustbeapprovedbythestudent’sdoctoralprogramcommittee.
Credit‐HourRequirementMUrequiresaminimumof72semesterhoursbeyondthebaccalaureatedegreeforthePhD.Thestudent’sdoctoraldissertationcommitteemustapproveallcourseworkusedtosatisfythecredit‐hourrequirementandmayrequireadditionalcourseworkbeyondtheseminimums.

Effectivefallsemester2000,aPhDstudentmustsuccessfullycompletethecomprehensiveexaminationwithinaperiodoffiveyearsbeginningwiththefirstsemesterofenrollmentasaPhDstudent.Individualdepartmentsorareaprogramsmaystipulateashortertimeperiod.ForanextensionofthistimethestudentmustpetitiontheOfficeofGraduateStudiesbysubmittingarequesttotheadvisorwho,inturn,submitsawrittenrecommendationtotheOfficeofGraduateStudieswhichhasbeenendorsedbythedepartmentorareaprogramdirectorofgraduatestudies.
2. Inaddition,thedissertationmustbecompletedwithinfiveyearsofpassingthecomprehensiveexamination.Onpetitionofthecandidateandthecandidate’sdepartment,anextensionoftimemaybegrantedbytheOfficeofGraduateStudies.Departmentsspecificallyreservetherighttore‐certifycurrencyinthediscipline.Allrequestsforextensionsshouldbeendorsedbythedepartmentaldirectorofgraduatestudiesandaccompaniedbyadescriptionoftheprocesswherebycurrencyinthedisciplineiscertified,ifrequiredbythedepartment.
AnnualReviewSince2006,theOfficeofGraduateStudieshasrequiredthatallgraduatestudentsfileannualreportsontheiracademicperformance,degreeprogrammilestonesandrelatedachievementsinscholarship,researchandcreativework.StudentsusetheGraduateStudentProgressSystem(https://gsps.missouri.edu/)(GSPS)todocumenttheirprogresstowarddegreecompletion.Facultymentors(advisers)arerequiredtoreviewtheiradvisees'annualreportstoassesssatisfactoryprogresstowarddegreecompletion.Thedirectorofgraduatestudiesand/ordepartmentchairmayalsoreviewstudentprogress.Eachdivision/area/departmentdegreeprogrammustinformallstudentsoftheannualprogressreportingrequirement.Thisincludesprinted,publishedorelectronicmaterialsprovidedtograduatestudents.

SatisfactoryprogressThedefinitionof“satisfactoryprogress”andproceduresforverifyingsatisfactoryprogressmayvaryamongdepartmentsandprograms.Eachdepartment/programshouldhaveawrittendefinitiononfileintheGraduateSchool,andthispolicyshouldbecommunicatedtograduatestudentsduringthefirstsemester.Studentsshouldsendtheiradvisoranemailmessagewhentheyhaveupdatedthewebsiteandreviewedtheirinformation.

Thecontract/proposalspecifiestheresearchplantobepursuedbythestudent,includingthespecificknowledgeandskillstobeattainedaswellashowtheywillbeattainedandevaluated. Theproposal,whichindicateshowtheexperiencewillcontributetothestudent’scapacitytoperformindependentresearch,mustbemutuallyacceptabletothestudent,thefacultyadvisor,andtheResearchApplicationinstructor.

ApprovalsTheresearchproposalandthesignedandcompletedResearchApplication/SpecialTopicsApprovalForm(locatedonPhDProgramwebsiteunder“forms”)mustbesubmittedtotheDoctoralProgramDirectorpriortothebeginningofthesemesterduringwhichtheResearchApplicationcourseisbeingtakenorsubmittedassoonaspracticablebythestudent’sadvisor.
CourseRequirementsandEvaluation:
Ordinarily,thestudent’sinvolvementinResearchApplicationIwillculminateinascholarlyproductofpublishablequality,co‐authoredbythestudentandthefacultyresearchinstructor(mentor).Atminimum,thestudentisexpectedtosubmitaformalwrittensummary(theformatofwhichmustbeapprovedbytheinstructor),whichintegratesthesubstantive,methodological,and/orstatisticalcomponentsoftheresearchproject. Theresearchinstructorevaluatesthestudent’sperformancebaseduponthecompletionofthetasksspecifiedintheoriginalcontract/proposal,includingtheattainmentofthetargetedknowledgeandskills,andtheoverallqualityofthefinalwrittenreport. Thiswrittenproductmustbeevaluatedassatisfactorybytheresearchinstructorbeforethecourseissuccessfullycompleted. AllResearchApplicationcoursesaregradedonalettergrade(A,B,CorF)basis.

ComprehensiveExaminationProcessUponsubstantialcompletionofrequiredcourseworkasoutlinedinthedoctoralstudyplan(D2form)studentswillberequiredtocompleteacomprehensiveexamination.Thecomprehensiveexaminationwillcontaintwoparts,aprovisionofawrittendissertationproposalandanoralpresentationanddiscussionoftheproposal.Thepurposeofthecomprehensiveexaminationprocessistoassurethatstudentshavetherequiredknowledgeandskilltocompletetheirdoctoraldissertation.Oral: Theoralexaminvolvespresentationoftheproposaltothestudent’sdoctoralcommittee.Written: Thewrittenportionoftheexamwillinvolveapprovalofthedissertationproposal.Theproposalshouldreflectthefirstthreedissertationchapters.Chapterone:INTRODUCTIONshouldincludeanIntroductiontothedissertation,itsquestionsandhypothesis.Chaptertwo:LITERATUREshouldfocusonthereviewofcurrentliterature,andChapterthree:METHODSshouldclearlyoutlinethemethodstobeusedinthedissertationproject.Thewrittenproposalshouldbegiventothestudent’sdoctoralcommitteeandtheoralexamscheduledassoonaspossiblewithinaminimumof30daysandamaximumof60days.Thecommitteewillprovidefeedbackontheproposalandapproveafinalproduct.UponsuccessfulcompletionofthecomprehensiveexaminationthechairandcommitteememberswillsigntheD3form.Thestudent’schairpersonwillforwardthecompletedD3tothedoctoralprogramdirectorforsignatureandforwardingtotheOfficeofGraduateStudies.DoctoralCandidacyandContinuousEnrollmentCandidacyforadoctoraldegreeisestablishedbypassingthecomprehensiveexamination.Statusasacontinuousenrollmentdoctoralstudentbeginsthetermaftertheterminwhichthecomprehensiveexamwassuccessfullycompleted.CandidacyismaintainedbyenrollinginSW9900Dissertationfortwosemesterhourseachfallandwintersemesterandforonesemesterhoureachsummersessionuptoandincludingtheterminwhichthedissertationisdefended.Continuousenrollmentprovidesaccesstoanadvisor’ssupport,doctoralprogramcommitteeguidanceandUniversityresearchfacilitiesforcompletionofthedissertation.FailuretocontinuouslyenrollinSW9900Dissertationuntilthedoctoraldegreeisawardedterminatescandidacy.

IX. THEDISSERTATION
DissertationandDissertationDefenseThedissertationmustbewrittenonasubjectapprovedbythecandidate’sdissertationcommittee,mustembodytheresultsoforiginalandsignificantinvestigation,andmustbethecandidate’sownwork.Everycandidateshouldobtain“GuidelinesforPreparingThesesandDissertations”fromtheOfficeofGraduateStudies.TheSchoolofSocialWorkrequiresalldissertationscomplywithAPAstyleandreferenceformat.AlldissertationdefensesshallbeopentotheMUgeneralfaculty.TheSchoolofSocialWorkwillannouncedissertationdefensedatestotheentirefaculty.Thecandidatemustbeenrolledtodefendthedissertation,whichcanonlybedefendedwhenMUisofficiallyinsession.Areportoftheexamination,carryingthesignaturesofallmembersofthecommittee,issenttotheOfficeofGraduateStudiesbeforethedeadlineprecedingtheanticipateddateofgraduation.Forthedissertationtobesuccessfullydefended,thestudent’sdoctoralcommitteemustvotetopassthestudentonthedefensewithnomorethanonedissentingorabstainingvote.ThefinalcopyofthedissertationmustbesubmittedtotheOfficeofGraduateStudiesinelectronicformataccordingtothe“GuidelinesforPreparingThesesandDissertations.”DissertationCommitteeThepurposeoftheDissertationCommitteeistoprovidescientific/expertoversightinthedevelopmentofthedoctoralstudent’sdissertationandtoprovidementorshiptothestudentintheprocessofcompletingthedissertation.ResearchRelatedTopics ProtectionofHumanSubjects

Theprogressofeachgraduatestudentwillbeevaluatedannuallybythestudent’sadvisorand/ordirectorofgraduatestudies.Thedefinitionof“satisfactoryprogress”andpoliciesforverifyingsatisfactoryprogressisbeingmadevaryamongdepartments/programs,buteachdepartment/programshouldhaveawrittendefinitiononfileintheOfficeofGraduateStudies.Thispolicyshouldbecommunicatedtograduatestudentsduringtheirfirstsemester.Whenthereisaquestionastowhetherornotsatisfactoryprogressisbeingmade,thedoctoralprogramdirectorinthedepartment/programand/orfacultyadvisorwillwritetothestudentandrecommendaface‐to‐facemeetingbetweenthestudentandthefacultyadvisor.TheOfficeofGraduateStudieswillbeinformedofallstudentswhoarenotmakingsatisfactoryprogress.Ifthereisdisagreement,thefacultyadvisorwillaskthestudenttosubmitaseparatelettertothedirectorofgraduatestudies.Copiesofbothletterswillbemadeavailabletothestudent,maintainedinadepartment/programfile,andforwardedtotheOfficeofGraduateStudies.Ifdifficultiespersistandthefacultyadvisoranddirectorofgraduatestudiesagreethatprobationisappropriate,thestudentwillbenotifiedinwritingoftheprobationaryperiod,whichmayvaryamongdepartments/programsfrom30daystoafullsemester.Theprobationletterwillstateexplicitlythatthestudentisondepartment/programprobationandstatepreciselywhatmustbeaccomplishedandbywhatdateinorderforthestudenttoreturntogoodstandinginthedepartment/programandberemovedfromprobation.Ifthestudentdoesnotcomplywiththeconditionsofprobation,aletter(signedbythedirectorofthedoctoralprogram)willbesenttothestudentwithnotificationofdismissalfromthedegreeprogram.Thisletterwillinformthestudentoftherighttoappeal,first,tothedepartment/program,andsecond,totheGraduateFacultySenate.Acopyofthedepartment/program’slettermustbesenttotheAssociateViceChancellorforGraduateStudiesatthesametimeitissenttothestudent.

MU’sOfficeofGraduateStudiesenrollsover7,000graduatestudentsinalargenumberofgraduatedegreeprograms.Initshistory,theschoolhasgrantedatotalofmorethan70,000graduatedegrees.ItisamemberoftheAssociationofOfficeofGraduateStudiesandtheCouncilofOfficeofGraduateStudies.GraduateprogramsaredesignedbyMU’sgraduatefacultytomeetsocietalneedsandthecareerandintellectualobjectivesoftheindividualgraduatestudent.Theclassicstudent‐mentorrelationshipisthekeystoneofgraduateeducationatMU.TheOfficeofGraduateStudiesseekstoassurethepeopleofMissourithatfacultyandstudentresearchaddssignificantlytothesupplyofknowledge.Theschoolalsoseekstoassureitssupportersthatnewknowledgeandskillsaretransmitted,thattraditionsarechallengedandsustained,andthatcreativeactivitiesandachievementsarerecognizedandsupported.ThroughtheUniversity’sOfficeofResearch,qualityresearchandcreativeactivitiesprovidevarioussupportservicesforresearchersandadministratorsthroughexternallyfundedresearchgrantsandcontractsawardedtoMUpersonnel.Graduateeducationisdesignedtofacilitatethedevelopmentofeffectiveteachers,creativeresearchers,andengagedcitizens.Thekeystosuccessincludethestudent‐mentorrelationshipandanintellectualclimateconductivetotheacquisitionofresearch,teaching,andserviceskills.Closeinteractionwiththefacultyallowsthestudenttodevelopscholarlyinsight.AtMUthestudent‐mentorrelationshipismorethanasimpleapprenticeship.Itisanintellectualpartnershiprewardingbothparties.Theschoolencouragesstudentparticipationinacademicaffairs.StudentscontributetoOfficeofGraduateStudiesgovernance,andperhapsmoreimportantly,helpopenlinesofcommunicationamongstudents,facultyandadministrators.ThiseffortresultsinavigorousGraduateStudentAssociation,whichplacesmembersonmostOfficeofGraduateStudiesandGraduateFacultySenatecommittees.TheUniversityprovidesaneffectiveenvironmentforresearch.Inordertomaintainitsteachingprograms,theUniversityprovidesfaculty,staff,laboratories,libraries,computersandotherspecialfacilities.Theseresourcesalsoarenecessaryforthesystematicinvestigation,experimentationandcreativeactivityinvolvedinresearch.Thus,the

GeneralResponsibilitiesAssociatedWithGraduateAssistantshipsThepurposeofagraduateassistantshipistoprovideaprofessionaldevelopmentopportunityconsistentwithastudent’seducationalobjectivesandtoprovidefinancialsupportforagraduatestudentwithinthecontextofdepartmentorgrant‐relatedtaskstobeperformedforasetperiodoftimeduringwhichthestudentisexpectedtopursueacademicand/orprofessionalactivitiestowardstheadvanceddegree.Toholdagraduateassistantship,astudentmustbeadmittedtoadepartmentorareawithaspecificgraduatedegreeobjectiveandmustbeenrolledandbemakingsatisfactoryprogress(3.0GPA)towarddegreeattainmentduringtheperiodoftheassistantship.
Eachdepartmentorunitshallestablishitsowndocumentedproceduresforrecruitment,selection,retention,anddismissalofgraduateassistantsinaccordancewithMUgraduatepolicyandAffirmativeAction/EqualOpportunityguidelines.
Whenthegraduateassistantishired,proceduresandpoliciesrelativetothepositionshallbemadeavailabletoeachgraduatestudentthroughthedepartment.

TheUniversityofMissouri‐ColumbiaisasignatorytotheCouncilofOfficeofGraduateStudiespolicyregardingtheofferingandacceptanceoffinancialaid.Specifically,studentsareundernoobligationtorespondtooffersoffinancialsupportforthecomingacademicyearpriortoApril15th.Whenastudentacceptsanofferbeforethisdate,andsubsequentlydesirestowithdrawthatacceptance,thestudentmaysubmitinwritingaresignationoftheappointmentatanytime.However,anacceptancegivenorleftinforceafterApril15thcommitsthestudentnottoacceptanotherofferwithoutfirstobtainingawrittenreleasefromtheinstitutiontowhichacommitmenthasbeenmade.Dutiesofthegraduateassistantareassignedbythedepartmentalchair/head,graduatecommitteechair,administrativesupervisor,orothers.

Graduateassistantsareexpectedtobeassignedrelevantprofessionalandacademicexperiencesthatmayinclude,amongothertasks,teachingorassistinginacourse(underthesupervisionofadirectorormentor),gradingforacourse,assistinginadepartment‐sponsoredlaboratoryorinstructionalcenter,assistingaprofessoronaresearchproject,professionalconferencedevelopment,tutoring,ordevelopmentofadministrativeskills.

Studentsareresponsibletoensuretimelymeetingswiththeacademicadvisor,dissertationchair,anddissertationcommitteeandindividualcommitteememberswhichensurecontinuousprogresstowardthedegree.
StudentsmustensuremaintenanceofcontinuousregistrationintheUniversityandfailuretoregisterinagivensemesterwillconstitutegroundsfordismissalfromtheprogramexceptwhereaformalLeaveofAbsencehasbeengrantedorextenuatingcircumstancesbeyondthecontrolofthestudentarepresentedtothedoctoralprogramcommitteeandacademicadvisor/dissertationchair.

Studentswhofailtodevelopaplanofactionaddressingthefailuretoprogressorwhofailtomeettherequirementsofanegotiatedplanofactionaddressingidentifiedfailurestoprogresstowardthedegreewillbesubjecttodismissalfromtheprogram
StudentswhoareplacedonProbationaryStatusbytheOfficeofGraduateStudiesmustreturntheiracademicstatustosatisfactory[GPA3.0orabove]duringtheprobationaryperiod.FailuretoreturntheGPAto3.0willconstitutegroundsfordismissalfromtheprogram.
StudentsareexpectedtoconductthemselvesresponsiblyandinamannerconsistentwiththerequirementsoftheCodeofEthicsoftheprofessionofSocialWork.Failuretodosomayconstitutegroundsfordismissalfromtheprogram.
Studentsareexpectedtobewillingtoaddressstressorsrelatedtothefailuretoprogressintheacademicprogramwhichdonotarisedirectlyfromthatprogramviacommunicationwiththechair/advisorand/ortheDoctoralProgramDirector.
DOCTORALCHAIR/ACADEMICADVISORRESPONSIBILITIESTheseresponsibilitiesarecarriedbytheoriginalacademicadvisorassignedtoanincomingfirst‐yeardoctoralstudentuntilthatstudentselectsadissertationchairandthatfacultymemberagreestobecomethedissertationchair.Theresponsibilitieshereinthenshiftimmediatelytothefacultymemberservingaschairofthedissertationcommittee.
Chairs/advisorsareresponsiblefortheongoingmonitoringoftheirstudents’progresstowarddegreecompletionandforaddressingfailurestomakesuchprogress. Actionsaddressingfailuretoprogressinclude,ataminimum:
