MISProgramProgramOverviewWe are living in a knowledge society, where finding information – especially the rightinformation – is becoming increasingly vital across the social, political, economic, cultural,educationalandadministrativearenas.Encompassingthecollection,organization,storageandretrievalofinformationinallitsvariedforms,informationstudiesisundergoingunprecedentedgrowthandrapidchangeasoursocietyembracesandadaptstothedigitalinformationage.
Information touches all disciplines, and our students arrive with an extensive range ofexperiencefromawidevarietyofbackgrounds, includingbiology,communications,computerscience, education, engineering, geography, history, law, literature, music, political science,psychologyand sociology.Upongraduation, theyareprepared to takeonadiverse rangeofstimulatingcareersascontrolledvocabularyspecialists,digitalcurators,emergingtechnologieslibrarians,informationarchitects,knowledgemanagementanalysts,librarydirectors,metadatamanagers,privacyanalysts,recordsmanagersandwebcontentmanagers,tonamejustafew.

UniversityofOttawa(suchaslaw,translation,managementandcommunication);• flexible studyoptions, including course-based, CO-OPor thesis options, allow students to
tailortheirprogramofstudytomeettheirprofessionalandresearch-basedinterests;• close proximity to major Canadian information institutions, such as Library and Archives
Canada, the LibraryofParliament,CanadaNational Science Library (NRC), thearchivesofthe national museums and galleries, two major public library systems (Ottawa andGatineau), three university libraries (uOttawa, Carleton and Université du Québec enOutaouais), and a wide range of information-based centres in government departments,NGOs and private institutions, among others, offer a variety of experiences andopportunitiesforstudents;
• full-andpart-timeprogramsconsistentlyattractmaturestudentswishing toexpand theircareer options; moreover, full-time students can complete their graduate studies in twoyears, while part-time students can pace themselves and keep their current jobs whilelayingthegroundworkforanewcareer.
ProgramOptionsÉSIS, locatedwithin the Faculty of Arts, offers a graduate program leading to the degree ofMasterofInformationStudies(MIS).ÉSISstudentscompletesevencompulsorycoursesintheir

firstyearofstudyplusacapstoneexperiencecourseintheirfinalsemester.Remainingcreditsare fulfilled by take elective courses, whichmay be combinedwith a thesis or CO-OPworkplacement. Students have three options to complete the 48 credits required for the MISdegree.Rememberthatinallcases,aminimumof25%ofcoursesmustbecompletedinone’ssecondlanguage.

Course-basedOption
Students complete a total of 16 three-credit courses.Most full-time students complete fourcoursespersemesterovertwoacademicyears,whilepart-timestudentstypicallyfollowoneortwocoursespersemesteroveralongerperiod.Pleasenotethatthereisasignificantlyreducedcourseofferinginthesummersemester.
ThesisOption
Students complete 12 three-credit courses, followed by a thesis. One semester prior tobeginningthethesis,studentsmustregistertheirtopicandsupervisorandsubmitaproposal.Students will seek out their own supervisor, and they are encouraged to consult with anyfacultymember for guidance.Depending on the topic, studentsmayhaveone supervisor ormultipleco-supervisors.Westronglyencouragestudentswhohavean interest in research topursuethisoption,andwewouldbedelightedtodiscussresearchpossibilitiesandstrategieswithyou.StudentswhointendtopursuethethesisoptionmustsuccessfullycompleteISI6361Advancedresearchmethodsininformationstudies/ISI6761Méthodesavancéesderechercheensciencesdel’information.
CO-OPOption
The CO-OP option and eight-month paid work placement are available to full-time studentsonly. In addition, this program is competitive: there are a limited number of CO-OP workplacementsspotsavailabletoÉSISstudentseachyear.
TheCO-OPprogramisadministeredbytheUniversityofOttawaCO-OPOffice.TheapplicationprocessrequiresstudentstoapplyinlateSeptemberoftheirfirstyearofstudy.Becauseofthisearly timeline, admission is based on a student’s uOttawa admission average to the MISprogram. In addition, studentsmustmaintain aB average throughout their first semester ofstudies.

Interested students should visit the uOttawa Cooperative Education Programs department(https://coop.uottawa.ca/en/coop-students) for more details about important deadlines andhow to apply. As a general guide, applications for CO-OP are accepted online through theCooperativeEducationProgramsdepartmentbySeptember30thofastudent’sfirstsemesterof study. The coop department also holds information sessions in October, and studentsreceivenewsoftheiracceptance intotheprogrambyDecemberoftheirfirstyearofstudies.InterviewsareheldJanuaryandFebruaryoftheirfirstyear,andCO-OPworkplacementsalwaystake place between May to December following a student’s first full year of study. Workplacements may be either one eight-month placement, or two consecutive four-monthplacements.ThereareadditionalfeesassociatedwithenrolmentintheCO-OPprogram.Pleaseconsultthetableonpage15ofthishandbookformoreinformation.
