PhilosophyoftheBSNprogramoftheDepartmentofNursingCollegeofHealthProfessionsTheUniversityofFindlayThecurriculumoftheBachelorofScienceinNursingdegreeincorporateslearningfromtheprinciplesofgeneraleducationincludingtheliberalartsandsupportingsciences,aswellasprofessionalnursingconcepts.Thenursinggraduatewillbejoiningascholarly,altruisticprofessionandbepreparedtocollaboratewiththepatient,membersofthehealthcareteam,andthehealthcareorganizationtopromotetheoptimalhealthofallpersons.Individuals,families,communitiesandpopulationsareuniqueanddeservingofrespectandautonomy,includingtherighttodiewithdignity.Individualsareanintegrationofthesixdomainsofthehumanexperiences,whichincludesphysical,emotional,intellectual,environmental,socio-culturalandspiritualcomponentsofthehumanbeing.Allhavetherighttoanoptimallevelofhealth.Nursingcanfacilitatethisprocessbyinteractingwithintheinternalandexternalenvironmentwhichaffectsthebehavior,well-beinganddevelopmentoftheindividual,family,communitiesandpopulation.Theinternalenvironmentconsistsofallinfluenceswithintheperson,includingphysiological,psychological,social,spiritualandculturalfactors.Theexternalenvironmentismadeupofallinfluencesoutsideoftheperson,includingstructural,aesthetic,ecological,technological,political,legalandeconomicvariables.Nursesassistthepatienttoadapttotheenvironmenttopromote,maintain,orrestorehealth.Healthisastateofwell-beingthatisculturallydefinedandvaluedwhilebeingpracticedonadailybasis.Individuals,families,communitiesandpopulationsareonahealthcontinuumwithvaryinglevelsofwell-beingrangingfromoptimalhealthtodeath.Thenurse,inavarietyofroles,recognizestheperson'sdefinitionofhealthandcollaborateswiththe

personforadignifiedlifethroughhealthpromotion,diseaseprevention,illnesscare,healthrestoration,healthmaintenance,orapeacefuldeath.Buildingontheliberalarts,supportingsciences,andtheoriesandpracticesoftheprofession,nursingisascholarlydisciplinethathasitsowndistinctbodyofknowledge.Guidedbyaltruisticvaluesandspiritualprinciples,nursesusethenursingprocesstoaddresstheneedsofitsclients.Nursingpracticeisguidedbyevidencebasedstandards,creativeandcriticalthinkingapproachestoachievepositivehealthoutcomes.Thescienceandtheartofnursingisenhancedandmaintainedthroughacommitmenttolife-longlearning.Nursingeducationoccursinanenvironmentoftrust,mutualrespectandrecognitionoftheuniquenessofeachlearner.Throughtheuseofawidevarietyofteachingmodalities,thestudentachievesthelearningoutcomesoutlinedfortheprogram.Learnersassumeresponsibilityfortheirownlearningbyidentifyingtheirindividuallearninggoalsandevaluatingtheirprogresstowardthesetargets.Facultymembersarefacilitatorsintheprocessbymentoring,guiding,andeducatingstudentstowardsalifeofservice.Usingapproacheswhichenhancethestudents’abilitiesinthecognitive,psychomotorandaffectivedomainspreparethelearnerforasuccessfulprofessionalcareerinthenursingprofession.ConceptualFrameworkoftheBSNprogramoftheDepartmentofNursingCollegeofHealthProfessionsTheUniversityofFindlayStudentdevelopmentandexpertiseinthenursingprofessionbeginsduringthesecondsemesterofthesophomoreyearasthestudentassumestheroleofnoviceinthepracticeofthediscipline.Whileinclinicalexperiences,thestudentintegratestheprinciplesofgeneraleducation,naturalscienceandprofessionalnursingconceptstoenhancethecareofindividuals,families,communitiesorpopulations.Thenurseandpatientinteractionisinfluencedbylegal-ethicalprinciples,culturalvalues,andspiritualbeliefsastheycarryouttheroleofproviderofcare,designer/manager/coordinatorofcareormemberofthenursingprofession.Itisassumedgraduateswillpracticefromaholisticframeworkusingacaring,evidence-basedapproachtopractice.Asthestudentprogressesintheireducation,thequalityoftheircareandthescopeoftheirskillswillbroadenwithincreasingaccountabilityfortheiractions.Additionalinteractionswilloccurwithstudentscaringforpatientsacrossthehealth-illnesscontinuumandindifferingstagesoflifespandevelopment.Culturalvariationsandvaluedifferenceswillbeincorporatedintotheplanofcare.Inpreparingforgraduation,studentswillrecognizetheneedtocareforthemselvessotheyareabletocareforothers.Further,theyadoptaphilosophyofcontinuousprofessionaldevelopmentandbecomepreparedtoengageinscholarlyactivities.Accountabilityfortheirownnursingcareaswellasthecarethatisdelegatedisassumed.Thestudentbeginsthetransitiontoacompetentpractitionerintheprofessionofnursing.
DefinitionofTermsAdaptation-methodofchangeinstructure,function,formorbehaviortocreatebalancebetweenpersonandenvironment.Client-anindividual,family,group,communityorpopulationthatseekstheadviceorservicesofahealthcareprofessionalqualifiedtoprovideservice.(Patientmaybeusedinterchangeablyforthetermclient)Community-acollectionofpeopleinacommonlocationwithdiverseculturesandbeliefsthatareinterdependent,sharingsomeattributesintheirlivesandmeetsawidevarietyofneeds.Externalenvironment-clientsareinaconstantexchangeofmatter,energy(local,regional,andglobal)inordertoattainbalance.Influencesontheenvironmentincludecultural,social,biophysical,politicalandeconomic.

Providerofcare-Thenurseemploysclinicaljudgmentsbaseduponsystematicnursingassessmentanddevelopmentofaplanofcare,whichincludeshealthcounselingandhealthteachingtoenhanceoptimalhealth.Theproviderofcarecommunicatesplanofcarewiththepatient/clientandmembersofthehealthcareteam.Qualityoflife-asdefinedbytheindividual,asenseofpeace,tranquilityandsatisfactionwithcurrentstateofbalancebetweenpersonandenvironment.Research-asystematicprocessofinquiry,datacollectionorexperimentationaimedatthediscoveryandinterpretationoffacts,theoriesandpracticalapplicationstoenhanceexistingknowledgeandgeneratenewknowledge.Restore-Interventionsandbehaviorsthatreturnstheindividualtoformerlevelofhealth.
PROGRAMREQUIREMENTS
TheUniversityofFindlaybelievesthatcertainfunctionalabilitiesandperformancestandardsarenecessaryforthesafepracticeofprofessionalnursing.Theseinclude:
• “Astudentshallnothaveimpairmentoftheabilitytopracticeaccordingtoacceptableandprevailingstandardsofsafenursingcarebecauseofphysicalormentaldisability”(ORCRule4723-5-12(16)
• theabilitytosee,hear,touch,smellanddistinguishcolors;• theabilitytospeakandwritewithaccuracy,clarity,andefficiency;• manualdexterity(grossandfinemovements);• theabilitytolearn,thinkcritically,analyze,assess,solveproblems,andreachjudgments,and;• emotionalstabilityandtheabilitytoacceptresponsibilityandaccountability.
NOTICETOPROSPECTIVEORCURRENTNURSINGSTUDENTSYouareatriskifyouhavebeenconvictedofapriorfelonyand/ormisdemeanors.Youmaynotbeabletoparticipateinclinicaleducationexperiencesinacutecaresystemsorotherclinicalsites;thereforepreventingyoufromcompletingtheprogram.Acriminalrecordmayalsopreventyoufromtakingthelicensingexam(NCLEX)andobtainingalicensetopracticeprofessionalnursing.Theapplicationforlicensure(NCLEX)willaskyouifwithinthelastfiveyears,haveyoubeendiagnosedwithorhaveyoubeentreatedorhospitalizedforbipolardisorder,schizophrenia,paranoia,oranyotherpsychoticdisorder?Havingapsychiatricillnessisnotaviolationofthenursinglaw.ThebasisforBoardactionwouldbeanillnessthatimpairsone’sabilitytopracticesafenursing.
ADMISSION,PROGRESSION,ANDGRADUATIONREQUIREMENTSADMISSIONTOTHENURSINGMAJORStudentAdmissionADMISSIONTOTHEUNIVERSITYStudentsinterestedinpursuingtheBachelorofScienceinNursingdegreemustfirstapplytotheUniversityandbeacceptedintotheUniversityasastudentwiththeadmissionstatusofDirectAdmissionintotheNursingProgram,regularadmittoUF,ortransferadmittoUF.Advancedplacementand/orcreditmaynotbeearnedthroughplacementexaminationtowardnursingcoursecredit(i.e.,designatedNURScourses).

DirectAdmissionintotheNursingProgram:StudentsmayapplytoTheUniversityofFindlayAdmissionsduringtheirsenioryearofhighschool.Highschoolseniorsmayreceivetheadmissionstatusof"directadmission"ifthefollowingcriteriaaremet:
1. ObtainaminimumcumulativeGPAof3.4inhighschool;2. Completeaminimumof3yearsofhighschoolmath,includingalgebra;3. Completeaminimumof3yearsofhighschoolscience,includingbiologyandchemistry;4. ObtainaminimumACTcompositescoreof23oracomparableSAT.5. Completionof:ApplicationforAdmission:DirectFreshmanAdmission
RegularAdmittotheUF:EntranceintoTheUniversityofFindlayrequiresanearneddiplomafromanaccreditedhighschoolinacollegepreparatorycourseofstudyoraGEDcertificate.ThefacultyrecommendsfourunitsofEnglish,threeunitsofmathematics,threeunitsofsocialstudies(includingoneinhistory),twounitsofscience,andtwounitsofforeignlanguage.Thefollowingcriteriaareusedasstandardsforfreshmanadmission:
• Highschoolgradesandclassrank;• AmericanCollegeTest(ACT)orScholasticAptitudeTest(SAT)scores;• AcademicLetterofRecommendation;• Otherindicatorsofacademicandpersonalsuccess(character,studyhabits,personality,etc.);• InternationalstudentsenteringTheUniversityofFindlay’sundergraduateprogrammustsubmitaTOEFLscoreofat
least500.InternationalstudentswhosemediumofinstructionwasinEnglishatthesecondaryand/orpost-secondarylevelsmayapplyforexemptionfromthisrequirement.
TransferAdmittotheUF:2017UFCatalogp.99Allfollowingcriteriaareconsideredasstandardsfortransferadmission:
• Completedadmissionapplication.• Atleasta2.0minimumcumulativegradepointaveragefromallpreviouspost-secondarygradesincourseswhich
arenotconsidereddevelopmentalinnature.AstudentunderacademicsuspensionordismissalfromanotherinstitutionwillnotbeadmittedtoTheUniversityofFindlayuntileligibletoreturntotheformerinstitution.
• Goodfinancialstandingatmostrecentlyattendedpost-secondaryinstitution.Goodfinancialstandinggenerallyimpliesthatthestudenthasnooutstandingbalanceathis/herpreviouspost-secondaryinstitution.
• Goodsocialstandingatmostrecentlyattendedpost-secondaryinstitution.Goodsocialstandinggenerallyimpliesthatthestudenthasnotbeensuspendedordismissedfromhis/herpreviouspost-secondaryinstitutionduetoanon-academicdisciplinaryaction.
• Otherindicatorsofacademic,personal,and/orprofessionalsuccess(highschoolgrades,classrank,etc.).• Transferstudentsmayberequiredtosubmitcoursesyllabiordescriptionsforevaluationbeforepreviouslyearned
creditsareconsideredfortransfer.CourseswillbeevaluatedbytheUniversity’sOfficeoftheRegistrar.Aminimumgradeof“C”(“C-”isnotacceptable)mustbeearnedinordertoreceivecreditfortransfercourses.
• Studentsapplyingtothepre-licensureprogramofnursingmaynottransfercoursesfromotherinstitutionstomeettherequirementsofnursingcourses.
UponadmissiontotheUniversity,studentsmaydeclarethemajorofnursingandschedulecoursestocompletethenursingprerequisites.AfteradmissiontoandenrollmentintheUniversity,studentswillneedtobeformallyadmittedtotheDepartmentofNursing(NursingMajor)totakethefirstclinicalnursingcoursewhichisscheduledforthespringsemesterofthesecondyearofthenursingcurriculum.Allstudents(includingtransferstudents)willbeconsideredforadmissionintothenursingmajorbytheDepartmentofNursingonacompetitivebasis.

ThenursingprogramatTheUniversityofFindlayisatraditionalBachelorofScienceinNursing,four-yeardegreeprogram.Itisnotanacceleratedprogram.GraduatesareeligibletotaketheNCLEX-RNexam.AdvancedPlacementAdvancedPlacementintosupportcoursesorcomponentsoftheGeneralEducationCurriculumwillfollowUniversitypolicy.TransferstudentsmayseekcreditforgeneraleducationorsupportcoursesbyfollowingthepoliciesgoverningtransferofcreditwhicharefoundinTheUniversityofFindlay’sUndergraduateCatalog.2017UFUndergraduateCatalog(p.12)AdvancedPlacementExaminationsoftheCollegeEntranceExaminationBoardarenotrequiredforadmission,butitispossibletoreceiveadvancedstandingand/orcollegecreditbysubmittingtheresultsoftheAdvancedPlacementExamination.Creditand/orwaivermaybegivenforgradesofthreeorbetteruponevaluationbytheappropriatecollegedean.ReviewofMilitaryEducationandSkillsTrainingPolicyIfanapplicanthasexperienceinthearmedforcesoftheUnitedStates,orintheNationalGuardorinareservecomponent:1.Theapplicantmustmeetallthecriteriaintheadmissionspolicy.2.TheChairoftheDONandtheofficeoftheDeanoftheCollegeofHealthProfessionswillreviewtheapplicant’smilitaryeducationandskillstrainingfromthesubmittedofficialJointServicesTranscript.3.TheapplicantwillprovidecoursematerialorobjectivesasrequiredbythechairandtheofficeoftheDeanoftheCollegeofHealthProfessionsthataretobeconsideredforreviewand/oradvancedcredit.4.CreditwillbeawardedinareasthataresubstantiallyequivalentmilitaryeducationorskillstrainingthatmatchtheprogramcurriculumandfollowthenursingprogramandtheUniversity’spolicies.CRITERIAFORADMISSIONTOTHENURSINGMAJORAdmissiontotheDepartmentofNursingiscompetitivewithprioritygiventostudentsadmittedtoFindlaywiththestatusof“DirectAdmission.”Inaddition,TheUniversityofFindlaystudentsaregivenpriorityovertransferstudents.StudentswhomeetthefollowingcriteriawillbeconsideredforadmissiontotheDepartmentofNursing(DON)inthespringsemesterofthesecondyearofthenursingcurriculum:

CLINICALEXPERIENCESStudentIncidentorInjuryProvidingnursingcaretotheclientwithaninfectiousdiseasetodayremainsoneofthegreatestchallengesandconcernsofthenursingprofession.Thesediseasespresentlyinclude,butarenotlimitedto,humanimmunodeficiencyvirus(HIV),hepatitisB(HVB),methicillinresistantStaphylococcusaureusandtuberculosis(TB).TheDepartmentofNursingsharesintheconcernforthesafetyofthestudentandpatient.Nursingfacultymemberswillassistthestudentincaringforthephysicalandpsychosocialneedsofthepatient,regardlessofsex,religion,age,ethnicbackground,financialsituation,andphysical/emotionalcondition.Thestudentisencouragedatanytimetoaddressquestionsandconcernswiththenursingfacultywhencaringforanyclient,includingcareforthepatientwithapossibleinfectiousdisease.TheDepartmentofNursinggivesyearlyinstructiontoeachstudentinstandardprecautionsaccordingtorecommendationsfromtheCentersforDiseaseControl.Inadditionstudentsaremadeawareduringorientationtotheclinicalenvironmenttofollowstandardprecautionswhencaringforothers.Intheeventthatastudentshouldbeexposedtobodyfluids,potentiallyinfectiousmaterial,orbeinvolvedinotherincidentsduringaclinicalsession,thestudentshouldfollowthemostcurrentprotocolrecommendedbytheagencyinwhichtheincidentoccurs.Allincidentsorinjuriesmustbereportedtotheclinicalinstructorimmediately.Theinstructorwillassistthestudentinidentifyingappropriatetreatmentandneedforreferral.Examplesofincidentsorinjurieswouldincludefalls,needlesticks,backstrain,andmotorvehicleaccidents.Studentsmayberequiredtoshowproofofhealthorcarinsurancecoverage.Anycostsincurredfromanincidentorinjurythatoccursduringclinicalexperiences,includingtesting,diagnosis,andtreatmentofanyinfectiousand/orcommunicablediseases,willbepaidbythestudentorhis/herinsurancecarrier.InclementWeather
