How to Make the Most Out Of Your University

    Education

Going to class is only one part of the university-learning environment. There are many resources outside of the

classroom that provide invaluable opportunities that can help you get ahead, lead to personal development

and help you both in your studies and your post-graduate life as well.

Here are a few resources that are available to students on most college campuses that you may not know of

or think about. Take advantage of these as they are there for you to use!

    Student council/student union

Most campuses have student organizations made up of elected representatives that speak for the students in

official university discussions and decision-making. Have some good suggestions for how to improve your

university or department? Run for a student council/union position and let your voice be heard!

Being an elected representat ive is also not bad for the CV/resume as it shows the leadership and organizational skills that

    employers are looking for.

    Student clubs and associations

Student clubs offer an outlet to meet like-minded people and incorporate your hobbies into your student life.

Whether you are interested in the environment and sustainability, politics and international affairs or exercising

and healthy living, you are likely to find a student club that suits your interests at your university.

Not convinced that there are clubs for truly every interest? Here are few examples of some of the most

    colorful student clubs

    i. Campus Peoples Watchers at the University of Minnesotalike the name suggests, they love to watch

    people that pass them by.

ii. Squirrel Club at the University of Michiganin between studying, relax by feeding the on-campus

    squirrels

iii. Free Compliments Club at Tufts Universitysee someone on campus with a cool backpack or nifty

notebook? Stop them and let them know! Nothing turns a day around or makes someone forget about that

less than stellar biology grade quite like an unexpected compliment.

    Professors office hours

Professors are there to help you learn.

They usually have regular office hours and times that they are available to meet to either help you in your

studies or just get to know you. Getting to know your professors may not only help you get better grades, but

can also come in handy for securing research opportunities or internships and letters of recommendations for

    future positions post-graduation.

    Volunteer organizations

Help those around you by joining volunteer associations at your university.

It can also be a way to merge your interests with helping others. Like to play soccer? Find a club that teaches

sports to children after school? Are you interested in cooking and all things culinary? Volunteer at a local

soup kitchen and put you skills to use by feeding the homeless in your community. Not only will you leave

feeling good, but also its a good way to forget about the stress of studying and school and focus instead on

those around you who can benefit from your time and skills.

Sign up as a teaching assistant

If you are in a class that is really interesting and you are inspired by the material and subject, approach your

professor and ask if you can be their assistant for next semesters class. This is a great way to better know

your professor (see tip 3!) and can also lead to some paid teaching opportunities. By teaching you often get

better acquainted with the subject, as imparting knowledge is a great way to truly learn what you know and

what knowledge gaps may need to be filled.

This is also great for the post-college CV/resume.

    Sports teams

Many college campuses offer some sort of sports team. This can be a formal team with tryouts and intermural

tournaments, or it can be a recreational team with fellow students that like to run around and relieve stress.

If you cant find a team that supports your sports preferences, gather fellow sports-enthusiasts and organize

    one!

    Your favorite spot in school

    Find your spot on campus.

This can be a place that you like to go to sit and people watch (great if you are at the University of

Minnesota, see tip 1!) and relax or a place that you know you can go to study in complete concentration.

Whatever function it serves, find that spot you know you can go to when you need it.

    The library

So many books to read and explore.

Certainly check out the books that are on your course literature list, but dont forget about the plethora ofother books that are right at your fingertips. College is the time to broaden your horizons and learn new

things. Are you a second year biochemistry student with a passion for baroque art? Mosey on over to the art

history section and give in to your interests.

Also, dont be afraid to utilize your librarian as they can help you navigate the thousands of books and can

recommend books that suit your interest.

    Academic and career advising centers

Academic and career advising centers are where you should be hanging out.

Learn from professionals who can give you expert advice on how to plan your academic schedule and point

you in the right direction. We dont always have all the answers or know which direction we should go, but

there are on-campus services available that can help make these tough decisions easier and outline the

    different alternatives and options.

Also, career services often arrange career nights and career fairs where students can meet and mingle with

local employers and get career advice such as how to structure your CV/resume and what to wear for your

    interview.

Upperclassmen: learn from the experience of others!

Talk to those that have been where you have been, maybe made the mistakes you are about to make.

They can help, and possibly avert crisis! Listen to those that have been there who can offer advice and

possibly give you guidance. Is there a class you are thinking about taking, but not quite sure it offers what you

are looking for? Ask someone who has already taken it and can give you information to help make an

    informed decision.

Do not be afraid of asking for help and seeking it from those around you. Their advice and words may be just

    what you need.
