Elizabeth Acevedo is an Afro- Dominican writer and poet. She has degrees in performing arts and creative writing, & is a National Poetry Slam champion. When she was younger, she would constantly come up with ideas for stories or songs. She says: 'I wanted to sing but didn’t have a great voice, so I turned to hip-hop. I wanted to rap - and then discovered poetry slams.' In The Poet X, 15 year old Xiomara works through family tension and conflict by writing poetry. In new novel With The Fire On High, the one place Emoni Santiago can let everything go is in the kitchen, where she adds a little something magical to everything she cooks, turning food into straight-up goodness.
