VP for Student Affairs:MR. RICHARD HESTER
We have survived our first month of quarantine/shelter in place, Zoom meetings, conference calls, remote work, and partial office staffing. I am thankful for the way everyone has worked to make sure our vital communication flows and processes have gone on with little to no interruption. I have no doubt that many of you will come through this more tech savvy than you were before the world took a collective pause and hopefully a restart will be on the horizon. This is a challenging time for the students we work with on campus, on-line, and in the recruitment process. These challenges also spread to their parents and from office to office. Thank you all for working to stay positive. We will continue to plan for our campus to be ready for our new and returning students this fall. Call on me if your area has any additional needs and we will get through this. Stay healthy and we can all look forward to better days that will come.
Sincerely,

STUDENT LIFEMR. BYRON THETFORD
UWA SGA President Christopher Dunn has joined with SGA presidents from all of Alabama's
public universities and the Alabama Higher Education Partnership to answer the call from Ala-
bama Governor Kay Ivey to help and encourage citizens who are able to donate blood to do so in
an effort to address the shortage following a significant decrease in donations. Dunn and other
SGA presidents filmed remotely for a video promoting the campaign.
Those who are willing can schedule appointments with American Red Cross of Alabama. Read the
story to learn more about the need and safety measures taken. Kudos to our student leaders for
their commitment to service! #DoSomethingThatMatters

Special thanks to UWA Public Relations
Quotes from Quaratine: A student’s perspectiveMy experience during quarantine has been a time of self-reflection! I have spent most of my time with my closest family and friends. I have been working on myself by studying more, working out, and developing closer relationships with the people who mean the most to me! Online class-es can be a bit hard, especially if you are not used to them, but my professors have been very easy-going and understanding. Big thanks to the administration of UWA for being the absolute best and doing everything y’all can for the students. I hope everybody has had a positive quar-antine. Can’t wait to be back in the fall. - Madison McMinn, Sophomore Physical Education Major
My experience during COVID-19 thus far has been full of new and challenging experiences. I decided to stay in Livingston for quarantine because I consider Livingston to be my home now. I have spent most of my time working on schoolwork and enjoying time with a small group of friends. I have been able to self-reflect a lot especially on the things that I have taken for granted for so many years. I have been so blessed in my life to have the essential comforts of going to the store and getting my haircut, going to the movies, and to church all things that have been taken away due to COVID-19. I have been able to entertain myself though fellowship with friends, online worship, and so many shows and movies on Netflix. I am currently in junior block in the College of Education and have definitely struggled with the transition to online schooling, but we have made it work. Shout out to the administration at The University of West Alabama for all your hard work and dedication to the students during this time. We are all going to make it through this together because we are UWA strong. - Christopher Dunn, Junior Elementary Edu-cation
Hi, I am Anthony Abner and as a graduating senior, COVID-19 have given me the free time to really sit around and think about the future of my life post-graduation. I am pretty sure I have considered at least seven different pathways such as joining the military, working up the corpo-rate chain of Office Depot (one of my favorite stores to go to), and becoming an interior designer (due to my obsession with changing my room multiple times and thinking I actually know what I am doing). Boredom has given me so much time to just ponder over why I chose to go down one path in my life and not the others. Throughout all my time in quarantine, it has given me a great prospective on those who strongly influence my life and my actions. Getting much more time to spend time with my grandmother has shown me she is the reason I have yet to succumb to my laziness. Having my normal monthly routines be interrupted and stalled has helped me better prioritize my what I want out of life so I am counting down the days until I get the chance to really be an adult in the real world. - Anthony Abner, Graduating Senior Biology

• Hoover Selection took place on April 21, with 24 groups of four (total of 96 residents) selecting apartments in Hoover. This selection was only for those residents who fully matched as groups of four in My College Roomie.
• Priority Room Selection took place on April 22 for students that had fully matched with a roommate (or two) by April 13. There were 56 pairs and one group of three participate, for a total of 115 residents.
• Regular Room Selection for any other students that had not yet selected a room took place April 28 – 30.
• Sorority Room Selection will take place in a few weeks.
• US Census
• April 30 - Data for 699 residents living on campus on April 1 was up-loaded to the US Census bureau
• COVID-19 Response
• Selden Hall residents that did not move out early, were reassigned to Gil-bert Hall in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, giving students their own private bathroom instead of sharing a community bathroom.
• Ms. Angela Ward developed a new Express Check Out process, to sup-port social distancing. This allowed students to check out without any contact with staff. This process will be implemented in the future at the end of the year checkout, utilizing addi-tional technology provided as part of our housing software system that gives students the opportunity to sign up and check out on their own.
• Eight (8) resident assistants chose to resign from the staff, due to the pan-demic. The remaining RAs on campus have been providing 24-hour on call coverage for the halls. The on call and duty process had to be adapted due to reduced staffing, so staff are now doing rounds in multiple buildings rather than just their own.
