Understand the Doer/Leader Distinction
Many employees simply cannot or will not step up into a position of
leadership, taking responsibility and ownership.
Trying to make a doer into a leader sets everyone up for failure
Hire for Potential and Actual
Many people need to grow into leadership effectiveness. But hire only
people who have successfully managed people and responsibility at some level.
Past is prelude
Hire for Character and Competence
Messed-up people can still do good work to some level. But they cannot lead effectively, or be trusted with
responsibility.
Inner quality beats charisma and talent at this level of leadership
Get Outside Advice
We are NOT objective about our own strengths and weaknesses, nor do we view our businesses with detachment.
Insight is often best gained from the outside
Embrace Structure
Any growing company needs structure. The org chart will evolve, but realize that you are now in the leadership acquisition/development business.
